xbmc-eden-announce-2-650-1

It’s been over a year in the works and today we are excited to announce that XBMC 11.0 is finally ready and available for download. You can find XBMC 11.0 here.

XBMC 11.0 Milestones include Addon Rollbacks, vast improvements in Confluence (the default skin), massive speed increases via features like Dirty-region rendering and the new JPEG decoder, a simpler, better library, movie set scraping, additional protocol handling, better networking support, better handling of unencrypted BluRay content and structures, adjustable display refresh rate in OSX (to match the already available feature in Windows and Linux), AirPlay support, an upgraded weather service with geoip lookup, and much, much more. Check out the highlights in the summarized changelog.

XBMC Eden

The new Confluence

In addition to our many software improvements, we’ve increased our reach in the realm of hardware support since Dharma was released. Eden marks the first in-sync stable release for the Apple TV2iPad, and other iOS devices. We’ve vastly improved the method by which we handle input, including heavily upgrading JSON-RPC support, making remote control support much, MUCH simpler in Windows, and enabling unique methods of device communication with hardware. And now even AMD devices are supported for GPU video decoding in Linux to some extent, thanks to the inclusion of VAAPI.

Beyond XBMC 11 for Windows, Linux, OSX, and iOS, we are also happy to announce XBMCbuntu Final.

XBMCbuntu is very similar to past versions of XBMC Live. By default, the user boots directly into XBMC, and if he/she chooses, he or she will never see the underlying OS. However, unlike Live, XBMCbuntu is now built upon a full LXDE desktop environment, which has a web browser (Chromium) with a fully updated (and updatable) version of Flash built-in and a GUI package manager ready to install and update all of the normal Ubuntu programs a typical Linux user might use. The user may now toggle between XBMC, which auto-starts, and a normal desktop if he or she chooses. And, perhaps most exciting for many users, XBMC will now be upgradeable, both from command line and from the GUI package manager, without fear of crashing the XBMC experience.

Naturally, those users who do not want to see the desktop will never need to. When you boot your computer, you will be booted directly into the XBMC homescreen, just as you are right now. The only clear difference is the new power underneath the hood. Those users who have already installed the Beta version of XBMCbuntu can upgrade to final using the apt-get upgrade commands.

There are truly an incredible number of updates and improvements between Dharma and Eden. But don’t take our word for it. Download XBMC 11.0 Eden now.

  • Nathan Mar 24, 2012

This is both excellent, and annoying.
Excellent, because it’s been released. Awesome work!
Annoying, because I was literally 10 minutes from finishing the RC3 XBMCbuntu iso. :-) Good timing!

  • Perentaart Mar 24, 2012

  • Martijn Mar 24, 2012

HD sound has not been included.

  • Willem Mar 24, 2012

Thank you very very much, i’ve been waiting for a while and now it’s finally here. Keep up the good work :-) :-) :-)

  • b3rn Mar 24, 2012

what am still missing is the minimize option in the shutdown menu. was very useful to me untill it was removed. Partneships with hardware manufactures for small footprint hardware disigned for xbmc? Otherwise this is the greatest version ever from the greatest media centre

  • seba Mar 24, 2012

Even more than I wish you congratulations, I want to thank you.
It’s just absurd this is all done by volunteers, this is the finest example of a successful open source project, as it is the best in what it does. Without xbmc, home cinema would never be as good as it is today.

  • 2green Mar 24, 2012

So this thing should be EVEN MORE SOLID than the beta 1 I’m running?

Thanks Guys! (but the beta was already to goooooooood).

  • Kenjamin Mar 24, 2012

Massive thanks…. appreciation to everyone who puts work into this.

  • Sooty Mar 24, 2012

Excellent…..just need PVR and xbmc will be the all encompassing, dominant media centre. Well done guys!!

  • JiSiN Mar 24, 2012

    Awesome!!!

