XBMC 9.11: Camelot

Posted By: Team XBMC on Dec 24, 2009 in Site News

camelotIt’s been quite a while in the making (and maybe a bit late), but Camelot has arrived for Windows, OSX, Linux, and XBMC Live, and just in time for the holidays. Noteworthy changes include a revamped user interface via the new default skin “Confluence“, DirectX support by default for the Windows platform, a complete reorganization of the settings menus, automatic video information extraction, and smoother video playback. In addition, all scrapers have been updated, new remotes are supported out of the box, and codecs have been updated for more reliable playback. For a full changelog, see the end of this post.

Look to the download page for the good stuff. We wish to thank our community for helping to make XBMC what it is. Several new skins and plugins have been created since Babylon, be sure to check them out as well.

For the developers, this is where the fun starts. To quote the great Linus Torvalds, “A release is not so much of a birth of a new version, it’s more of a laying-to-rest of an old one. It’s also an end to a fairly quiet period.” It’s now open-season for us to start looking forward and begin merging in all those new features that have been brewing. Enjoy our latest offering as we get back to work!

As a brief aside, we’re looking to recruit a talented web developer as well as a graphics designer for a few future endeavors. If you’re interested in more detail and have serious skills (no weekend warriors please), drop us a line.

Update: It looks like there’s a problem with the live installer causing installation to fail. Please hold tight while we look into it.

Update #2: Turns out the live issue was brought on by a last-minute upstream change.  We’ll get this fixed ASAP, though due to the holidays, we ask for your patience.

Update #3: Download links updated for 9.11 repack. Installer should now work correctly.

  • ikaros Dec 24, 2009

    This is best xbmc release ever, now is possible use xbmc in windows without hangs and unstability.
    my request is:
    - SVN Repo Installer, maybe better rename it in future releases. When basic user see SVN Repo Installer, it could think – what hell it is :)
    better is move it inside settings and add new tab “addons”

    - some performance tricks, when move inside settings happen sometimes small freezings (with scrapers selection).

    - Confluence, when press M , music player pop up and back ground hides, hiding need add with main page also.

  • Freddyflinty Dec 24, 2009

  • Oral-B Dec 24, 2009

    I just upgraded from 9.11 RC1 and I can’t switch back to the Confluence skin anymore (“Incompatible skin. We require skins of 2.10 or higher.”). Only skin that works is Rapier, which I installed through SVN Repo Installer before.

    Ideas anyone?

  • SmearedBlackInk Dec 24, 2009

    Perfect timing on the release. Thanks for all your hard work.

  • misiek Dec 24, 2009

    how to upgrade in ubuntu?

  • Maister Dec 24, 2009

    This is fantastic. I’ve been using the SVN a long time, and recently the betas and RC1. With pretty much perfect VDPAU support now, XBMC on Linux is super awesome. Merry christmas or whatever you’d might celebrate to the XBMC team. :D

  • Maxim Dec 24, 2009

  • cchance Dec 24, 2009

    anyone else wish this cud run on a WDTVlive box?

  • John Dec 24, 2009

    Awesome, thanks so much XBMC team! Your work runs my living room =D

  • Chris Dec 24, 2009

    I have been using mediaportal for a long time but got sick of all the instability. XBMC in combination with the AEON skin is a total winner. I am very happy that so many people contribute so much of their free time to help develop an amazing program like xbmc. I salute you, thank you and like to wish you all the very best in 2010!

  • J.R. Ewing Dec 24, 2009

    Today my Asrock ION 330 HT was delivered. Just now I tried to install XBMC Live 9.11 final release, but unfortunately there is some bug in the installation process.Team XBMC, I hope you can fix the bug shortly! Many thanx and I wish you all the best for 2010 and keep up the good work!

  • jmarshall Dec 24, 2009

    Merry Christmas everyone from sunny NZ – enjoy the new release!

  • Nick Dec 24, 2009

    Great work everyone! Nice to see this land before Christmas.

  • commanderflash Dec 24, 2009

    Love the new version and Confluence skin. Release version fails to install on my system. Looks like it’s back to RC1 until I can figure this out.

  • commanderflash Dec 24, 2009

    Per a comment in the forum, a repack is on the way to address this issue.

  • J.R. Ewing Dec 24, 2009

    @commanderflash
    There’s a bug in the installer. Team XBMC is working on it.

  • Livio Dec 24, 2009

    Why not 9.12? It’s December, the 12th, not 11th!

