You asked for it: XBMC for AppleTV2, iPad, iPhone4.

Posted By: Team XBMC on Jan 20, 2011 in Site News

The XBMC team is proud to present our first ARM-based release, and it’s a big one. Scott Davilla, with the help of Edgar (gimli) Hucek and Zeljko (amet) Ametovic and several other developers and testers, is finally ready to pull the curtain off of his fun little secret.

You know that $99 tiny form-factor powerhouse that would be just perfect if it could only run XBMC? Now it can.
Or how about that iPad that is just begging to be used as a real portable media center? Now it can.
And while we’re at it, put your iPhone4 to work using XBMC as well. Why? Because we can.

These are not initial ports, and they are not early development snapshots. Here they are: full XBMC installs and source code, ready for consumption.

AppleTV2

This thing may fit in your pocket, but don’t underestimate its power. Unfortunately, it is seriously lacking in capability due to its limited feature-set revolving around rentals and iTunes. Where’s the fun in that?

  • Full XBMC install, this is not a remote or thin client streamer.
  • No longer is your AppleTV2 chained to iTunes.
  • Who wants transcoded video anyway?
  • Share files on your network your way.
  • Full hardware decode for 720p/1080p movies.
  • Everything else you know and love about XBMC.

iPad/iPhone4

What good is a tablet that makes you play by its rules? We at XBMC want our media our way.

  • You guessed it, this is full-blown XBMC. Not a remote.
  • Launch XBMC like any other app.
  • Drag and drop media from your computer, or share it on your home-network
  • Also fully hardware accelerated for most formats.
  • Works on iPhone4, though it’s currently frustrating to use.
  • Challenge: Who will be the first to create a gesture-driven skin?

Availability

As you might have guessed, you won’t be seeing XBMC in the app-store any time soon, since it directly competes with apple products. XBMC will only be installable for those of you with jailbroken devices. If that’s you, head to the wiki for instructions for the atv2 or ipad/iphone.

  • NineT9 Jan 20, 2011

    omfg… I’ve been waiting for the ultimate XBMC device for years, and this is it :)

  • ubuntuf4n Jan 20, 2011

    Excellent, you guys rock!

  • XIYL Jan 20, 2011

    Nice. Sure makes that Apple puck mighty tempting. Was not expecting this but way to go.

  • Arran Jan 20, 2011

    Thank you!! You just put a huge smile on my face. No more need for my full PC below the TV.

  • Bahndit Jan 20, 2011

    Bravo, gents! Bravo!

  • bass63 Jan 20, 2011

    Wow! Seems like I’m the first one to discover that great news. But why doesn’t anyone said anything about performance? Can XVMC on ATV2 play full-blown 1080p MKVs with no dropped frames??? That’s a miracle!

  • Jane Doe Jan 20, 2011

    Now PS3 please

  • Marcelo Jan 20, 2011

    Cool Cool!!!

  • JP Jan 20, 2011

    Amazing! I was happy enough with Dharma/broadcom card, this is monumental! If Davilla ran for president, I would vote for him. XBMC on my iPad… Amazing!

  • Marcelo Jan 20, 2011

    is it possible mount external disks on Apple Tv 2?

  • ChangeOfTrousersRequired Jan 20, 2011

    I dunno what to say but, niiiiiiiiiice

  • bmaltais Jan 20, 2011

    This is amazing! Now if there was an un-tethered jailbreak for the ATV2!

  • bass63 Jan 20, 2011

    I just tried and installed it on my iPhone 3GS. IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM!!!!! It even sees my shares and plays files! Of course because of CPU limitations of an old iPhone i could only played standard definition Xvid AVIs, but they DID play fine! With subtitles and all… Still can’t believe it.
    Thank you, thank you, thank you! Got to get my hands on that new ATV2 now…

  • Marcos Jan 20, 2011

    Guys, you kick ass, simpler installer pls, i’m donating

  • NineT9 Jan 20, 2011

    @JP
    I 2nd voting Davilla for president

    He’s brought many smiles with his work on XBMC!

  • pbjr Jan 20, 2011

    Amazing work XBMC Team! Thank you so much!!

  • sdsnyr94 Jan 20, 2011

    I guess I won’t need to wait for a Sigma based unit….. ATV2 here I come!

  • OwlBoy Jan 20, 2011

    Who else made sure it was not April 1st when they read this even though they know it is January?

  • Brenton Jan 20, 2011

    If they allow VLC on the App Store why wouldn’t they allow XBMC?

    Or is there too many uses of non-api calls that Apple would get upset about?

  • G_A Jan 20, 2011

    W-O-W.

    Sure is a hell of a nice work. Any chance we will se this in android-powered devices on ARM such as the Galaxy Tab or the upcoming Notion Ink Adam?

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2011

    The ipad/iphone video says it is private and not viewable.

  • Nate Jan 20, 2011

    I installed this on my JB’d iPhone 4 and it only shows the XBMC splash screen then goes back to my home screen. Any ideas?

  • GrantD Jan 20, 2011

    While I generally don’t care about apple products as they tend to be expensive and not worth the hassle of eating out of steve job’s hands this looks mighty tempting. 100bucks puts in the range of every capable media streamer on the market with way more functionality. Also the case is small and understated. When this gets nice and tidy I’ll definitely pick one up…..unless someone comes out with something better for similar or less money…mmmmm

  • OwlBoy Jan 20, 2011

    Brenton :
    If they allow VLC on the App Store why wouldn’t they allow XBMC?

    They removed VLC for the same reasons they would remove XBMC I think, license conflict issues.

  • DaniT Jan 20, 2011

    Following the how-to for iPad XBMC installs but doesn’t run (4.2.1 with tethered jb) anyone with the same problem?

  • razu Jan 20, 2011

    nice but can you connect usb hard drives to this, its pointlesss if u have to a another pc on at the same time too stream all the time.

    p.s would love see a ps3 with xbmc, as u know the ps3 jailbreak scene just just become huge.

  • davilla Jan 20, 2011

    DaniT

    Opps

    ssh in

    mv /Applications/AppleTV.app/AppleTV_org /Applications/AppleTV.app/AppleTV

    then reinstall

  • jubo Jan 20, 2011

    @DaniT
    I’m running 4.1 jailbroken. Installs OK on mine, but I click the app and it immediately closes. Any ideas?

  • Nate Jan 20, 2011

    @DaniT
    I have the same issue on iPhone 4 on 4.2.1. I tried to do davilla’s fix there, but AppleTV.app isn’t on my iPhone (of course :) )

  • SmSpillaz Jan 20, 2011

    Congradulations! I’m sure it must have been an absolute nightmare getting everything ported over to OpenGL ES and your assembler decoders working on ARM. Top work team! Top. work!

  • xbmc_lover Jan 20, 2011

    sweet! next step, boxee box :-)

  • Joe Jan 20, 2011

    Great work indeed!!! XBMC has been the most useful app I’ve used for well over 5 years!!! Great going guys!!!!

    But…

    @DaniT

    Same here, just jumps back to homescreen. :(

    Tried reinstalling, still no luck. :(

    (iPad 64GB 3G running 3.2.2 Jailbroken)

  • Austin Jan 20, 2011

    OMG AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! XBMC + iPAD= MANKIND’S 2 GREATEST INVENTIONS!!!!!!!!!!
    DAVILLA FOR PRESIDENT 2012!!!!!!!!!

  • leberwurstsaft Jan 20, 2011

    All is well, except for: there’s no audio?! Anyone else with audio? Or better yet, someone hearing their movies on the iPad?

  • superdry Jan 20, 2011

    Color me interested…but,

    How well will the ATV2 decode high-profile 1080p h.264 files or files that are encoded to non-blu-ray spec? I’ll wait for the next revision and see where this goes. Awesome news, though.

  • RyanG Jan 20, 2011

    Excellent work!

    I’m guessing the output from the ATV2 is still limited to 720p? Would’ve been the greatest device on earth if it could do 1080p + XBMC.

    Note to future Sigma options: Please make it output in 1080p!!!

  • Richard Ayotte Jan 20, 2011

    Man that’s bitter sweet. I love that you can run XBMC on some cheap hardware but I wish that I would have known about this development before buying the Boxee Box! Well, I might just sell it and get an ATV2 instead. Anyone know if there’s any reason that I should keep the Boxee Box? I only bought it to install XBMC on it and that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

  • ryan Jan 20, 2011

    How is the ATV2 handling larger, say 14GB 1080p .mkv’s? If it plays those well it should play anything well and this is huge.

  • The Smile Man Jan 20, 2011

    Have you tried submitting to the App store?

  • Brenton Jan 20, 2011

    VLC was removed because one of the founders of the project claimed that it violated the GPL. Code and functionally wise Apple had no problem with it.

  • Bas Jan 20, 2011

    So if I install this, do I lose the ATV2 features of netflix and air play – gaining just what XBMC offers?

  • Garbageologist Jan 20, 2011

    So now that this is finished, maybe they will finally implement PVR functionality?

  • Mike Jan 20, 2011

    Doesn’t work on iPad with 4.2.1 with Redsnow Tethered JB :(

  • Brenton Jan 20, 2011

    Also – “Full hardware decode for 720p/1080p movies.” Do you need the Broadcomm Chip for this still?

  • theuni Jan 20, 2011

    Everyone with install problems: Hang tight. Looks like a last-minute change borked the repo. We should have it resolved quickly.