  • Jeremy R Mar 24, 2012

Good work everyone involved! Upgraded and running!

  • apps Mar 24, 2012

I really love using xbmc and the new version is so good.
    Thanks a lot!

  • Ian Mar 24, 2012

YOU GUYS ARE MY FUCKING HEROES!!

  • James Mar 24, 2012

Awesome…. now all that is needed is a way to get it onto an Apple TV3

  • John Mar 24, 2012

Looking forward to this. But please provide checksums so that we may confirm that the ISO and other files downloaded without error.

  • Sonic Mar 24, 2012

Wow! Thnx for all your hard work team xbmc! This was worth waiting for :-)

  • Heilage Mar 24, 2012

Three minutes after the install was done, I was playing the first video, everything working just fine as far as I can tell (XBMCbuntu).

Just had to switch audio settings and add folders. I’m impressed. :)

  • Lukas Mar 24, 2012

Awesome. I am waiting for so long! It’s gonna be a long night :)
    Nice job!

  • jgslima Mar 24, 2012

    Great job, congrats guys!

  • JohnD Mar 24, 2012

    Great job! Thanks!! :)

  • drz Mar 24, 2012

Anyway this version will run bluray isos? I like running the iso’s and have temporarily switched over to WMC and I hate it!!

  • nedscott Mar 24, 2012
  • dansal Mar 24, 2012

    Great work!

    Great!

  • Will Mar 24, 2012

Exciting. So what’s the process for updating?

  • BvZ Mar 24, 2012

    Epic. Great Job guys!

  • nedscott Mar 24, 2012

    @Will
Just replace the old copy of XBMC with the new copy. Userdata is stored elsewhere, so it won’t be erased. If you use MySQL DB sharing then you should see this page: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW-TO:Sync_multiple_libraries/Upgrading_XBMC_from_v10_to_v11

  • Sarim Mar 24, 2012

    Congrats guys! Thanks!

  • NineT9 Mar 24, 2012

    yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa thanks!!

  • Oyjord Mar 24, 2012

I’m using Windows Media Center now and would like to replace it with XBMC. But IIRC XBMC doesn’t have DVR/TV tuner capabilities. Any chance this has been added in this new build? Thanks all the same!

    • nedscott Mar 24, 2012

      @Oyjord
Will hopefully be apart of the next release. Check out the XBMC forums for unofficial builds that have PVR/DVR support in them from the PVR branch.

  • bossanova808 Mar 24, 2012

    Congratulations on another milestone folks!

  • Oyjord Mar 24, 2012

    Thanks, nedscott, will do!

  • Frank Costanza Mar 24, 2012

How about fixing some of the many bugs reported already before a proper release?

    • nedscott Mar 25, 2012

      @Frank Costanza
Because there were no outstanding major issues, some bugs are too rare to justify further delay, and some things can only be fixed via work that wasn’t ready for v11 (for example, a lot of audio features will be improved with Audio Engine, but it wasn’t ready in time for v11). Some bugs are apart of libraries that we don’t have direct control over and must be updated elsewhere on the food chain. Some bugs come from “moving targets” such as RTMP (getting flash streams to work in add-ons). The list goes on. It’s literally impossible to wait until we’re “bug free”, because in that time some standard or website or something will change and make something else break.

We also can’t fix bugs we don’t know about. Bug reports need to be made on Trac and/or the forums, and with the necessary info for our devs to be able to work on them.

  • Walt Mar 24, 2012

I read page 1 of website.
I still don’t know what it actually is…

other than faster and more features …

    does it churn butter ?
    clean window sills ?
    a new car ?

like most tech websites, lots of hype, I’m still in dark.

    • nedscott Mar 25, 2012

      @Walt
Might want to check out that big “ABOUT” link at the top of the page that leads to “What is XBMC?”

  • wilson.joe Mar 25, 2012

just keeps getting better. shh told tell anyone, but it makes me feel a bit mushy inside.. :D
thanks everyone for all your hard work and dedication..