  • Robgue Dec 24, 2009

    Awesome. Thanks for the hard work and dedication. Xbmc is a shining example of OSS at it’s best.

  • Asch Dec 24, 2009

    Superb. You got it all right, and it’s only getting better. Feel proud, and have confidence in your continued work. Respect!

  • astro Dec 24, 2009

    Thanks for all the work
    And of course we will have patience :-)
    We wait patiently for the live version, enjoy your holidays :-)

  • theuni Dec 24, 2009

    @Livio
    Haha, I was wondering who would ask first. It was originally 9.10, though we didn’t make that. It’s a pain to rename all the strings after we’ve branched for release, so we decided to stick with 9.11.

  • Livio Dec 24, 2009

    @theuni
    D’oh! What a pity. 9.12 would look even nicer as a Christmas present (in Poland and many other European countries we celebrate Christmas even on 24th of December in the evening – just for folks from America) ;) .

  • Fanatix Dec 24, 2009

    Now all that XBMC is missing from being almost perfect in my mind is a great “App Store” style interface directly in the GUI settings, similar to that of Boxee’s “App Box”, that would allow us to very easily installation new plugins, scripts, and skins, etc. :)

    Sorry but I think the SVN Repo Installer is not user friendly enough yet, the GUI for it needs to be integrated into the skin, and not a separate plugin.

    I feel that Boxee has got the right idea here with their App Box”, which basically steels the idea from the iPhone “App Store”, for easy install, updating, and uninstall of Boxee plugins ;)

  • Tiberiu Oprisiu Dec 24, 2009

    I had beta 1 running on an Acer REVO 3610 with ion and it worked perfectly. Once I installed it i could no longer play the HD videos off the Nvidia Ion and they are being offloaded to the CPU. I also cannot select XBMC to play the video file using the DSPlayer instead of the default one. Am i missing something or is that a bug in the code?

  • Jeremy Dec 24, 2009

    How do I revert back to RC1 after updating to final.

    Cheers

  • Jezz_X Dec 24, 2009

    Probably because you were using the experimental DS player branch which hasn’t made it into the main trunk version of xbmc yet (which is what this is)

  • jmarshall Dec 24, 2009

    @Fanatix – we’re with you on the addons stuff – rwparris2 (and TheUni) have both been working hard at getting something nice and scalable hooked up on the addons front. We were hoping to have it ready for this release, but it wasn’t quite up to the standard that we set ourselves and thus we held off on publishing something we weren’t 100% happy with. The plan is another release in the New Year once we have a couple of the new feature branches merged, so we’ll get it sorted for that one.

  • ehunter Dec 25, 2009

    does anyone know where to get XBMCLive 9.11 RC1? (I deleted my partition when i tried the final install)

    I think I might do a RC1 install then and upgrade manually to the final version.

    Thanks

  • 飘风 Dec 25, 2009

    Good Working !!!

  • RabbiDreed Dec 25, 2009

    You’re all stars in the development team. This is the best Open Source app I’ve ever seen and used!

    Great! Hope to see that in a future stable release then, no rush, let the WAF decide if it is really ready :D

    Maybe add a web-page here for uploading? MeediOS’s “OpenMAID” repository framework is open source.

    All is XBMC missing is finished PVR frontend, but we can wait with the unfinished one since it works, and it’s what counts.

    In te old XBOX days we had the XBMCScripts script for this.. it was a seperate script, but it was easy as hell, and looked exactly like the default PM skin on the Xbox. :)

  • Thomas Dec 25, 2009

    It says “Changed from Open GL to DirectX for GUI and video rendering.”. Does this mean GPU acceleration on windows?

  • unlockitnow Dec 25, 2009

    Library button(enable library) in 9.11 is missing,library mode not working!

  • AleXXX Dec 25, 2009

    I updated my XBMC (update from 9.10 to 9.11) successfully. The new version is great, but I have a problem. When I play video files or DVD I have voice only, but no video. Instead of the video I have only a white full-screen.

  • Daniele B - Rome Dec 25, 2009

    Merry Christmas guys! Great product and very very cool gift for all of us. The best media centre software on the web!! Thanks all

  • James Dec 25, 2009

    Looks excellent. Should I go 32 or 64 bit under Linux on an Asrock 330?

    I also got problems playing HD videos with rc1 and 9.11 final. It only works smooth on Beta1-2.
    Asrock ION 330

  • Dylan Dec 26, 2009

    Will this run on a modded original xbox?