  • Mateus Jan 20, 2011

    Congratulations XBMC!!!

  • Joe Jan 20, 2011

    Wow!! Worked first time on iPhone 4, but the screen is a bit too slow for navigating around.

    Can’t test any videos/photos/music though coz the network doesn’t seem to work, can’t add sources, keeps saying “error 2: share not available”. What could that mean?

  • Jay Jan 20, 2011

    Excellent Excellent work! My Apple TV v2 has been sleeping all day except a few occasional netflix sessions. Now I can actually start using it for real. thanks a ton :)

  • tokyotapes Jan 20, 2011

    Wow, Apple should thank you guys because now I am buying an AppleTV tomorrow!

  • ITGUY Jan 20, 2011

    Great news! I can’t wait to install it on my iPad and Apple TV.

    Apple isn’t as bad with “competing” apps nowadays. Could you please confirm if you did submit it to the App Store and received an official rejection?

    Congrats!!

  • Brian Jan 20, 2011

    You guys are amazing!!

  • Tom Jan 20, 2011

    Very nice! Any hope of Airplay support? I’ve seen some demos of this running on Linux XBMC installs. This is the one feature of the stock aTV2 I’ve actually like to preserve…

  • Austin Serio Jan 20, 2011

    @RyanG

    Do you know how to read? Like really? Jeazus christ….

  • tacroy Jan 20, 2011

    Hmmm. Installed and it tries to open, goes to black and instantly crashes. iPad 3.2.2 Jailbroken.

  • Nick Jan 20, 2011

    Just tried it on 3.2 iPad and it just crashes after launch :(

  • scyber Jan 20, 2011

    So a potentially stupid question: The announcement says 1080p hardware decoding. Does that mean 1080p output to the TV, or that 1080p movies are decoded, but downconverted to 720p for output?

  • haruhiko Jan 20, 2011

    Can’t wait to jailbreak my ATV 2! But wait… I gotta find a USB to mini-USB cable first..

    @Brenton
    XBMC is mainly for Apple TV I guess. And the Apple TV 2 hasn’t got any App Store yet.
    for the iPad/iPhone version… I’m not sure. Is it something related to licensing issues just like VLC? the VLC developer that works at Nokia demanded the removal of the app because of this.

  • thescragster Jan 20, 2011

    Awesome work guys!

    A full tutorial on how to install is available here: http://appletvblogr.com/2011/01/how-to-install-xbmc-for-apple-tv-2g-tutorial/

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2011

    Out of curiosity will this improve support for other (pc) touchscreen interfaces

  • rickrude Jan 20, 2011

    This has made my day! this is huge – off i go to buy an appletv :D was waiting for xbmc on ps3 but this is better.

  • maximus808 Jan 20, 2011

    Sorry for asking such an extreme noob questions but I did some google research of xbmc and what can it do in a nutshell? Can I stream movies and music stored on my mac within the same network? If so, this is great as I won’t have to hook up my external hard drive to my PS3 to watch movies. However, there is still no untethered jailbreak for the Apple TV 2. But great job guys at the XBMC! It’s software like this that is finally making the Apple TV 2 the device it can be.

  • TracerX Jan 20, 2011

    Can we and, if so, where should we drop advancedsettings.xml for the ATV2?

  • ChrisKalania Jan 20, 2011

    Crashes after Logo in iPhone 4 on 4.1 …

  • Dan Jan 20, 2011

    Fantastic! Been a big fan of xbmc for a while now and it just keeps getting better. Will definitely be adding an ipad and atv2 to my wishlist :)

  • Josh Jan 20, 2011

    @ITGUY
    yah like apple is really going to let you ssh into your ipod and the apple tv doesn’t have apps yet.

  • theuni Jan 20, 2011

    @all: The install problem is fixed, new problem causing crashes on ipad/iphone is due to bad dependencies. This didn’t happen for testers because they already had the lib installed. Hang tight, we’re repackaging.

  • Tim Jan 20, 2011

    @theuni

    Thanks mate. Any chance you can tell us what lib needs to be installed in the meantime?? Cheers on the speedy resolution too.

  • ChillyCat Jan 20, 2011

    @ITGUY
    WHAT??? You serious…or drunk ??

    It can only be used AFTER it’s jailbroken….DOH

  • ChillyCat Jan 20, 2011

    ITGUY :Great news! I can’t wait to install it on my iPad and Apple TV.

    You freakin goof

  • davilla Jan 20, 2011

    Needs to be 4.x iOS. Sorry but I can’t seem to specify iOS version in Cydia.

    Anyone who is having launch issues under iOS, a) apt-get install curl or b) reinstall xbmc again. There was a packaging depends issue that has been solved.

  • Joe Jan 20, 2011

    Great going!! So impressed you guys are working on this so quickly!!

    Any chance there will be a guide on how to set up networking (can’t add sources on iPhone 4 eventhough no problems with news feed, weather and add-on downloading).

  • TracerX Jan 21, 2011

    @Joe
    Browsing doesn’t seem to work for me but I manually edited sources.xml with an smb share and it worked fine. This was ATV2 though, not iPhone 4.

  • TracerX Jan 21, 2011

    BTW, if anyone else is wondering about advancedsettings.xml, mysql setup seems to work if you put advancedsettings.xml in /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata . Amazing work XBMC team!

  • Liberty For ALL! Jan 21, 2011

    This is great news! Now all we need is AirPlay support on Mac & iOS XBMC, a Mac 64-bit version — then that will be amazing!

    Also, FYI, Monoprice has dirt cheap USB to Micro USB cables…

  • Liberty For ALL! Jan 21, 2011

    Yes, I would like some clarification on that point as well! ;-)

    @scyber

  • mnvader Jan 21, 2011

    I guess it’s finally time to upgrade my AppleTV1

  • John Jan 21, 2011

    Good job!!!

    Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!!!

  • Anonymous Jan 21, 2011

    the tutorial is linked on this very page already http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Install_XBMC_on_ATV2

  • RyanG Jan 21, 2011

    @Austin Serio
    Haha.. Yes, sir, I can read. Are you aware of the physical hardware limitations of the ATV2? Because it’s limited to a 720p output mode…. I think you’ll find that they are downscaling the 1080p to 720p.

    They merely announced they are DECODING 1080p video. But thanks for taking the time to reply.

    If davilla, or a someone who has it running, could reply back. I’d be mighty impressed if they managed to tweak the hardware and change the output mode to 1080p.

    Forgot to ask, how does the ATV2 perform though? Smooth? Might be heading out to buy one later. :) Depending on how it runs.

  • minibeardeath Jan 21, 2011

    @Richard Ayotte
    I would definitely sell the Boxee Box* because the ATV2 is half the price, and thATV is ARM based while the Boxee box is Atom based so the ATV will use far less power.
    *If its important, you shold double check that this port lets you actually output at 1080p resolution because the stock ATV2 only does 720p

  • davilla Jan 21, 2011

    @RyanG

    “They merely announced they are DECODING 1080p video”, sorry but I have to laugh, merely, like it’s trivial to do on a 1GHz armv7 in 256MBs of RAM. Yes we decode 1080p and use the hw scaler to scale to 720p. Getting the ATV2 is display 1080p is not high on the priority list right now.

  • slimshotty Jan 21, 2011

    I got it working on my iPad 4.2.1. It’s working really well so far. The jDownloader plugin works very good! The gmail checker plugin works. This is absolutely amazing!! Great work to the xbmc team!

  • az060693 Jan 21, 2011

    What filetypes does this support? 1080p h.264 mkv encodes with DTS audio?

  • Brad Jan 21, 2011

    I would love to see the Wii get a version of XBMC next. It might not be very powerful, but it really has become the center of my media room here recently. The current media center for the Wii works nicely but is really lacking in comparison.

  • waldo22 Jan 21, 2011

    @davilla
    @davilla,

    I don’t think that’s what he meant re: “merely”. RyanG was catching s&$t from people for asking if it actually displays in 1080p, or ‘just’ decodes and downscales. But I don’t thing he meant to imply that that isn’t an achievement… Just curiosity, really.

    Thanks for doing this. Fantastic.

    Does adding sources for videos etc work too on the iPad version? Still can’t figure out how to get it to work on iPhone4. :(

  • mados123 Jan 21, 2011

    Awesome job guys! Do plug-ins such as Pandora and skins also work with the AppleTV release of XBMC?

  • topfs2 Jan 21, 2011

    @G_A
    I have been looking at it and yes it might happen. Problem with android is that there is no really interesting set-top-box hardware readily available. Especially none which developers have access to. Donations are always welcomed though.

  • Waldi Jan 21, 2011

    hey folks, is it possible to use the online gaming system OnLive on Apple TV 2?

  • CeeK Jan 21, 2011

    Will this work on the touch 4g?

  • usr3263827 Jan 21, 2011

    To the development team- not long ago, I fell in love with XBMC the first time I loaded it on my PC as a test replacement for some codec packs and I haven’t looked back. This is a beautiful product. Many folks here appreciate your dedication and hard work, I hope you know that. Some here complain and will never be happy and will always want for more but that’s just noise. You are appreciated and respected. Thank you for your time and hard work!

  • Stefon Jan 21, 2011

    Used the tutorial posted earlier and it worked great!! http://appletvblogr.com/2011/01/how-to-install-xbmc-for-apple-tv-2g-tutorial/
    Finally!! I Love XBMC!!

  • pletopia Jan 21, 2011

    apt-get install libcurl wut?