  • hiccupatron Mar 25, 2012

@Walt Seriously dude, spend one second googling it. Are you 85?

  • nomasteryoda Mar 25, 2012

To answer Walt’s comment in a gentle tone, the “About” button has a nice “What is XBMC?” choice containing a descriptive page and has the important bits… This first page is announcing the glory of the Gold status of version 11. Let it be what it is and enjoy. The developers worked tirelessly to get this out and they deserve a round of applause and our thanks.

  • Feng Mar 25, 2012

    Good New!
XMBC is my favorite media center!!!

  • Tass Mar 25, 2012

    Bring back Project Mayhem III!

  • Phil Mar 25, 2012

    @Walt

So between the big picture of the theater, with the words “pictures” “video” and “music” in it and the words “movie set scraping” and “handling of unencrypted BluRay content” in the text you REALLY couldn’t figure out that it’s an htpc system?

How about the great big ABOUT button on the upper left of the page, was that too obvious for you?

Perhaps you are just one of the very very few that shouldn’t actually be using a computer.

  • Exrace Mar 25, 2012

Just in time for my fresh build!
    Thanks Dev team!

  • jose Mar 25, 2012

    Guys,
Can I use this on an Android platform? like on iMX53 or OMAPs?

  • Lloyd Mar 25, 2012

Nice work! Have been lpoking forward to this release. You’ve really outdone yourselves this time guys! Congratulations on a truly awesome piece of software.

  • tacoguy Mar 25, 2012

    congrats!

  • Stuart Mar 25, 2012

Has CEC Support been added to this build?

  • Sam Mar 25, 2012

    Try the About Page… @Walt

  • Jeff Mar 25, 2012

    woot! good job team-xbmc. :)

  • Uxorious Mar 25, 2012

Wonderful with a new release, but thinking about reverting already!

Biggest problem … it’s locked up 3 times in 1 hour now … last time was when I hit “Play” on a video. It didn’t start playing, and after a few keypresses, I see the main menu bar, with all the video UI sitting just above it.

Another huge problem is the “audio track selection” logic that has been changed.
Now, XBMC tries to intelligently pick the best audio track … only it’s not very intelligent.
I have a ton of files with a 5.1 AAC track first, followed by foreign language AC3 tracks … and now it always defaults to play the AC3 track!
It ignores the fact that the AAC track has the same number of channels, and it completely ignores the language tag in the tracks (MP4).

    • nedscott Mar 25, 2012

      @Uxorious

Make a post in the XBMC support forums and we’ll figure out what’s going wrong.

  • Bjorn Mar 25, 2012

Thanks for this! Time to upgrade :) will go for the XBMCbuntu release, exited!

  • Bjorn Mar 25, 2012

  • Carlos Mar 25, 2012

Thank you for your fantastic work. Congratulations!

  • flyingV Mar 25, 2012

Yes Nedscott – thanks for the reply. I run apt-get update as usual and get a 404 error when downloading some packages and then the write error. Already jailbroken running beta 3.

    @nedscott

  • Andrea Mar 25, 2012

FANTASTIC! Thanks to all developers for their hard work!
    Now i’m waiting for this: http://www.scintilla.utwente.nl/~marcelg/xbmc/prebuild.html ;-P

  • Joe Mar 25, 2012

The new build freezes after about 30 seconds and I have to restart. Any ideas?

  • Sander Mar 25, 2012

Lady and gents developers: thank you for your hard work. XBMC was and, with this release, will continue to be the best media player available. Keep it up!

  • chtamina Mar 25, 2012

    can I use chromium on ATV2 ?

  • raffoul Mar 25, 2012

Thanks for your great media center. That’s a pleasure to use it every day on windows, linux, and ipad. Beautiful, useful, fast, …
    Thank you again.