  • Revo Dec 26, 2009

    IMHO all that is missing now is Spotify support via despotify for us XBMC users with Spotify premium accounts :)

    That and plugins for SVT Play, TV4 Play, and Kanal 5 Play would make most Plex users from Swedish move back.

    Voddler access directly from XBMC would not hurt either, since Voddler Player don’t allow playback of local files ;)

  • Nas Dec 26, 2009

    who cares about all this? Boxee stole(was given) some code for their system, now they have surpassed XBMC….can someone explain why this is better than Boxee?

  • sinarquia Dec 26, 2009

    Thanks a lot for yet another release of the best ‘media center’ software!!!!!!!!!1

  • virtualdiver Dec 26, 2009

    I installed this on a fresh installation of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic using the streamlined install procedure suggested on the XBMC website. When I start up XBMC, my mouse cursor lags and jumps around the screen so bad that it takes several tries before I can click on the button to exit XBMC. Once I’m back to the Karmic desktop, the mouse works normally again… anybody have this problem or know what the issue is??

  • jeff Dec 26, 2009

    will this work with Vista 64bit ?

  • David Dec 26, 2009

    Don’t get me wrong, I love the new GUI installer for XBMC Live… but I find it incredibly hard to understand.
    Who wrote this? IBM circa 1985?

  • Mossy Dec 26, 2009

    This might sound ridiculous but I cant see a default.xbe file in the folder I downloaded so what do I link to in the evox.ini file? Any help would be very much appreciated.

  • Tim Dec 26, 2009

    Nas :

    It depends on what you want. XBMC has tons of flexibility and customization options for both the appearance and behavior of the program, great for tech-savy people and a/v nerds. Boxee on the other hand has less customization but is very straight forward and simple, may be better for the common man that wants simplicity and not a lot of options.

  • baka Dec 27, 2009

    @Dylan
    yea i was wondering about which one to pick because its called XBOX Media Center with no XBOX download link. What is this?

  • jabbathewocket Dec 27, 2009

    @Mossy

    You cannot get the xbox version from this website due to copyright/requiring the Xbox SDK from MS to build.. there are places to find it.. just not here.

  • alanwww1 Dec 27, 2009

    I just want to thank the developers for this great release which made me and my family so much joy using it. And of course it was great to follow the development on trac and help them debugging and testing, This is a great release with so much great new functions in it. I feel it is time for me to donate again.

    Thanks again,

    Alan from Hungary

  • bobrooney Dec 27, 2009

    @AleXXX
    I have the same problem. It looks like you need a graphic card which is directX9 compatible or at least a new driver. There should be also a OpenGL version for windows available which will work for you. Look in the forums.

  • tocixxx Dec 27, 2009

    @Jezz_X
    Thanks for the info. Should be in the changelog..

  • keesjanssen Dec 27, 2009

    Thanks team XBMC!
    This is a great release for me.
    I’am looking forward to the futere releases.

  • Dork-2.0 Dec 27, 2009

    DUDES, PLEASE DONT STOP SUPPORTING THE XBOX!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I so dont want 9.04 to be the last stable release ok’d by you guys. Cause that means my xbox is obsolete. It’s STILL the best/cheapest media center out there!!!!

  • cliusn Dec 27, 2009

    @baka
    you can search key words:”xbmc xbox” in google web site ,and you’ll find it. perhaps ,you’ll wait some days,XBMC 9.11 Camelot XBOX version hasn’t been released yet.

  • Timey Dec 27, 2009

    Hello @ all,

    after the repack of the live version installer I have another issue.

    1. Installation works fine on usb stick with and without VLM (don’t really know what this is)

    –> without
    Startlogo appears. Prompt console to login in XBMC. Type xbcm leads to message ‘cannot start x-window’

    –> with VLM
    Startlogo appears. screen turns black.

    Could anybody help here ?

  • Timey Dec 27, 2009
  • Alex Dec 27, 2009

    @virtualdiver

    I had the same problem on Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 – my motherboard is a Sapphire PI-AM3RS785G.
    Installing the proprietary AMD driver solved the issue!

  • Fabian Dec 27, 2009

    Same here..

    DON’T DUMP THE XBOX!

    I keep hearing 9.11 “will” be available, but the latest T3Ch is still XBMC-9.04.1-FIXED.

    That was months ago, ugg…

  • Joseph Dec 27, 2009

  • Bassist Dec 28, 2009

    I surely hope they are releasing it for the original xbox, I spend more time watching and listening to stuff on that than I do on my laptop.

    Camelot for Windows is a significant improvement and you should be proud of what you have all accomplished.