    Hey I just loaded the Cydia REPO and its empty.. are the developers repakaging it or something still?? Im on Ipad 4.2.1.

  • Evan Jan 21, 2011

    Anyone know what the wireless situation is with this? I’d like to pick up 3 of them to replace the various Revo machines I have around the house.

  • Patrik Jan 21, 2011

    WOW! Full hardware video decoding of 1080p movies!

    How did you manage that when not even does Apple it?

  • Brulsmurf Jan 21, 2011

    @topfs2
    I think there were about six million new tablets reveiled at CES two weeks ago, many of them running Android … How’s that for interesting hardware? ;-)

  • a Jan 21, 2011
  • Gaius Omnibus Jan 21, 2011

    Would love to see IPad version in appstore.
    Why not simply send to Apple see if they accept or not.
    If noone of you complains to Apple like that VLC guy there shouldnt be any problem.

    Greetings
    Omni

  • Andy Jan 21, 2011

    So… when is the Android version coming?

    I can understand iOS being priority because of the atv but now I want this on my Android tablet :) Imagine custom ROMs built with XBMC as the default UI/launcher!

  • Nayuna Jan 21, 2011

    Congratulations, great work !

  • Tom Andersson Jan 21, 2011

    Thanks alot, have been waiting for this ;D

  • RyanG Jan 21, 2011

    @davilla

    What waldo22 said. I in no way meant to devalue the work you’ve done. The fact that 1080p is being processed at all is a tremendous effort, and clearly better than what Apple could do with their own hardware. Bravo! And thanks for the clarification.

  • Amit Gupta Jan 21, 2011

    You have granted my wish. Great job, keep up the good work.

  • Excellent Apps Jan 21, 2011

    wooow.. I have my Iphone dock next to my tv… I will try

  • icebox Jan 21, 2011

    Are there plans to support other devices? For example the Nokia n900 is a powerful arm phone running an open linux distribution (hence no need for jailbreaking).

    thanks

  • Jona§ Jan 21, 2011

    AAaaaaaaaaaamaaaaazing!!! Thank you all!

  • Patrik Jan 21, 2011

    Will the source code from this port be merged into XBMC’s mainline trunk?

    I would imagine that other ARM platforms would benifit from this code as well?

    Patrik :
    WOW! Full hardware video decoding of 1080p movies!
    How did you manage that when not even does Apple it?

    Are you using an existing hardware acceleration API or?

    Arw you considering a port of XBMC to another ARM device, such as the Nokia N900?

  • Ben Jan 21, 2011

    does 1080p processed mean, displayed or just decoded? Is it still limited to display 720p?

    cheers

  • Ben Jan 21, 2011

    @Ben
    *g* never mind .. should have read all comments first :-D

  • Ömer A Jan 21, 2011

    I just wanted to let you know that you made my day. Not because you made XBMC available for iOS devices, though this why I’m here. No you made my day because of this:
    “And while we’re at it, put your iPhone4 to work using XBMC as well. Why? Because we can.”

    Thank you! You are awesome developers and while being so great you also don’t loose your funny side!

  • nEUTRon Jan 21, 2011

    XBMC for Android Phones, anytime soon ?

  • Klaas Jan 21, 2011

    Guys, you ROCK! That’s probably the very first time i’m SERIOUSLY considering buying Apple Hardware! 100 Bucks for a full blown media center client without steel-ties to iTunes? That’s a dream! Great work!!

  • xequtor Jan 21, 2011

    Did someone compare the performance ATV2 with Mac Mini C2D 2Ghz running XBMC?

  • sean Jan 21, 2011

    @Joe
    I cant add my NAS as a source, I type \\10.0.1.1\ShareName\Movies and it automatically changes to //10.0.1.1/ShareName/Movies. What gives? Why the symbol change

  • FoGBaV Jan 21, 2011

    Android ! Please … a Android Version would be awesome !

  • Eloy Durán Jan 21, 2011

    First of all, very awesome work guys!

    Second, what a lousy responses to @ITGUY’s, imo, valid question. I’d like to know this too, because I don’t think the statement ‘since it directly competes with apple products’ has to necessarily be a reason for Apple to reject it. Isn’t the real ‘obstacle’, in this case, that code is GPL licensed and thus not compatible with the app store agreement?

    In any case, I’d love to see this in the official store, but that has nothing to do with the fact that it’s a very impressive achievement :)

  • sidysm Jan 21, 2011

    DAMN! I never saw this coming, kinda pissed in a way, just bought an android phone phone and was so happy but now….serious buyers remorse.

    Will this output 5.1 from apple tv, apologies if this is stupid question but never been interested in one til now

  • Shish Jan 21, 2011

    $99 is an amazing price, £62 in UK money, so I go to apple’s UK shop to buy… and they’re selling it for £101 ($160). What the hell, apple? £99 I’d think “ok, so they’re ripping us off just as much as every other tech company”, but £101 seems like they don’t just want to rip their customers off, they also personally hate them :-(

    Still, even if it just knocked itself out of the impulse-buy zone, I’d consider getting one if it could replace the other functions of my current home server while also using much less power…

  • Karsten Jan 21, 2011

    Thank you… Live i Denmark and dont have the possibillety to buy the atv2.. But because of this release i just ordrede 3 i UK… Hope Apple dosnt f*** it up whit an update.. Have 2 “old” atv with XBMC and a iPod toutch with the remote.. Works great.

  • paginilla Jan 21, 2011

    YOU ROCK PEOPLE. The best from the best. I love you guys. Keep working like you do.

    Amazing

  • Andrew Jones Jan 21, 2011

  • Northfield Jan 21, 2011

    This is BIG news! Thanks guys!

    They say it works on atv 2g that runs a jailbroken 4.1 fw… That means the first iOS that came with the atv and that it is untethered after a jailbreak! I can´t confirm this yet thou, my atv 2g 4.1 is at my apartment :( !

  • Kimmo Jan 21, 2011

    How about hd-audio?

  • grywnn Jan 21, 2011

    Wow.
    This has totally made my day.
    Finally a reason to jailbreak my iPad – can’t wait to get home and try it.

  • RXP Jan 21, 2011

    Can the AppleTV 2 really do 1080p MKV’s? If so I’ll buy one now!

    They’re £89 on Amazon right now

  • Confucious Jan 21, 2011

    The other source shown on the Wiki for the iPhone is really, really not nice. :(

    same with price in Germany 119 EUR, i’m thinking about replacing my Mac Mini C2D and getting ATV2 and selling Mac Mini, ATV2 has audio over HDMI Mac Mini not.

  • xequtor Jan 21, 2011

    I may go on lunch to Apple Store and get one

  • Elbert Jan 21, 2011

    £99 became £101 due to the recent VAT increase.

    Davilla, yours is a massive success. But I suggest that the 720p output gets more visibility in the announcement. Otherwise I’m sure lots of people will buy it for XBMC and later bitch about not being able to do 1080p output.

    Jailbreaking has currently a different legal status compared to PS3 hacking. Also, the developers have always stated that they feel themselves free to do what they want with their time. Davilla chose ATV2. Simple.

  • a Fan!!!!! Jan 21, 2011

    You guys are my heroes of the Year!!!!!

    I’ve bought Apple TV 2 and were fairly disappointed. I’ve searched the whole Internet to stream my Videos to Apple TV 2 and came to the conclusion to buy an Apple TV 1 to install XMBC or to hope for AirPlay and convert all my Movies.
    I’m watching 10 Apple TV 1 auctions but now – I’m happy like a schnitzel !!!!111 No other Apple TVs, no more pain with encoding.

    You guys are amazing!!!!

  • Nol Jan 21, 2011

    This is insane. Great work!

  • Fsne Jan 21, 2011

    Finally I can replace my original Xbox XBMC! Just one questions:

    Will the Apple TV 2 XBMC be able to play content from a extrenal USB hard drive?

  • kdv Jan 21, 2011

    What about AC3 & DTS passthrough?
    the original ATV firmware does not allow DTS passthrough,
    would that be enabled using XBMC?

  • mark Jan 21, 2011

    OMG Thank you thank you and good bye air video

  • Shish Jan 21, 2011

    Sure, the support is based on hardware and OS capabilities. But when there is only a single device in a category (eg, “phone running iOS”), then it makes more sense to call the device by name :P

  • Van Angelus Jan 21, 2011

    is it now possible to stream 1080p on apple tv2 ??? or only 720p like apple wants it to be :) ?

  • fikhl Jan 21, 2011

    That’s great! Now all I need is XBMC on my WDTV Live.

    Please! I know you guys can do it! Keep up the good work.

  • Harmsen Jan 21, 2011

    @Shish

    You can buy it @ amazon.co.uk for £79,90. It is always a better price than £99 ;)

  • Stelph Jan 21, 2011

    Awesome achievement, as well as allowing more formats of video to be played on the AppleTV (rather than just the ones specifed by Apple) this also means you can stream video’s directly from a NAS and not have to leave your PC on to enjoy!

    Ill look to have a go at installing this over the weekend, although one question I have is when installed on an iPhone/iPad, does airplay work? If so that would be awesome because I can see the best/most user friendly setup being:

    Media stored on NAS -> XBMC on iPad (with gestures) -> Airplay -> Playback on AppleTV

  • RXP Jan 21, 2011

    I was about to do that. Amazing achievement and hopefully Apple or someone else releases something else that can output to 1080p too.