And now, an official TV addon for XBMC master ? :) With IPTV please and rtsp support :)

    Raphaël
    A french user

  • Pete Mar 25, 2012

Fantastic work as always been with XBMC since the Xbox and XBMP.

Don’t use Linux much but recently put XBMCbuntu on my media center as I think the experience is best. Just to check what are the exact steps for an upgrade is it just sudo apt-get upgrade? Not scared of the command line just don’t know the steps or is using the package manager easier.

  • Me Mar 25, 2012

Awesome – Thanks to everyone who made this possible

  • neofreko Mar 25, 2012

    I’m blown away! It’s a revelation! :D

I’m still having issue with unicode char tho. It’s still displayed as boxes. Any clues?

  • rrr Mar 25, 2012

I need a replacement for Boxee (for windows). Last time I tried XBMC, it didn’t have much in the way of online content. 99.9% of what I watch is web based like ABC.COM, Netflix, etc. Does this integrate those nicely yet along with a search/guide for content? I don’t see this mentioned at all in XBMC>About

  • Richy Freeway Mar 25, 2012

That’s what I did pete but it’s only taken me to a March 17th build. Was originally on whatever release XBMCBuntu RC3 was.

  • JaccoH Mar 25, 2012

    Stuart :
Has CEC Support been added to this build?

Yes. However the XBMC version of pulse-eight should have more support (eg AVR support).

  • yoda Mar 25, 2012

Yeah finally!! XBMC is just the best media center :)

  • Taylor Mar 25, 2012

Thats nice to have, but whenever I install any Eden release, my movie library disappears. I had to get back to dharma.

Is there any way to preserve my movie library while upgrading to Eden?

  • nbjyo Mar 25, 2012

Has anyone else noticed the 24p (24Hz) playback mode is broken in the release version? Which was fine in the RC1 & RC2.

  • Ginie Mar 25, 2012

very nice. Thank you all so much.
Poor Walt, maybe some day he will notice the “about” menu.

  • Jerome Mar 25, 2012

I’ve just migrated from the previous stable version with … no problem.
    Just great improvements !
Congratulations to all the team !

  • Boby Mar 25, 2012

I’ve read the comments and reviews attentively. Can’t wait to install it.
On that note, does anyone know when Eden will be available in the RPM Fusion repo?

  • farr3ll Mar 25, 2012

    Bless Walts cotton socks!

A big thank you to Team XBMC for this long awaited release.. looking forward to things to come..

    Q. Does XBMC sell merchandise i.e. t-shirts, mugs etc? If not, PM me to discuss.

  • kr16 Mar 25, 2012

    Congrats !!!

It should be preserved automatically. Post a message on the XBMC support forums and we’ll figure out why it’s not working for ya.

  • nedscott Mar 25, 2012

    Tass :

    Bring back Project Mayhem III!

PM3.HD was updated for Eden. It’s in the official add-on repo under Skins.

re: What is the product ?

I’ve spent years using linux and other apps.
Developers can get really removed from the reality
of their products. I don’t spend a lot of time in “media”.
I do other stuff. So if you’re interested in marketing only to
guys that already have 4 media players on their boxes,
    have at it !

I no longer visit web pages of most tech product sites.
I can’t afford to take the time and play “which 10 clicks can
get me the info I need”. Or how far on this 30 page long
front page do I have to scroll to find something.
I go and ask people what they’re using and why. And I ignore
all but the product sites troubleshooting web pages.

Good writing/design demands that the product description be placed
first so that the consumer is wanting to know more. The front page
doesn’t do that for me, and every “about” page has something different
    or nothing.

There are two or three paragraphs in the “about” that should be
first and foremost on the front page, FOLLOWED by the new product
    announcement/revision/upgrade. Or headlined in maybe a 2nd-column
at the top. So, yes, the “about” has good
information — in the wrong place.