    I can now finally get rid of the two old Xbox units I used in the house. They were still in use because I could never get the Windows versions to display properly (tearing, jumping, and 24fps sync issues) when using clone mode on my nvidia 9600gt. My goal of a general purpose server, for both the office and as a HTPC in the living room is now a reality thanks to Camelot 9.11 and Windows 7. Syncing the output to the display and now I get flawless 1080p output via my 9600gt in both the Living room via hdmi (Samsung 52″) and in the office via VGA (Westy 32″). No more fighting with Beyond TV, ultramon and who gets a display at the right frequency. No more playing with all those video settings in the old versions of XBMC. It plays movies back with no stuttering, no tearing, no need to adjust the audio offset. Oh Oh and now it does it with much less compute power. You will not see those huge CPU utilization spikes while sitting in menus.

    XBMC Camelot 9.11 is truly a big jump forward in stability and video quality. Thanks for keeping PM3.HD skin. I checked out Boxee and others and XBMC still rocks as being the most user friendly and capable. Keep up the good work and a big thank you to all of the dedicated developers who support this endeavor. Camelot 9.11 is on the verge of perfection…

    i just installed this great program but its telling me that my computer is missing d3dx9 42 dll. can any one help me get this file?

  • George Dec 28, 2009

    No matter how many times I re-download and install, the installer freezes when it gets to the point of downloading components. It lets me click next and supposedly completes the installation; however when I try to run it, I get an error message stating that I am missing d3dx942.dll.

  • Jezz_X Dec 28, 2009

    @vic
    @George

    Are you guys actually installing the directx installer that comes with the xbmc installer or just cancelling it.
    But if you are having these sorts of problems you need to go to the forum and post a proper bug report with all the stuff like what version of windows you are running and so on

  • Home Wrecka Dec 29, 2009

    I have the same problem as Vic & George “d3dx942dll is missing”…. I have checked the forums.. and I dont see the solution.. can some-1 please point me in the right direction

  • Direct X Fix Dec 29, 2009

    @Home Wrecka
    @George

    Below file should work for 64 bit version of Windows 7 & Vista

    Copy the file where xbmc.exe is located.

    [link removed]

    For 32 bit version search for the same file name (d3dx9_42.dll) in windows Xp

  • theuni Dec 29, 2009

    @Direct X Fix
    No, don’t do that at all. Really. Don’t do that.

    We include the necessary runtimes in our installer. If they don’t work correctly for some reason, use the correct _runtime installers_ from microsoft.com, not some random files you find on the net.

  • Direct X Fix Dec 29, 2009

    Yes Uni you are correct but how to get this to work under windows 7 64 bit.
    Microsoft doesn’t provide direct X 9 runtime for 7.

  • Home Wrecka Dec 29, 2009

    OK…. I am running 7ultimate 64bit on my HTPC… so your saying there is a runtime installer that I’m missing?

    p.s. I had a older version of XBMC that worked beautiful on my HTPC, but I un-installed to upgrade to this one… I’m paying for it now

  • Jezz_X Dec 29, 2009

    @Direct X Fix
    It works perfectly fine for me on win7 64bit Its my main dev machine. I even installed it on a fresh install and the installer (which launched the directx installer) downloaded and got everything it needed to run

    If you having issues you need to go to the forum and post exactly your system specs so we can work it out properly

  • Revo Dec 29, 2009

    Revo :IMHO all that is missing now is Spotify support via despotify for us XBMC users with Spotify premium accounts

    lonelycoder.com’s HTS Showtime integrates to Spotify music service via libspotify, could this be added to XBMC too?

    libspotify is the official C API library to allows third-party developers to write applications that utilize Spotify services.
    http://developer.spotify.com/en/libspotify/overview/

    You still need a Spotify premium account, and XBMC team developers need to apply for an application key for XBMC.

    Srsly.. I’ll damn u all if there’s no Xbox’s XBMC Camelot at all !

  • Michael Dec 29, 2009

    What I like the xbox version is that it loads the video faster and play very smoothly in the wireless mode. But in apple TV’s version, it take 10 times longer to load, and play not smooth as the xbox version. Apple TV has a better cpu, and should be better than the xbox and I didn’t expect that. Looks like the software designing issue. Hope this version fix that.

  • Predatorftp Dec 31, 2009

    Does it support Microsoft Media center remote control, now ?

  • truant Jan 01, 2010

    XBMC devs – you guys frackin rock. Thanks very, very much for all your hard work. My life is better because XBMC exists.