  • Van Angelus Jan 21, 2011

    delete my last question ;) =

    but an other question. i didn’t buy apple tv because ONLY 720p sucks.

    now u guys say it´s possible to watch in 1080p. does it work perfect? what about the buffering. could u tell a little bit about it?

    2. question
    is it now possible to use the usb port with an external harddisk? xbmc should be able to do that now or am i wrong? somebody tried it?

  • Patrick Jan 21, 2011

    You probably shouldn’t have the installous repo shown on your wiki… just sayin’

  • ReflexReaction Jan 21, 2011

    Ok this is some fantastic news. So here are some questions I have:

    1. Will XBMC read the files drag / dropped onto an iPhone when in mass storage mode? Aka completely avoiding the need to use iTunes?

    2. Is the iPhone4 powerful enough to output the video in 1080p (or 720p) via apple connector dock -> HDMI cable?

    3. Is all HD content (x264,H.264, etc) hardware decoded, and smooth?

    4. If hardware accelleration is enabled, what is the impact on battery by watching a 8gig x264 MKV file? Should it be similar to watching a native iPhone video?

    5. Is there any plans for a PS3 port?

    6. No 6th question, but a massive thanks to the XBMC team for once again kicking ass!

  • Juri Jan 21, 2011

  • Dan Jan 21, 2011

  • waldo22 Jan 21, 2011

    @Patrik
    Using Apple’s undocumented and private VideoToolBox API to decode 1080p video.

  • maltloaf Jan 21, 2011

    It’s $99 + tax in the USA so not such a big difference to the UK price after all. You can get atv2 for £90 delivered from Amazon

  • simplyseb Jan 21, 2011

    Congratulations, Great work !

    I waiting that for buy an appleTV!

    You are the best ;)

  • azido Jan 21, 2011

    Now go ahead and write XBMC for Android-Based smartphones ;)

  • CrashX Jan 21, 2011

    @theuni:

    Please update topic to say that XBMC on Apple TV will decode 1080p content but will still output at 720P. We don’t people buying Apple TV hoping that it will do 1080P XBMC output and coming back here complaining that it doesn’t.

  • Lee B Jan 21, 2011

    I appreciate its full 1080p hardware decode, but is the playback 1080p or downscaled to 720p?

  • Stelios Arianoutsos Jan 21, 2011

    My friends. I’m a huge fan since XBMP. Actually XBMP wat the reason I got my XBOX…

    After all those years…. After all those versions…. After all those dreams…. It brings tears in my eyes…. Seriously…. After today…. XBMC will rule the world :)

    Well Done Team! All of your fans are DEEPLY proud of you…. Proud for believe in your work….

    Thank you.

  • superman Jan 21, 2011

    Please make this available in app-store! I’ll certainly not jailbreak my device.

  • amzz Jan 21, 2011

  • Lloyd Jan 21, 2011

    omfg this is amazing! Well done! If there was ever a time to jailbreak, it’s now!

  • DeePo Jan 21, 2011

    @Patrik That doesn’t mean you can watch videos at 1080p, it means you can watch 1080p at 720p without having to re-encode the clip first

  • DaniT Jan 21, 2011

    Finally! Installed XBMC on the iPad. Working great, menu transitions a bit rough. Probably getting an ATV2 tomorrow, the tiniest XBMC box!
    One question though, does anyone know if you can add storage to the ATV2 via it’s usb port?

  • FullofApple Jan 21, 2011

    Congratultions to the team. The XBMC team was always an example for great software engineering … but this outstanding. Thank you !!!

  • joedeal Jan 21, 2011

    …now if only I could jailbreak my ipad on ios 4.2 with my windows PC….

  • Jon Jan 21, 2011

    Amazing work..streaming 1080p mkvs over the wifi to my ipad and it’s playing great. How do we put files directly on the ipad for it to play?

  • iRoNBiLL Jan 21, 2011

    WOW!! You guys just made a ton of people happy!! You make me want to buy an iPad now… you guys must sell tons of hardware just for running XBMC on it…kudos to the devs who made this possible!!

  • Stan Jan 21, 2011

    So… it requires iOS 4.1+? Trying to install on 4.0 and Cydia isn’t happy

  • BobF Jan 21, 2011

    Excuse me if this has been answered already, but has this app been submitted to the AppStore? VLC was approved by Apple (only removed by request of the developer, not Apple), so I don’t see any reason why this would not be as well.

  • David Jan 21, 2011

    How is this with different skins, e.g. night as i love this skin and would not want to lose it. Also would i have to re-encode any of my files or will this play all mkv’s @720p easily. OK last question, where does it store the DB? If this works as well as an ION based machine then i will be getting an ATV2.

  • makaber Jan 21, 2011

    hopefully there is an pvrtest2 version for connect to vdr (vnsi) coming up?

  • Brice Jan 21, 2011

    Dude, awesome!

    I agree it would be cool, to have a custom a proper touch driven skin for the iphone 4 (maybe for the iPad too)
    Anyway it’s great :)

  • topfs2 Jan 21, 2011

    @Brulsmurf
    I said set-top-box hardware for a reason ;) At any rate, I have looked at it and it most likely will need gingerbread based tablets. Personally, if there is no set-top-box hardware its not interesting. But thats real subjective and just a motivation for me to dev. I know many will use tablets for this :)

  • Stefan Balazsi Jan 21, 2011

    Fantastic news! Finally i can start useing my AppleTV!

    Thanks again!

  • Josh G. Jan 21, 2011

    This is a great achievement. Getting XBMC running on low-cost embedded hardware is something people have been asking about for a long time, and it’s awesome to see some concrete steps in that direction.

    That said… Engadget’s review claims “occasional choppiness” on 1080p content. Is that true? If so, does that happen on content taken from Blu-Ray discs, or only stuff that has been re-encoded with a higher level H.264 profile like L5.1? I realize that this is most likely a hardware shortcoming and not something XBMC can do anything about, but it’d be nice to know.

    Great work all around – can’t wait to see what’s next?

  • Andreas Schipplock Jan 21, 2011

    the only problem is that the jailbreak for atv2 via PwnageTool doesn’t work anymore as apples itunes makes a validation upon restoring the modified atv firmware and fails to do so because apple simply sucks :/.

    The software here might be great but for now it’s completely useless for others that haven’t jailbroken their atv2 3 or 4 months ago.

  • Ruud Jan 21, 2011

    Will the AppleTV version work with the shared database trick ? (Mysql database and added code to the advancedsettings.xml)

  • Mo Jan 21, 2011

    @Shish
    The US Price does not include any sales tax, however the UK price must legally include VAT at 20%. So not quite the rip off you’re suggesting

  • neil Jan 21, 2011

    I cannot wait to get home!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO this is what i’ve been waiting for!

  • usr3263827 Jan 21, 2011

    Considering the incredible value XBMC has just provided to the ATV2, my intention would be to pair an ATV2 with a NAS device. I am respectfully requesting this user community’s comments and opinions as to which NAS product you use or which one to avoid, which offers the best value. Are there compatibility considerations, etc. Any additional technical comments about your setup would be most welcomed. Thank you in advance for your responses.

  • Eric Jan 21, 2011

    @RyanG, sorry mate but there’s a difference between “clearly better than Apple could do” with “clearly better than Apple chose to release. I think XBMC and jailbreaking is great but to ridicule Apple engineers is off base. Apple works to a different set of restraints and a different audience than the jailbreak audience. Let’s be glad we have both.

  • razu Jan 21, 2011

    can someone tell me if i can use usb hard drives or not.

  • superdry Jan 21, 2011

    @waldo22
    The undocumented API is interesting. I wondering if the xbmc developers can use that api in the next version of xbmc for mac. I only mention this because people who have Macbook Pros with a Nivida 8600 series (like me) is left in the dark for video acceleration even though the 8600 can accelerate h264 video.

  • robi Jan 21, 2011

    Hallo,
    i have a JB iPad with the aTV Flash (Black) and in the “Manage Extras” are XBMC vers. 10.0-0 for install possible.
    Is this the correct version? Is this the same XBMC where we here talking about?
    Thanks
    Robi

  • Gkpm Jan 21, 2011

    @Shish
    Apple does say that the UK price includes approximately £23 VAT+duty+levies, so it’s not really their fault.

  • leberwurstsaft Jan 21, 2011

    XBMC on the iPad mutes the sound when the “mute switch” is set to ‘mute’. Even though I have an extension installed, that re-enabled the orientation lock for this switch. Could it be, that XBMC checks for the physical position of this switch, instead of relying on the API? This will probably be even more important, once iOS 4.3 brings back the rotation lock itself, along with an option to use the switch as either “mute” or “lock”.

  • Rupert Jan 21, 2011

    You guys have always rocked, but the last few months you’ve really stepped up the level of awesomeness…. just stopped by to say that.

  • Marcos Jan 21, 2011

    Can somebody do a nice clear post on what the possible sources are for Media?

    You can do SMB? Mac file share? And what about a direct USB input? And if so, can you get a little hub and have a couple of drives hooked up?

    Thanks

  • robi Jan 21, 2011

    One more question!
    How can i change from F° to C° in the Weather ??
    Any idea?

  • excer Jan 21, 2011

    Way to go guys, thanks a bunch for this app!

  • J0539h Jan 21, 2011

    OMG, OMG, OMG.

