XBMC 13.1 beta1 Gotham

xbmc-gotham-13_1-beta

Only a week ago we released the stable version of 13.0 codename “Gotham”. So far, from the responses we have received, people are pretty excited about it and are happily using it. Now that more people are starting to use the stable release, several issues popped up, that we now hope to address with this 13.1 beta1 release. Do note that this release contain only fixes and no new features. So it should be safe to install on top of current 13.0 release. In due time we will of course release a 13.1 stable version after we are confident there are no regressions compared to 13.0 stable.

Fixes

  • * Better recovery of VDPAU on errors.
  • * Fixes for cropping of interlaced content using VDPAU.
  • * Fix for FLAC tracks with large embedded images not playing.
  • * Fix for crash if librtmp wasn’t available.
  • * Fix for ffmpeg building on linux using later versions of librtmp.
  • * Fix for broken m4a, mp4 playback with paplayer.
  • * Fix for the hint text not being shown in editcontrols once unfocused.
  • * Fix minor memory leak in PlayMedia builtin function.
  • * Fix albumartist use in song smartplaylists.
  • * Use unique client broadcast UID in the PVR api.

Important notice

Linux users Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.10 have been deprecated by canonical/ubuntu. This means there will be no more XBMC builds available for those version. You will have to upgrade you Ubuntu to a newer version to receive XBMC updates again.

Backup your data Before upgrading we would recommend you create a backup of your current userdata folder which contains all your current settings and database files. In the unlikely case that something went wrong during your upgrade, a backup will ensure that you are still able to go back to the previous state. Where the userdata folder is located on your system can be found on our userdata wiki page. Do note that when first upgrading from Frodo 12.x it may take some time until you see the familiar homescreen as several internal upgrades need to be performed.

Add-ons As mentioned in previous blog posts, due to changes related to our add-on system and skin improvement, certain plugins, scripts and skins may become incompatible when upgrading from Frodo to Gotham. Sadly this is part of the continuing process of development and improvement. We hope the impact of these changes will be limited but we feel a warning would be beneficial. If there are any addons you particularly depend on, we advise that you visit the forum thread of that addon to see if the author has ensured support in XBMC 13.

Installing on OSX As XBMC is an unsigned application on OSX, you may need to go through a slightly different process to start it the first time. After you have copied XBMC to the Applications folder, you will need to “right click” or “two finger click” XBMC from within the Applications folder and select “Open” and then accept the warning. You should only need to do this the first time you run XBMC.

Code base Since we have branched the XBMC core code for Gotham off from our main development master branch on Github it is important that you also build from the correct Github branch: http://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/tree/Gotham

How to Contribute

If you use these builds, we encourage you to submit bugs in Trac with sufficient information (following this guide: How to submit a bug report), provide support in our Forums where you can, or donate to the Foundation if you like. For a current FAQ on XBMC 13, visit our Gotham FAQ.

After having added the unstable repository and entering apt-get install xbmc it says:
“xbmc is already the newest version.”

    • Anonymous May 12, 2014

      Before updating,
      apt-get remove xbmc
      apt-get autoremove

And/or might be some other xbmc repos in /etc/apt/sources.list

      • Lirpa May 12, 2014

After this it still installs the 13.0.

There’s no entry with xbmc in /etc/apt/sources.list
I removed the ppa repo before I added the unstable.

        • Anonymous May 12, 2014

Sorry, same thing happening here, overlooked because I did the removal of the package first.

    • Jencie Samora May 13, 2014

My XBMC App for OS X Keeps freezing and crashing. When i try to stream a video it keeps crashing and quits on its own. pls fix this problem.

    • j876 May 18, 2014

You have to type in and run the command:

      sudo apt-get update

To update the local repository databases first.

      To just update XBMC:

Then type and run the command:

      sudo apt-get install xbmc

  • bthusby May 12, 2014

Will this help with the problems related to ATV2 crashing frequently when starting playback of video, downloading subtitles or just after being plain idle over the night?