Could I assume you are competing with, say, mplayer and vlc player ?
Or did I miss some other aspect of the product ? (I setup a NAT
and stream anything between my various linux boxes…)

I’m certainly glad that so many people are excited about the
product, and the capabilities. The pictures are nice, although for
me the theatre could be an opera house. The top green image could be
TV sets. If first set in context, their purpose would be clear.
But, ya’ll are young, ( am I wrong here ??) and the comment will
    be ignored.

I understand. And I salute the new product release. I know the feeling
of new product out the door !
Congrats… ( you’ll note I separate the product from the web page ).

Thanks – I was getting write errors saying disc full – so deleted some addon backups using this

All working now and iPlayer works too – cool.

  • KingLouie Mar 25, 2012

Download link to Windows version doesn’t work! :(

  • Zebraitis Mar 25, 2012

    Yep… A +1 on the release.

Thank you all for the diligence and dedication it takes to do this, coming from a LONG time user, from back in the XBOX days.

However, now as a Win7 64 user, I must ask: “What the hell, man !!?!?”

The new directory structure threw me for a loop there….

Why the choice to go with c:\Program Files (x86)\Windows NT\XBMC ?

Is that a nod to ancient history or something, by including XBMC in the Windows NT subdirectory?

    Inquiring minds…

Other than that, thanks VERY much !!!

(… I just loaded BluRay capability via MakeMKV and the BluRay Plugin. Nice!)

  • bleh Mar 25, 2012

    @Walt from the About page:

    1) XBMC won awards
    2) software media player
    3) available for Linux, OSX, and Windows
    4) Created by more then 50 programmers for free in 30 languages
    5) perfect companion for your HTPC that supports remote controls
    6) plays media like a multimedia jukebox.
    7) It is difficult to put into words all that XBMC can do

It is just a media player… like MPlayer.. but with a different name…

  • Jon Mar 25, 2012

Xbox 360 wireless game controller isn’t working on fresh install :(

XBMCbuntu I’m getting small text on install ? Why is this happening on the final build ?

  • Philippe Roth Mar 25, 2012

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I Love XBMC!! You are the BESTS!!!

    Cheers from Sweetzerland ;o)

  • Pete Ashdown Mar 25, 2012

    @Taylor

If you’re using mysql for your database backend, you have to grant access for it to create a new upgraded database:

I’m getting small text on install and I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING. This was an issue on one of the other beta builds why is this still an issue ?

  • digzz Mar 25, 2012

This is on the XBMCbuntu build

  • nayr Mar 25, 2012

I tried to update, wouldn’t load up. Now I get 15:16:49 T:8116 ERROR: CRemoteControl::Connect – failed to connect in my log. What do I do.

  • Kotori Mar 25, 2012

    @Anonymous
Normal issue, try installing with set 120dpi mode.

  • Sven Mar 25, 2012

Really stoked about the new stuff. Anyone know of a good Walk Through guide\Video to the main new features?

  • Nick Mar 25, 2012

Can anyone share the md5 hashes of the downloads? I’m not sure on my xbmcbuntu download… opens in winrar without error… but I don’t want to waste XBMC bandwidth and download it again!

  • Lrrosa Mar 25, 2012

I’ve made a torrent for XBMCbuntu Final: http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/7131387
Those who already downloaded it can help seeding.

  • Demos v Mar 25, 2012

Looks like I’ll be staying with Dharma. Eden has added nothing significant for windows users, but has broken plenty. setting refresh to match video does nothing which results in very noticeable stuttering on all video, “-d xx” no longer works for delayed startup(results in freeze on splash), video lag inconsistent with all framerates….just to name a couple.
I do appreciate the hard work for this free software and a fan of XBMC, but not another blind cheerleader.