    I was not expecting this, I am so excited! Amazing.
    No more outdated original xbox or $400 Acer Revo, now I can run this on my Apple Tv2.
    That box was doing nothing but waiting for the rare times I wanted to stream from my iPhone, now it’s time for my ATV2 to get busy.
    (OK, I’m still gonna use that Acer Revo, but …)

  • ME Jan 21, 2011

    @robi Change the country in Settings. This determines F° or C°

  • akabob Jan 21, 2011

    I heard atv2 video card was only supporting 1280×800.
    Even if it’s a not a priority, will it be one day able to do 1080P through HDMI or 720P is a hardware restriction ?

  • tacroy Jan 21, 2011

    Ah…so I need 4+ jail broken! Is the only current jailbreak for 4+ ipad’s the teathered mac only route? Thanks!

  • Numus Jan 21, 2011

    I think an Android port (should be simple from the linux branch build) would be benefical to people with HDMI output on their phone (like my HTC EVO). But, would first need to establish the ability to easily mount a SMB2 share via a VPN to stream.

  • Christoffer Jan 21, 2011

    Hi guys! Awesome work, a tear almost came down on my cheek! But stupid as I am, I did accedently remove the “Setting menu” from the main view. So now I can prectically do nothing at all. Do you guys know hos I can get it back? Ive tried to reinstall XBMC, but it keeps my settings. :-(

  • kizer Jan 21, 2011

  • Gyro Jan 21, 2011

    Not true… Apple was the one that removed it. The company that made the VLC port had full permission to do so and release it on the app store my the VLC team.

  • Fubar Jan 21, 2011

    Hey,

    awesome to have XBMC on Apple TV2!!!
    Just instaled it and works fine.

    But how do you add a path of your source file on your computer or NAS, etc…
    Cheers mates!

  • Bentendo Jan 21, 2011

    I think the app is amazing, however the text size is 100% not iPhone friendly, and is clearly only built for the iPad.

  • Manny Jan 21, 2011

    This is very impressive, but I would find it more useful and practical on the upcoming Atrix with it’s multimedia dock since the dock will allow me to install usb drives and unto a big screen tv. I really hope that Scott Davilla will port his amazing work on Tegra 2 Android phones.

  • topfs2 Jan 21, 2011

    Android is a framework over linux, so any code interacting with other normal libraries on linux needs to be rewritten to work against android, its not a small task.

  • Marcos Vinicius Pereira Jan 21, 2011

    I’m very curious about how the keyboard for search functions will work. Will it be like the Boxee keyboard (arrows to move around)?

  • cdlenfert Jan 21, 2011

    @leberwurstsaft
    Same problem for me. Tried rebooting, but still no audio.

  • Virtex Jan 21, 2011

  • Hube Jan 21, 2011

    AMAZING!! Now make the PS3 and WD TV Live versions!!!

    THX

  • trollwii Jan 21, 2011

    thanks, thanks, thanks, tranks. Gracias Gracias Gracias. The best. Increible. Thanks.

  • Scotland Jan 21, 2011

    Awesome work!! Hope this is a prelude to XBMC being bundled with set-top devices and TVs in the future (the Sigma deal should aid that too) and apps available on mobile devices (phones/tablets). Wider distribution of XBMC only means greater support (more and better add-ons).

    Would love to see further ports of XBMC to webOS (those upcoming webOS tablets are going to be perfect for this – though they don’t have much market share currently, HP/Palm doesn’t discourage jailbreaking/homebrew). Anyway, congrats – again, excellent work on the iOS port!!!

  • cyma Jan 21, 2011

I only mention this because people who have Macbook Pros with a Nivida 8600 series (like me) is left in the dark for video acceleration even though the 8600 can accelerate h264 video.

    I think it’s already been done… I got this info from a web interview with Davilla…

  • derek Jan 21, 2011

    you GUYS F***ing Rock! I am speechless :) I can see XBMC on a lot of devices, good for you, XMBC still the best, every TV should have XBMC installed, SONY, SAMSUNG, PANASONIC, JVC all TV makers, get these guys… HIRE THEM!

  • Bernardino Lopez Jan 21, 2011

    Hello and thanks for work. Only problem is i really like 1080p…

    Can you get this on ASUS O!play? I have it and its very cheap like Apple TV but supports 1080p for same price… maybe a better place to port to.

    I think there were about six million new tablets reveiled at CES two weeks ago, many of them running Android … How’s that for interesting hardware? ;-)

    Nobody’s got time to write software for 6 million different hardware configurations, half of which will be running on unique/custom versions of Android.

  • Marcelo Jan 21, 2011

    Go to settings and change your country

  • Ersan Jan 21, 2011

    Works absolutely brilliantly, decoded every video I threw at it with very little choppiness. The interface was pretty laggy, however, but usable. It does downscale everything to 720p which is the only thing stopping me from using it full time, but I have faith that there will be a hack to change the video resolution eventually (though there never was for the first appletv…)

  • First Gear Jan 21, 2011

    say…can an external hdd be hooked up to atv2?

  • Andreas Schipplock Jan 21, 2011

    @cyma, only tethered which means you have to re-jailbreak it everytime you power it off and on again. As I said the pwnage tool doesn’t work anymore. Itunes validates the loaded firmware file when restoring it so it’s useless for now.

  • Anthony Jan 21, 2011

    I will say this, in light of the recent announcement that the American Le Mans Series will be showing its Flag to Flag coverage of races online only as the older part of the fan base screaming foul. Its not just about making sure techies and geeks understand how to use this stuff but normal people, older people. They are not going to buy a smart phone likely and they aren’t going to add more equipment to their media rig without justification. Companies like yours should work more on educating the public about your products instead of always working to expand their reach because all they are reaching are more people like yourself.

  • kdv Jan 21, 2011

    Got it running on ATV 2G, unfortunately no multichannel output (no AC3 or DTS), although I can select the AC3/DTS tracks and the audio settings also indicate 5.1 output, but it is 2 channel pcm going in the receiver.
    Is this how it is supposed to be or a bug?

  • Ali Jan 21, 2011

    Happened to me also just exit again and then try again

    @Joe

  • wang Jan 21, 2011

    Don’t forget to make a version for the Boxee Box. That would totally make my year!

  • Marc Brooks Jan 21, 2011

    Q) It’ll decode 1080p, but still output in 720p, correct?
    Q) Can I attach a USB external DVD reader and play DVDs or CDs directly, like I can with my Windows-based XBMC device?
    Q) Can newly purchase current generation ATV2 still be jailbroken using Seas0nPass break?
    Q) Any compatible bluetooth/USB keyboard support?
    Q) ETA on Android remote control (given the web-server isn’t live yet)?

  • boingman Jan 21, 2011

    Well, I hope that an untethered JB for the iPad is released soon, since there’s now one more good reason to update.
    Thankfull, at least for the iPhone there’s 4.1 JB untethered.

  • ginozzo Jan 21, 2011

    Amazing! Tried on the Apple TV (jb 4.2.1) with some streaming content (generc flv, but even megavideo) and it work!
    Now give us the ability to input text using the Apple Remote app for iphone/ipad, writing a url with the built-in keyboard is a pain… for the rest, is pefect! Also plugins works very well!

  • Dan Jan 21, 2011

    Good: XBMC on Apple TV 2G, Hurray!!!

    BAD: AppleTV 2G 4.2.1 requires TETHERED boot!!! So you need to connect your MAC to it every time you boot it.

    Question: If the appleTV 2G goes to standby will it need to boot again? i.e: How often will i need to connect it to my MAC and do the tethered boot?

  • Cuba Foreign Investments Jan 21, 2011

    What the hell is going on here!!!! I love these guys!!! really, really really, i love this developers team! these guys rocks!!!! To infinity and beyond apple didn’t allow 1080p on aTV and xbmc can! this is the kind of marvelous that i love from open software and the lovers/supporters of the human nature! that’s why i’m and xbmc fan! (sayed while doing MJ’s moon-walk) Que Dios tenga en la gloria al XBMC forever and ever!

  • Bob dole Jan 21, 2011

    Saw this and was like “omg!” but then saw “iphone4″ and was like “wtf” THEN tried on my ipod touch 3g, and it worked!!!!1 holy crap! Im running ios 4.1 though. Music playback’s ok when only doing that, so no multitasking;-)

  • Mariano Jan 21, 2011

    I have to jailbreak my Ipad. I guess I was just waiting for this to happend….
    Thank you for this!!!

  • boingman Jan 21, 2011

    Is it normal that I can’t change the resolution in the iPhone version? It’s still at 480×320. I would like to change it to 960×640 on the iPhone 4 or is that not possible?

  • boingman Jan 21, 2011

    Okay, found the answer in the forum. Looks like the retina display of the iphone 4 isn’t supported yet.

  • hhhhh Jan 21, 2011

    needs to be changed to 4.1+ will not support 4.0.1

  • derek Jan 21, 2011

    Now just waiting on the Team to port to Boxee Box, that would be really sweet:) maybe PS3 or WD TV Live, they need more time

  • waldo22 Jan 21, 2011

    1) correct, 1080p decoding, only 720p output
    2) No external drives, HDD or DVD. I believe the ATV 2 USB operates in “device” mode or client mode only
    Don’t know about the rest.

  • thekingraptor Jan 22, 2011

    Just got done playing with this on the iPad. Very very cool! Im impressed that it can play 720p content, very unexpected. Im just blown away by this, very unexpected.