    • Martijn May 12, 2014

you tell us. we cannot know/test everything

  • Neil May 12, 2014

When I try and do this I get an error reading of error “E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run ‘dpkg –configure -a’ to correct the problem. ” What does this mean?

    • jgtoranalc May 13, 2014

I am also getting this problem

      • jgtoranalc May 13, 2014

        I FIXED this problem…
You need to delete all the files in /var/lib/dpkg/updates and try again.

  • Redin May 12, 2014

Ok, Now, works fine. Previously version 13.0 dont work in my QiLive 97r tablet, but now, all ok.

  • Lirpa May 12, 2014

The unstable repo doesn’t contain 13.1 beta1 yet:
    https://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archive/unstable

    *rolleyes*

    • kib May 14, 2014

It took a little bit longer but it is here now. :)

  • il May 12, 2014

I think the option ” auto download first synced sub” should be brought back

    • qryber May 14, 2014

I agree, and I would like to add – in previous version, there was an option to store downloaded subs in Subs folder next to video, which is missing now….

      • kib May 14, 2014

It is in settings now, since subtitles are now a core component.

        • qryber May 17, 2014

I am aware of the change, but those options that we mentioned are not there…

  • Nesoxy May 12, 2014

Atv2 nas a hardware working :( . What is happening? Is this an end of atv2 as an hardware platform?

    • Ned Scott May 13, 2014

      What are you asking?

      • WooELephantYeah May 14, 2014

I’d be surprised if anybody on the internet can understand what the **** this person is on about LOL

  • marty stuart May 12, 2014

What is the recommended way for updating an ATV2? I just went with the latest nightly, which is not 13.1 but 14alpha1. Is that any good?

  • neroes May 12, 2014

how about the peripherals menu not showing the pulse eight adapter, while it will work and has a settings file
it’s kinda annoying that it can’t be changed inside xbmc

I installed XBMC Gotham 13 beta on my himedia q-10 ll (no emmc) and cannot play streams or movies on USB or hard disk because xbmc crashes

    Can someone help me out?

  • hris May 13, 2014

Please take all issues along with log files to the forums. If you do not post in the forums, your issues will probably go unnoticed/unfixed! Without proper logs and documentation it is impossible for the devs to stay on top of the issues. Thanks :)

  • Rik May 13, 2014

everytime when i start up Gotham i get this message

    ERROR: unable to create GUI.exiting
as a total geek at this kan anyone tell me what te problem is??

    Thanks !

    • kib May 13, 2014

You need proper video drivers and hardware that can do openGL, which you don’t seem to have.

      • Rik May 13, 2014

thanks kib that could be the problem

  • Azael May 13, 2014

    Error subtitles

  • MasterPhW May 13, 2014

Sadly the bug with the XBMC background process, which clears the list in ALL launcher addons is still happenig, please fix it before 13.1 final, it is happenig since the first few Gotham Alpha releases and really getting on my nerves, when using XBMC for more, than “just” media… http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/15105

  • Iceeman May 13, 2014

When playing from iPad via Airplay to XBMC the volume is something like -33 dB

  • Kan May 13, 2014

Downloading subtittles it adds at the end of each file the country 2 character code, e.g. EN, GR and etc..
It would be nice to have the option to turn it off and name the subtittles filenames without the 2 character country code.

  • soliter26 May 13, 2014

Hi XBMC guys. Let me give you couple of comments for you beautiful software.
    1. After fresh installation gotham 13.0 or 13.1 everything works very well on WIN 8 except live TV channel time switching – 24 seconds. BUT…, if I connect my DVBviewer to XBMC just with UPNP (in menu: videos-files-add video-search-upnp devices-dvbviewer media server), it works very fast. Just it is not that comfortable like with the PVR addon. From this is clearly visible, that the problem is caused by the PVR addon. Can somebody please answer, if there is a chance to improve the time?

    • Jasper May 13, 2014

Try googling for: margro xbmc scintilla pvr download
Those builds fixed my argustv switching delays.