  • anon Mar 25, 2012

kudos to all people that are/were involved into this project… :3

Great job as usual. But I must say I miss the old Dharma Live that I ran from my USBstick. Now when I run XBMCbuntu from the same stick the menues are slower, it completely locks up on me sometimes. For the future it would be nice with a “regular” Live release once again :P

  • KingLouie Mar 25, 2012

    @KingLouie
    Its working now! :)

  • nedscott Mar 25, 2012

    @Demos v
We have tons of Windows users who’ve been using the Betas and who have already used the final version, as well as a bunch of Windows devs. They’re not having any issues like that at all. Sounds like your setup is bonked somehow. Post about this on the XBMC forums and we’ll get it straighten out. There’s a ton of great improvements in v11, and it’s harder to upgrade when you have to jump two version numbers (if you’re just waiting for v12).

  • Frank (NL) Mar 25, 2012

    @Demos v

I have the exact same video issues since RC1. Stuttering, lag etc. Especially when playing content from my server.
    Going back to Dharma also.

  • DDDamian Mar 26, 2012

@demos & Frank – I’m running 2 Win7 boxes flawlessly, no stutters, smooth fluid playback. And yes, for Windows users there’s an unofficial patch for bitstreaming DTS-MA/TrueHD. I’m getting pretty much the Holy Grail of HTPC, and look forward to the rollout of some of the upcoming features like the FFMPeg update, AE, thumbnails in the texture db, etc.

I think you’ll find your issues addressed in the forums, as well as info on what hardware works well and what doesn’t. Eden has so many improvements over Dharma – you’re missing out.

    Walt :
re: What is the product ?

I’m already working on a new website, more focused on the average joe and not techies, which will have everything you mentioned – thus having a summary of the features on the home page and so on. There is already a first draft, but time is limited atm, so it might take a while until it’s finished.

I’m trying to install the XBMCUbuntu but I get the following error:
“no default or ui configuration directive found!”
    boot:

    How to fix this please?

  • johnnyrio Mar 26, 2012

Used to using a 360 wireless controller on Dharma, and even after the controller would shut itself off, I could hit the “home” button, it would communicate with receiver and then let me control XBMC again. This feature is no longer working in Eden :( When the controller shuts off while watching a movie, if I restart it after a few minutes it’ll be recognized by XBMC and let me control things, but if I wait lets say 30 minutes or more and restart the controller, I can’t control anything in XBMC. Obviously there’s a time limit for communicating with Eden via the wireless controller. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

  • jonson Mar 26, 2012

First.. nice Work, big Thanks to the Team. Eden looks good and its very fast on my Zotac Zbox.
I´ve used openelec the last half year i thought about take a look on xbmcbuntu again. Sorry to say that the same old Bug still exists like in the old xbmc life versions. I talk about SMB Shares. I got all my Media Sources on a ASUS NAS with WHS. I access this NAS from PC,Tablet,Boxee without trouble. The NAS is connected over Gbit Lan with XBMC.
So, when i try to add a Source, i put the Share user and Password in the dialog Box from Xbmc. Click on OK and nothing happend. I am Back on the same Window without Password set. I think its the same old story that xbmc has no enough rights to mount this share no matter what i type in the user pw field. I will try to manual alter sources.xml and try this out, but thats not how it should work. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction ? Thanks

  • johnnyrio Mar 26, 2012

Figured out the controller issue! You can’t have a usb mouse enabled when the controller turns off otherwise XBMC defaults to the mouse and disregards the controller. Just disable the mouse in the INPUT settings and the controller can turn off and on and still communicate with XBMC no problem.

Thanks guys! Shared database upgrade did not go smoothly during upgrade (I ended up deciding to drop the DBs) from Dharma but I’d exported DB so it wasn’t too much hassle to re-import. Note to those in same situation: remember to edit your advancedsettings.xml to add true to videolibrary section.

    Hi,
Is it possible to load XBMC on a Toshiba STROR.E TV+?
The device is controllable by a remote control only, and features FE and WiFi-N connections, 2 USB ports (one of them used with the WiFi dongle), digital & analog audio, analog video as well as HDMI port, a SD/MS card reader and a small LCD display for basic info / browsing path.
The original Toshiba software is kinda lame, so this would really make it work like a real media player :) .
    Thanks.