  • Michael Jan 22, 2011

    On hard drive support… You can hook up a hard drive to an iPad, but you need the camera kit that apple sells. I haven’t tested how well it works with xbmc. The only issue that I can see making it not work is that xbmc only gives access to the mobile home folder. The external hard drive mounts in var/mnt. Perhaps a symbolic link in the home folder may give yous access to the external drive.

  • CageX Jan 22, 2011

    Ok I have jailbroken my ATV2 but now two problems I came across is first all my database is around 1200 movie and it loaded by SMB but no pictures loaded from director like the old Xbox Xbmc did. And 2nd question is for testing I played 3 movies and I exit out of movie after few minutes but when loading 3 or 4th movie the XBMC crashes and goes back to old ugly ATV2 and it really upsets me any solutions?

  • Arnd Brugman Jan 22, 2011

    Advent Vega has HDMI..

  • yimmii Jan 22, 2011

    YEAA such a great news!!

    i love xbmc since my old xbox is gone because of SD TV.

    GREAT Job!!! i will try it today!

  • Guido Jan 22, 2011

    Can you use apple’s remote app to control/type within xbmc? Or with any other xbmc remote app?

  • ginozzo Jan 22, 2011

    @Dan
    I never rebooted. Sleep is different, you just need a reboot if you unplug from the power…

  • Phil Jan 22, 2011

    @Hube
    I can see WD live in the near future due to the new relationship with sigma however i do believe that PS3 will never been a possibility due to its closed-source nature. all the hardware is locked up, its like asking to install it on a tivo series 4 machine and last year sony disabled the abilly to install linux as a 2nd operating system.

  • LarryPaige Jan 22, 2011

    What about Android Tablets?

  • SteveBobs Jan 22, 2011

    I am a newbie to XBMC.. The visuals are beautiful, layout much more visually appealing than anything else out there but…. I do not find it to be user friendly.

  • The Digital Pimp Jan 22, 2011

    This is most excellent. Does anyone know if the XBMC version will be the same on the ATV1 & ATV2? I have both units, and I want to make sure the experience is similar for my family on both devices. Understand there are two different install procedures. My ATV1 already has XBMC.

  • Dan Jan 22, 2011

    @ginozzo
    Ok then, that is no problem. Mine is never unplugged from the power outlet :)

    Ill give it a try then. Amazing work!!! Too bad apple does not like other people to play with their platforms… oh well.

  • TomFromMunich Jan 22, 2011

    Great work guys! Jailbreak was a piece of cake and now watching “non-Apple-format” stuff like divx and xvid from my Mac via smb FileSharing 8-)

  • kyouhei Jan 22, 2011

    I just purchased an ATV2 and HDMI cable 2mins after reading this article!!

  • cory Jan 22, 2011

    Absolutely fantastic! Thanks so much for the AppleTV 2 XBMC. i watched an entire hd movie using it last night with no stutters. Apple needs to open an App Store for the ATV2 and you guys need to be the first app. This is the ultimate set-top box… now if only someone would write an app that connects to the ATV2 USB that can record live TV from ATSC or ClearQAM (via EyeTV Hybrid, and save the files back to an iTunes library), then the living room has been conquered. ;)

    Thanks again!

  • Luke Jan 22, 2011

    Great Work!!!! I have to say that a version to run on android phones would be fantastic have been trying to figure out how to port this through linux on my htc hd2 for a while now with no real progress. There are not 6 million new android tablets and not 3 million custom versions of android either.. Really hope to see this ported to android platform to help the millions and millions that don’t prefer apple products. Thanks again for all your hard and FANTASTIC work!!!

  • Martin Jan 22, 2011

    since there is no hard disk on apple tv 2 where the thumbnail and fanart of movie are store?

  • Anonymous Jan 22, 2011

    @Andreas Schipplock
    Check again, Sea0nPass works a treat. .. just did it 30mins ago on firmware 4.2.1 :) (yea its tethered but for now, just never turn it off, perfect).

  • steve Jan 22, 2011

    Hi, i have atv2 and zyxel nsa210 and when i want to play movie from nsa is vare bad, slow and seeking. does anybody have this problem? thanks

  • steve Jan 22, 2011

    ok, when i restart it and boot tethered its ok :)

  • Nitneroc69 Jan 22, 2011

    It doesn’t work for watching on TV with “Apple Composite AV Cable”

  • Craig Jan 22, 2011

    I added the the sorces but when i click on the XBMC-IOS it brings me to the details page and i click install it then brings me to the confirm page and says “Note: the requested modifications cannot be applied due to required dependencies or conflicts that cannot be automatically found or fixxed”

    it then has a cancel/queue botton in the upper left hand corner of the ipad screen..

    this is for the ipad jailbroken running ios 4

  • Adrian Jan 22, 2011

    A remote controll like this apps interface would be nice for iPhone..

  • Fmstrat Jan 22, 2011

    Maybe I’m crazy, but when you have a list of videos that is more than one page on the iPad, how do you page down?

  • Jeremy Jan 22, 2011

    Wow! I love the way XBMC is heading… I can convince more and more people that it’s the best out there. This is just one more reason why! Good work guys!

  • Brainiac Jan 23, 2011

    Awesome! After reading this immediately ordered the ATV2! But just realized, that it looks like I can only JB with a Mac…is that correct? Is there anyway to JB with a windows PC? Or Linux?

  • jd Jan 23, 2011

    @Guido
    Doesn’t look like the Remote app works just yet. I was able to tap to select but wasn’t able to navigate around by swiping the iPhone. There may be a way to get it working but at 2am this morning I wasn’t able to find it… will try a bit harder tomorrow.

    On a positive note, watching 720p .mkv files looked very impressive on the TV2 /w XBMC… I knew there was some reason I bought this thing… it certainly wasn’t for the Netflix.ca content.

  • Aboo Jan 23, 2011

    Fmstrat, put your finger on scroll strip to the right of a list and drag it down. BTW, right-click on list item is done with double finger tap.

    Tapping finger on the right side when you’re at the video list will allow you to change list view.

    Has anybody been able to open weather?

  • Guido Jan 23, 2011

    @Guido

    Found the answer :) webserver disabled atm do no yet!

  • Hb Jan 23, 2011

    Fmstrat :
    Maybe I’m crazy, but when you have a list of videos that is more than one page on the iPad, how do you page down?

    Same, no idea

  • Goofy Jan 23, 2011

    I install XBMC on the Ipad (FW 4.2.1.) and everything works fine.
    720P smooth 1080p buffering.

  • Moj Jan 23, 2011

    Apple should be thanking you. I got it working on my ATV2 streaming 1080p vids from my 9TB fileserver so i went and bought 3 more for the rest of the TVs in my house! I think you guys should approach apple and negotiate for a 70%-30% ATV2 split like they do with their app store minions!

  • Ty Jan 23, 2011

    So I currently have a 40GB ATV running XMBC 10 and I like it a lot (my wife, not so much). I received an ATV2 as a gift and was about to return it since it wouldn’t allow XMBC. Then I saw this announcement.

    I’m trying to decide if I should now keep the ATV2 and jailbreak it (hopefully with a non-tethered solution in the future). I’m trying to pinpont the benefits of going with the new ATV2.

    Here’s what I see:
    1) Possible improved XBMC GUI performance
    2) Improved support for HD video via XBMC
    3) Access to Nextflix via ATV2

    Are the above correct and are there others I should consider?

    Thanks all!

  • r3skyline Jan 23, 2011

    im so going out and buying an apple tv 2 now!!! THX XBMC!!!

  • Lou Jan 23, 2011

    @kyouhei
    Did the same thing myself!

    i might end up buying a bunch more if this thing really holds up.

    The XBMC team always does great work.

  • tetsuia Jan 23, 2011

    I love xbmc since was installed on my first xbox…I appreciate a lot last.fm and everything can do.
    I installed it on myjailbroken ATV2 and unfortunately I wasn’t able to find last.fm and I do not understand where I can put some plugin that I have for video or musi.
    please let me known something…
    tnx a lot from Italy!!

  • Jeff Jan 23, 2011

    Thanks for whoever posted this tutorial, worked like a charm! http://appletvblogr.com/2011/01/how-to-install-xbmc-for-apple-tv-2g-tutorial/

  • dih Jan 23, 2011

    @Phil
    oh, you have not been up to date on this issue. closed-source and locked-down is gone my friend. the ps3 is goatse-wide open.

  • MxPxFan Jan 23, 2011

    How do you get 5.1 audio to work over optical out? I tried the obvious settings in system settings. but its still putting out 2.0 sound to my receiver

  • Pico Jan 23, 2011

    does it work with apple time capsule – all the media is on the NAS so I dont need a pc/mac turned on to access it.
    Does it play MKV and ISO files?

  • Nugpot Jan 23, 2011

    Hmm nice, but I don’t think XMBC and IPad/IPhone/IAnnything gels at all. The one is an excellent free software package that proves free-ware can contend and be better than the commercial counterparts, where as “IAnything” is Nazism at its best, squeezing money from every pocket with every little small feature or forcing everyone to buy expensive adapters to do any basic thing.
    However, Android is starting to be the XMBC in operating systems, and yet, XMBC don’t have a client for it? Weird. XMBC should get one out there and it will be a great marriage!

  • Joe Jan 23, 2011

    So can a new AppleTV2 from an Apple store still be jailbroken (tethered or untethered)?

  • Limvot Jan 23, 2011

    Also works on my iTouch 3g, just played part of the matrix…
    Thanks!