      • soliter26 May 16, 2014

Thanks man, it works now much better. The time to switch a channel takes now “just” 11 seconds which is still not acceptable but definitely much better. The time switching in DVB viewer itself is around 2 seconds. It means there is still space for improvement.
And I did not mention my problems on android.

        • De Kraker May 16, 2014

I’m using MePo TV server as a backend and reduced times to 1-4 sec.
Next to margro’s build, try using a dedicated HDD for live TV (e.g. Timeshift buffer and recordings), this ialso mproves switching speed.

          • soliter26 May 17, 2014

Strange, because I do it normally, have got one HDD for the system – win 8 – and second one for the recordings and time shift folder. It means I c´have no comparation.

  • pascal May 13, 2014

I always use the marge builds. But wonder why this is still not in the normal xbmc builds

    • Jasper May 13, 2014

      Yup. Me too.

  • Bill Schu8lze May 13, 2014

I was wondering if anyone has published a netflix add-on yet for v13…that is the only thing that is preventing me from having XBMC take the place of my blu-ray player.

    Thanks

  • Artur May 13, 2014

Please enable Opus audio and H265 video! thanks :)

    • kib May 15, 2014

H265 will be in v14 Helix, it is already available in nightly builds.
Cpu decoding of course, there is no hardware decoding possible yet.

  • Joe Correia May 14, 2014

HD Movies freezes at 10 minutes but sound keeps going?
Is there a fix out there.
This happens on x7,x7 mini, samsung s5 , samsung tab pro.

  • rmcrys May 14, 2014

The WINDOWS version takes forever to load (compatible) skins.

With 12.3 skins were loaded much much faster, and now, after the 13.0 logo, it takes good 20-30 seconds to come the menu! (before 2-3 seconds)

    • kib May 14, 2014

This completely means there is an issue with your install.
No such delays exist on our test systems, so please take this to the forums and be sure to include a debug log !

  • Meno May 14, 2014

    than ever before

  • Roy May 14, 2014

I want to go on the forum and post my audio problem…now the problem is I registered myself but the problem is that I don’t get any activation code…I’ve tried 3 times to send the activation code but no luck :-( looked in all my inboxes

  • Jack Elliott May 14, 2014

Hats off to the entire team who is working on this project. There are many paid software out there that doesn’t come close to the quality and the complexity of XBMC.

I think feature-wise, every new major version is bringing a ton of new features which are more than welcome. However, I believe the team should focus its efforts on 13.5 rather than 14 from now on and spend a considerable amount of time on optimising the software across all platforms, particularly the ones with low specs such as Apple TV or Raspberry Pi. The networking again can also be improved. I’m sure the community will appreciate a slight pause in the development cycle and be happy to see XBMC getting more stable for future versions.

    • soliter26 May 15, 2014

Absolutely agree. I love XBMC and the developers are heroes, but there are tooooo many problems. We have a saying in Czech – less could be more.

      • Martijn May 15, 2014

We have one as well: “The watchers always know better than the doers”

        • soliter26 May 16, 2014

Hi Martin, please do not misunderstand me, I do not criticize anything or anybody. I just read the discussion and facts are facts. Without speaking about the problems there is no chance to improve anything. Anyway, I still consider XBMC as the best multimedia center in the world, and this is a fact as well. Regards from Czech.

    • kib May 16, 2014

I had the distinct feeling that optimizing on all platforms is exactly what was done between 12 and 13.

Of course this will continue to be done for XBMC 14, but it is not a main feature that would exclude other developments.

  • knoodle May 15, 2014

After quitting XBMC, the UI of my Nexus 7 (2013, KitKat), becomes noticeably laggy. Not sure why as background processes are not an issue, nor is memory usage. Otherwise, a lovely piece of software.

  • b79 May 15, 2014

after upgrade to gotham from frodo doesnt work setup for start screen, i’m set start screen to TV PVR, and with frodo it works, but with gotham dosent work :/. it always start on main start screen Sad

  • Sumpy May 15, 2014

    Hi there,
Does anyone know if the ‘Intel-NVidia’ version of XBMCbuntu be released soon?
    Cheers.