  • dfrain Jan 01, 2010

    Hiho, why u ask for stopping development ?
    Is there something I haven´t read ?

  • Robert Jan 02, 2010

    DON’T DUMP THE XBOX!

    It’s cheap, fast, boots fast, works, and did I mention it is fast? A movie starts within seconds, the windows version doesn’t.
    And all the different hardware. The xbox is just a xbox, simple. For the PC you do not specify any basic configuration and stick with it.

  • ghost Jan 02, 2010

    Guys is there a link to this problem I’m having ?

    1. I rip my own dvd

    2. it created a bunch of VOB,INFO ECT… the usual dvd files

    3.when I load the video_ts folder in XBMC and do a search for fan art and movie info etc .It reads all the VOB as a seperate movie… thus I have lots of movie clips in my library of the same movie and poster ? what gives

    I don’t expect a full info here but can you guys link me to a specific forum thread ..or solution ..thx

  • Pyrofallout Jan 03, 2010

    No more official development for XBOX? Let’s hope T3CH never goes away. All us original XBMC users and followers will be tossed in the trash. :-/

  • Jae Jan 03, 2010

    @Pyrofallout
    If it wasn’t for us XBOX guys there would be no XBMC. All of a sudden XBMC changes its name and leaves us XBOX guys to rot on its old throne we built. Is that selling out? I am so disappointed.

    Jae.

    P.S. Lov’n the new version, even tho i cannot install it onto my xbox.

    Actually, I’m pretty sure it was the XBMC developers who created XBMC, not the users…

    I’m sad to see it go too; but it’s not like keeping the software up to date will ever bring the xbox up to modern media center standards, since the hardware is old and un-upgradable. As long as the old builds still run on the old hardware and play old videos, there’s not really much else that can be done~

    if it wasn’t for us xbmc devs there would be no xbmc. we haven’t sold out to anyone, we just moved on from ancient hw. are free to take the code and do whatever you want with it as long as you respect the license.

    finally, a reality check. exactly what makes the old versions useless all of a sudden?

  • MDavid Jan 04, 2010

    Hi,
    thanks for the new version, it rocks!
    But when will it be release for ubuntu jaunty? Karmic version is already on the repo, the there is no jaunty version since beta 2.

  • MDavid Jan 04, 2010

    @spiff
    Well, for one new scripts/plugins won’t work on the older versions…

  • Pyrofallout Jan 04, 2010

    @spiff

    Agreed, without the devs, we would never have had XBMC in the first place. But I wouldn’t call the XBOX “ancient” hardware. People still mod them regularly and use them for media players. Sure it can’t stream HD video without taking a dump, but even considering that it can’t do HD, where else can you get a standalone media player anywhere near as rich as XBMC on the XBOX for the price? You can pickup original XBOXs for less than $50 all day long. Sure I would love to have a modded Apple TV (which seems to the next cheapest standalone solution with XBMC) on every TV in my home, but at over $200 each, I can put in 4-6 XBOXS for the cost of 1 Apple TV. I don’t forsee myself ditching the original XBOX platform for a media player, unless XBMC ever comes to the 360.

  • SteveH Jan 04, 2010

    My question is when will WMC Extender properly work with VIDEO_TS folders to my Xbox 360? I just ripped my collection hoping to use my 360 and found out the extender doesn’t work with VIDEO_TS folders properly.

    any chance of compiling x64 native windows version?

  • cyber7 Jan 06, 2010

    Problems I am experiencing with this release includes:
    1. “iwconfig” gives a kernel-panic.
    2. “SMB” browsing is not supported.
    3. Missing Network Setup.
    4. wpasupplicant update crashes machine.

    I have tried this on various machines and all of them gives roughly the same problems.

    My question(s):
    * Why is the SMB file-sharing not working as in previous releases where I could browse to the share, set the content?
    * Why is the Network in such a broken state? Previously I could set IP’s et-kie…
    * Why would wpasupplicant update crash machines when doing a iwconfig?

    Just my 10c – See as comments, not slag as I realy like the release… (Busy writing customization around the problems :) )

  • jas1984 Jan 07, 2010

    Great work on the latest release guys (and gals if any) – install went perfect without a hitch (well after I realised there was a repack)

    Confluence is a great skin, and a wise alternative default to PM3 – the library views look great, I can actually see what my media files are encoded with h264/vc-1/dts etc… etc…

    My only issue as mentioned by cyber7 – there is no network setup from the skin.

    Apart from that its all good!