  • Chris 77 Jan 23, 2011

    Actually, I find the iPad works well as a movie theater. Not to deny that the Nook has it’s uses, but most people I know use the iPad to watching movies. As for choice, it’s also important to remember that you’re not locked into one store with Apple. Indeed, I get most of the movies on my iPad through ifunia ipad converter. So when it comes to content, I actually prefer an iPad or an Android tablet that will give me multiple options for movie so that I have the widest selection of titles available

  • kolchr Jan 24, 2011

    make port for ps3 not for shitty APPLE -.-

  • pilehave Jan 24, 2011

    Would have been nice if it did 1080p @ 24 fps, but I guess that is what you get for $99 :)

  • sporadic Jan 24, 2011

    @Joe
    Yes, but currently only tethered and if you own a Mac (using Seas0nPass. I bought one yesterday from Best Buy with the intentions of loading XBMC and unfortunately it already had the 4.1.1 (ios 4.2.1) firmware on it.

  • Rambutan46 Jan 24, 2011

    where … is .. THAT DONATION BUTTON ??!!!???

  • Sandreas Jan 24, 2011

    Perhaps it should be mentioned, that the Apple TV 2 does natively not support 1080p support due hardware limitations. The HDMI output is phyically limited to 720p… Can anyone confirm this?

  • Tomatosoup Jan 24, 2011

    I for one find it very dissapointing that the xbmc team took away support for the xbox (especially strange due to the name xbox media center) because it was incabable of advancements/moderately not legal, where as installing this on an appletv2 is completely illegal

  • theuni Jan 24, 2011

    @Tomatosoup
    Check your facts. XBMC for Xbox could not be distributed because it required a private SDK to build, thus binaries were tainted.

    And we didn’t “take away” anything, we just didn’t want to do it anymore. Google XBMC4Xbox if you want to stay up to date there.

  • Binkocd Jan 24, 2011

    Can’t find a yes or no, but does it work on iPhone 3G? I know the iPhone 3G not an A4 proc, but didn’t know if it would work. Thanks

  • jj Jan 24, 2011

    Comon guys really no RTMP what, what, what you wrote this is a full complete install of XBMC, and then my plugins doesn’t work???, any plans??

  • phez Jan 24, 2011

    @Sandreas

    Correct, it only outputs at 720p, so its quite useless in my books still. I raised this issue ages ago with ATV1 but got flamed. Forget the ATV, better off buying an Acer Revo and enjoy 1080 as it should be, not some scaled down attempt on crappy hardware.

  • topfs2 Jan 25, 2011

    @jj
    We are so sorry, we will remove all the code and everything and release it when it is perfect in every way (which something never can be). And we will give you all the money back. Are you happy?

    Please people, have some gratefulness that you get xbmc on these devices and have some sympathy, we do this for fun and for free after all.

  • SjG Jan 25, 2011

    Wow you guys are really getting crapped on for making this for apple products hey!! the thing is I hated apple forever then finally gave in and bought my first apple product which was an iPad, and have to say i love the thing! The one thing I always said that it was missing was XBMC for it because it’s the perfect product for a such a good media center! So just wanted to say I appreciate every second the developers put in to it! Thank you!!

  • tom Jan 25, 2011

    No android ver???

  • X3lectric Jan 25, 2011

    iShit myself when I read this.

  • Derek Jan 25, 2011

    @topfs2
    topfs2, couldn’t agree more. Some people are so ungrateful. As a first release on a low-power platform this is awesome, I really expected to see some kind of transcoding solution streaming from an XBMC ‘server’ but to see a version of the software (albeit a v1.0) on iOS is fantastic. Thank you, really appreciated.

  • jj Jan 25, 2011

    You completely misunderstood my comment, I am not ungrateful, all I was saying is why write that this is “not an initial port”, “not a beta”, all I am asking is that you write that some parts does not work yet.

    That way people can decide if it’s worth the effort or that it might be better to wait,

    So Keep up the good work,

  • Mike Jan 25, 2011

    Hi devs – nice work on this!

    Someone mentioned the iPhone Remote app – I’ve reverse engineered the protocol for the audio-only versions of this app and have implemented a back end that talks to it, so if you’re looking at doing the same this might help you start off in the right direction. It’s at http://qtunes.org.

  • wosie Jan 25, 2011

    @Binkocd
    100% no, it would not.

  • topfs2 Jan 25, 2011

    @jj
    If you are not ungrateful you have an awful way of showing it.. It is missing a few details, and tbh I think rtmp is just an oversight, something that was forgotten or not tested. It is a full version and it is not a beta, it may contain bugs, like any other software, which this likely is.

    Proper way is not to complain but to submit a bugreport with all it entails (debuglogs etc.).

  • bAum Jan 25, 2011

    Great work!

  • BobF Jan 25, 2011

    @Gyro
    Of course Apple was the one to actually remove the VLC app, it’s their store. However, it was at the request of a lead developer on the VLC project.

    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/01/08/vlc-app-removed-from-app-store/

  • Big Ugly Man With a Stupid Punchable Face Jan 25, 2011

    Blimey! Never expected that. Not anytime soon. Certainly makes the Apple TV 2 look like a perfect device for easy HTPC around the house. I take my hat off to you!

  • Chris Jan 25, 2011

    Rtmp support would be awesome but as it is you guys have done an amazing job thanks so much and keep up the great work.

  • ste Jan 26, 2011

    @Binkocd

    yes it does work

  • Xander Jan 26, 2011

    Does this version of XBMC on the AT2 also support watching of live TV channels, streamed via TVHeadend? (On my old XBOX, this works just by adding the TVHeadend source)

  • George Jan 26, 2011

    Sounds fantastic. Seeing that you’ve pretty much successfully ported XBMC to the ARM platform, are there perhaps any plans to create a port for Maemo 5 (Fremantle) ? This is the OS that runs on the Nokia N900 Internet tablet (website: maemo.org). It’s debian-based, and seeing that XBMC is available for Ubuntu, I would like to think that this would be one of the easiest ports to do. Feedback on this would be highly appreciated, thanks.

  • Willtur Jan 26, 2011

    Will this work on JB ipod touches also?

  • E Jan 27, 2011

    Thank you!!! Been looking for a wifi-enabled XBMC ‘box’ for a while and bought the Apple TV within 10 minutes of reading about this. Just finished the JB, load and setting up shares. h264 vids work perfectly. Got the stutter on other files but will wait to see if the code can be cleaned up to address this. Very impressed with this.
    Thanks again.

  • Stefan Jan 27, 2011

    Hey, congratulations on the port. I really appreciate it.

    One comment though: Please don’t demo your accomplishments on videos using pirated (or “seemingly pirated”) movies. Among certain people this creates the impression (and I’m exaggerating to make the point) “all these OSS freaks do is write software to hack servers and steal software” which is obviously bullshit. (In my experience, specially OSS developers are very concerned about licenses!)

    I mean, come on. I have 1,5TB worth of TV recordings on my harddisk(s), and not a single illegally copied movie.
    I *LOVE* XBMC. If I had an iPad I’d install it there too.

    But I wouldn’t want people to look at me and XBMC and say “you use XBMC.. so you stole all your films then?”
    I want it to play in the same serious arena as all other media center frontends do.

    just my €0,02 …

  • Vanhaakonnen Jan 27, 2011

    It would be very great if VNSI or Streamdev would also be supportet. I don’t know how to compile with pvr support :(

  • Laurence Jan 27, 2011

    I just tried following the directions on the wiki for the atv2 and I’m getting some 404 errors and ‘Couldn’t find package org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2′.

    Awesome! but thanks, you just made me part with £80 for an ATV.. thankfully it’s small enough to be able to hide from the wife. Keep up the top notch work!

    Oh yes, forgot to say not used xbmc since the original xbox days (early versions) so looking foward to trying it out again (installing now on my phone)

  • Si Jan 27, 2011

    Got to say….pleasantly surprised at how well this actually plays on an iphone 4. setup is a pain due to lack of control but streaming 720p dts mkv over wireless plays flawlessly. i really expected it to struggle with playback. I’ve been a long time user of xbmc on various platforms and the team just keep on impressing me. Now the only thing to think about is……do I upset the girlfriend and go out and buy a new ATV!! :)

    Cheers guys. Keep up the excellent work!

  • Si Jan 27, 2011

    ……and now tested 1080p DTS MKV…..also streams and plays back flawlessly.

    Topsf2,

    Can any arm based architecture handle 1080p at the moment?

    @Willtur

    It should run on a 3rd gen iPod touch (16 and 32 GB models) and the 4th gen iPod touch (all sizes) as well.

  • davidr Jan 27, 2011

    this is absolutely fantastic! a 100$ multi-purpose, tiny streamer with xbmc _and_ can stream all my media to my ipad. nice work!

  • Dobby Jan 28, 2011

    Dear XBMC developers. You rule. For like a decade. Sorry it took me this long to donate.

    Bought an Apple TV 2, installed xbmc on it — sure it’s a little rough compared to the one I’d been running on my XBOX 1, but the damn thing works! And now my xbox gets to leave the living room forever, and my wife gets her minimalist aesthetic with the apple TV attached to the back of our wall mounted TV, and everyone is happy.

    Especially me.

  • Fmstrat Jan 28, 2011

    Is there a way to make the Fast Forward button skip ahead 30 seconds and Rewind to skip back 10 seconds instead of the usual fast-forward behavior? On the iPad, FF and R act a bit wonky with buffering sometimes, and I’ve always been a fan of the single tap quick-skip.