    • fritsch May 15, 2014

There is only one version. That works on nvidia, intel, amd – use that one.

  • Olix May 15, 2014

No more subtitles in 13.1 ?

  • zebraitis May 15, 2014

Yes, I know, I know… Tell it to the forums.

But just an FYI: “Export Video Library” seems to not work. It starts and then aborts quickly.

(win 7 64, 13.1 beta, MySQL, writing to a shared win7 drives on server)

  • whatbuddy May 15, 2014

    Your are the best !!!!!!

  • Alan May 16, 2014

Hi Team XBMC. Just dropping a line to say thank you for your awesomeness. XBMC just seems to get better and and better. Just love it. Big thumbs up from me. Using Windows, Linux , openelec and Android versions.

  • john May 16, 2014

i have several issues with xbmc gotham 13 for android

the video overlay doesnt work properly for pixel ratio and defaults upside
    down

it would be nice to be able to minimize xbmc when playing music and still
    have the music play.

it would nice to be able to change the default directory as xbmc takes up
a huge amount of space on the sd card to switch it to use external
    card.

it would be nice to be able to multi select when adding directory .zip
files for repositories and addons using things like mashups online website
    and fusion,etc.

downloading for both pc and android needs to be simplified and
automatic, downloads usualy crash and are incomplete.

otherwise cheers for a great product.

  • Mr Flashie Screen May 17, 2014

OS X 1080i Mac mini to projector all I get is flashing between static (black and white ants) and occasionally XBMC appears. has been a prob ever since OS X Mavericks.
    I miss XBMC very much!

  • Rich May 17, 2014

Awesome product in general guys, but a big mistake to drop support for XP. 26% of all PC’s still running this OS, 37% of all home PC’s. Excellent way to lose a lot of loyal users.

    • Martijn May 17, 2014

We are glad we got rid of XP. Besides there are far better ways for using XBMC. Also the XP share of XBMC users was near negligible

    • Chris May 17, 2014

Wait, so if I install Gotham on my ATV2, I won’t be able to stream movies from my XP net top PC’s SMB share anymore? If so, wow, thanks for the heads up on that one!

      • Martijn May 18, 2014

        yes you will be able.

  • SikSlayer May 17, 2014

Since this release was just bug fixes, maybe it should have been vetted a little better and released as 13.1. But I guess it was more important to get fixes out.

The question now becomes, will there be an official 13.1 release with possibly more bug fixes?

For all who have problems with dvbviewer channel switch time with time shift allowed: I found out new version of dvbviewer pvr.addon 1.9.15 and it works very well. It is possible to download from this page: https://manuel.mausz.at/coding/xbmc/1.9.15/
Ir is even possible to set uo the addon for series recording – enjoy! In my system win 8 the time switching takes around 5 seconds and this is acceptable.

  • Tom May 18, 2014

It this better than the OS that comes with the SkyStreamX boxes? It works fine with apps however the XBMC addons constantly error. We have new Ethernet cables and a new Netgear R6100 router connected to our high speed Clear Internet modem. Our phones and our PC fly without buffering so we assume that the OS might be the problem and we are looking to improve our “cut the cable” TV experience.

  • Magicpuffs561 Jun 05, 2014

I delete older version of xbmc and install new version 13.1 Gotham, everything works fine but I could not install AJ addon to watch TV on Desi-zone,
Is any on know how to install TV ON Desi-zone?

  • Steve-O Jun 29, 2014

Gotham 13.1 on my Ouya gives me a ton of HD files with the “10 minute” video glitch. Vid stops and rainbows while the audio continues. Something wonky with hardware acceleration?

Take your support questions to the forums please, the blog is the wrong place for this.

About XBMC

XBMC is a free and open source media player application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. XBMC is available for multiple operating-systems and hardware platforms, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.