  • Michael Jan 28, 2011

    Is it true that you can not turn it off without having to reinstall the software

  • Thomas Jan 28, 2011

    This is absolutely beautiful. Now I basically have 1TB of movies on my iPod through windows network sharing. I’m suprised at how stable it is too. Definitly can be improved by making more for iPod touch instead of iPod. Some things (menu buttons) are really small but the video is transcoded perfectly and in excellent quality. Also if they could make it so you could swipe to scroll down list that would be awesome. Only improvements from here I hope. Thanks for taking the time to port it. PS3 now please lol.

  • Rob Jan 28, 2011

    I dont get it. Playing the high quality MKVs can be played through the Apple Tv and iTunes no need for xbmc

  • Alex Jan 28, 2011

    I saw that the intallation instructions changed for the atv2, what’s the difference with the new commands?, thaks for your answer!

  • Anonymous Jan 29, 2011

    @Fmstrat
    You need to create the advancedsettings.xml to configure the 30 second jump increments.. see here
    http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Advancedsettings.xml

  • Tim Jan 29, 2011

    Amazing work team! Donation just sent.

  • Alpha17x Jan 29, 2011

    This seems really exciting, unfortunately there don’t appear to be any instructions on how to install this without a Mac. I shall wait, and hope I find something, or the process becomes more apparent.

  • Hannibal Jan 29, 2011

    First a wanna say: Wow! XBMC is a piece of software I wouldn’t miss any more. The development in the last months is incredible. There is no other media center with such a nice interface and functionallity. And it is getting better and better -> mysql backend, the planed pvr feature and now the next step to xbmc on embeded devices. Thank you so much!

    By now I’m using XBMC on 2 Ubuntu-based HTPCs und I would by several atv2 for all rooms – if there wouldn’t be the jb problem. Tethered is no option for me, so I think I have to wait ’til there will be some other embeded devices with the posibillity to install xbmc. Android would be really nice. In Germany/Austria etc. their is this box available since 11/2010 -> http://www.webtube-hd.com. I think this could by an interessting box if it wasn’t much to expensive (for 250€ I can almost by an atom-based HTPC).

    Anyway – keep that great work up!

    I think I need a little help. :)
    I have XBMC installed on my Apple TV (4.2.1). I am able to add source, which is located on an external hard drive connected to my mac mini.
    I have SMB checked on my share folder and on XBMC I added a source using: SMB://username:password@IP/movies (Using my username, password, mac mini IP address)
    If finds the server just find and starts scanning for new media. After is finds about 5 movies, it stops the scanning with an error message. This happens always on a video_TS movie. I have the movie name in a folder and the video_TS data inside the folder. The XBMC scanner stops on this file!
    It seems to scan all other movies just fine. (mostly mkv’ss and avi’s). Is there a setting I need to use or this is just a bug of the Apple TV XBMC??
    Thanks for any help!

  • troy Jan 29, 2011

    i really love xbmc want to submerge more into it i have an apple 1st gen with the boxxee patch love the skins love the set up run all my music on it but cant seem to get a smart playlist to set up kinda new to this and would like to learn more not too techie but i doo think that this development is tight and maybe all the bugs are not worked out yet but you guys are def. on the right track, any info on a smart playlist would be helpful making the world a better place thnx

  • Pete Jan 29, 2011

    This is fantastic news XBMC does it again. With the hardware limitations of the Apple TV 2 only meaning it can output 720p I will stick with my mac mini for now but I have heard rumors of an Apple TV 3 which will be very similar but will up the output to 1080p using an A5 processor the same as iPad 2 and iPhone 5. I think it’s a pretty logical step forward for apple so hopefully it will happen soon.

  • Alpha17x Jan 29, 2011

    What file do you actually use on the apple tv 2g to install this? do you have to compile something on your own from the source files. It’s not readily apparent.

  • Antonio Jan 29, 2011

    Guys, seriously, what can I say? This is an amazing acievement! I am really greatful to see that finally I can use my Iphone and Apple TV for watching ANY kind of video, with proper frame rates.

    Seriously, to all the people that are flaming the developers efforts, shame on you! This is probably one of the dev teams that has achieved the most in terms of scalability, platform diversity, and performance for any home theatre application. And what are they charging us? Nothing, NADA, NIl! So to anyone giving non-constructive critics, please think again and try to concentrate on the amazing job the dev team has done.

    I mean, a full blown ARM version of XBMC coded in so little time? THAT IS AMAZING.

    Thanks again to the devs, I’m testing the releases for iphone 4 and Applte TV (sorry, I ain’t got an ipad yet), and will do my best to help improving them by reporting anything I see.

    XBMC ROcks!!!!

  • qwertytical Jan 29, 2011

    Streaming 720hd to my iPhone – Amazing … you guys have done it again. Cant wait for Apple TV 2 to get a Windows jailbreak so I can get XBMC going on it.

  • AaronD Jan 30, 2011

    To all the developers, many thanks for the hard work. This is amazing. I now have an Acer Revo in the lounge and an Apple TV 2 in the bedroom – my first Apple purchase and only because of XBMC.

    Too all others asking about a Windows JB for ATV2 – check the forums. I did it, and I don’t own any other Apple products. Of course, it’s not straight forward, but it can be done.

  • A C Jan 30, 2011

    Just wanted to say thanks for the great work liberating the media through UPNP. Truly fantastic. Thank you.

  • Alpha17x Jan 30, 2011

    Has anyone had luck making this work on an apple tv2? I’ve managed to jailbreak mine amazingly enough but there seems to be a lot of incomplete and inconsistent instruction.

  • Rob Jan 30, 2011

    its deff not worth the effort at the moment. Much much easier and quicker to remux the MKV’s to M4V

  • sfar Jan 31, 2011

    First – hats off, this is is an amazing accomplishment and you guys deserve a lot of credit for pushing the xbmc platform forward (and investing a lot of time doing so)!!!

    I have both an ipad and an iphone 4 and can’t wait until the final release of the untethered jailbreak for the ipad is released so that I can install this. However, does it have support for the livetv plugins, such as tvheadend? If so, my wife will love it as she can bring the morning tv with her around the house in the morning…

  • FamousJerry Jan 31, 2011

    WOW that was easy, i went to BestBuy bought one, in under 45min i was up and running XBMC and that includes the jailbreak. Great work. Cant wait for more releases.

  • Miles Prower Jan 31, 2011

    Great, so you got XBMC running on closed systems. How about porting to the Playstation3 now? Heck, I’ll even buy it if you have to publish it on the PS Store with an official dev licence.

  • JST Feb 01, 2011

    Good job guys! I always enjoyed XBMC on my old xbox. When i saw this article i smiled and directly ordered the aTV2. In a few hours i got XBMC working.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Brent212 Feb 01, 2011

    Damn, 8 pages of questions, many of which were repeated like every 5 posts, and hardly any answers. Thanks god that guy got an answer to how to switch the temperature from F degrees to C.

    I don’t see how this can even be used… no storage on the ATV2, and apparently the USB port is worthless.

  • SoLiDG Feb 01, 2011

    Great job!
    Works great on iPad!
    Streaming from my satellite dreambox without a pc, LOVE it!
    AND 720P without a problem.

  • Tobias Feb 02, 2011

    I have been a fan of XBMC since years back first with XBOX and now on my HTPC.

    Must say that you guys are really doing a great job and i will start Contribute to this great product!

  • David Feb 02, 2011

    @Brent212

    There is 8gb storage in the ATV2

  • Alessandro Feb 02, 2011

    Great job!
    But I believe you shouldn’t advertise it as a ready software as is being done in the media. As a XBMC fan, at the moment I saw the possibility at the main page and researched in some forums and sites I spent about U$ 200 on a Apple TV2 (in my country it’s imported it has higher prices than the US$ 98 you are used to).
    I spent some days to figure out its setup and finally when I tested the first movies that are on my database I found out lack of video performance, many instabilities on skin and accessing network storage.
    I know it’s still under development for Apple TV2 and I’m glad that you are sharing with us the application but my unique point is that you should be clear that it’s not stable enough yet. I bought an Apple TV2 to put XBMC on it with the intention to give to my father the same video database I use at my home with a XBMC on an iMac connected to my TV, but my conclusion is that it’s not a stable solution to install at his home. If I knew beforehand its performance I would have bought another cheaper box with a simple file list interface and would give up XMBC interface.

  • Anonymous Feb 02, 2011

    @Brent212
    Do you see the support link on the top?
    I can understand it was critical to switch to C considering that you see no use of the app at all….

  • Anonymous Feb 02, 2011

    @Brent212
    It’s perfect for my setup, atv2 hooked up to NAS as a secondary HTPC… 100$ and tiny form factor, it works great.

  • CJ Feb 02, 2011

    @Brent212
    Are you really that foolish? (and all the others complaining that they aren’t getting answer!)

    This is a COMMENTS section. The article is a news piece – the Comments are for commenting (surprisingly enough) on the news piece. eg saying “well done”, and the like.

    If you have questions you want answered, go the the forum!!! Or do you just want to be spoon-fed without actually having to do anything yourself?!

    And your question about what the point is without local storage is beyond the pale… do you know anything about XBMC?

About XBMC

XBMC is a free and open source media player application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. XBMC is available for multiple operating-systems and hardware platforms, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.