New confluence is very poor aesthetically. The layout and visual balance of various views is all wrong, the tacky green/blue res flags, the crap XBMC logo on a dull grey bar on the bottom. Even the horizontal menu has problems, when you are on ‘Movies’ and press down to go to the sub-bar, it should go to the middle item instead of the left one.

Ergonomically and aesthetically it is just a disaster.

EDEN 11.0, Fantastic! I just love XBMC as a media player! My highest praise goes to all you fine programmers who make this free software. I have been using XBMC for about a year, I have never had any problems installing and running XBMC, never lost any media. I’ve done upgrade installs, clean installs, and XBMC just works. I have developed some favourite settings. I absolutetly love Transparency skin. My only problem with it is I can’t keep up with gathering all the “EYE CANDY” fanart for all the new movies and TV series I download. If I did, I’d have no time to watch them! Too much candy, too little time! “Weather Plus” is my favourite weather addon. It is very informative, weather map and all.

I download tonight’s TV series tomorrow and watch it tomorrow night – without commercials! Now that beats OTA TV, Sat TV, Cable TV hands down! Movies are downloaded or rented & MKV’ed to the hard drive. They are a pleasure to watch, pause for a snack break or pit stop break, then continue watching without missing a frame. You XBMC programmers have made my retirement like heaven.

So, THANKS AGAIN FOR SUCH A FINE MEDIA PLAYER!

I would first like to thank everyone involved in the project XBMCBUNTU, I think very important we exchange information and experiences, that is how the project evolved and matured. always easier to lay more. I would like to take these people to ask relevant, add an audio in the GUI configurator. and much as it would help people, wireless configurator, configurator bluetooth. have control of the pulse-and eight-pump adapter or USB could not support them XBMCBUNTU the original installation, I had to install over the version xbmcfreak and then pulse-eight PVR version. I think that is very easy for you guys add this in XBMCBUNTU. Once again thank you for the attention of all.
Let the best program he is very good ..
    Thank you ..

  • Anon Mar 29, 2012

This is an awesome release. After using it for a bit, I can tell a lot went under the hood. XBMC is so much more smoother and quicker compared to previous builds. Great work guys.

  • Matt Mar 29, 2012

Just tried to run XbmcBuntu on my old 2.53 P4 and its useless. It looks real pretty but it takes at least dual core i’m assuming. I’m not ready to build another PC, I don’t really like many games after ’04 so this one is perfect. It handles XP and Linux Mint and 1Tb worth of music and video without hiccup. But who knows I might Build A modern Computer. Ill get back if I do.

  • John Trentow Mar 30, 2012

Thank you for all your efforts to make XBMC. It is a very good product. However, the new XBMCbuntu-11.0.iso (linux) seems to be a CPU hog with xbmc.bin constantly over 90%. The previous (ubuntu linux) version sits under 10% CPU on DELL Dimension 4800 using Radeon 9550 AGP card. The new version is over 90% CPU on the same hardware. I am testing XMBC on many older hardware: 2.8G P4, 1G RAM & AGP video cards (not PCIe). I have many of these older motherboards/machines and have tried 11.0 on many video cards nvidia and ATI. The CPU issue with 11.0 seems directly related to the video chipset as it has low CPU on the inbuilt Intel chipset on the DELL 4800. I suspect the X server is involved as I constantly have CPU load issues (on different machines) with different versions of Xorg, KDE and different video chipsets on many different releases of Linux (Ubuntu.Slackware etc). It is often a case of swapping VGA cards until a compatible one is found where the CPU is reasonable. So your distribution is not the only one with this problem at all. I even had to resort to proprietory nvidia drivers on one Linux installation. At this stage, I could not find any AGP cards (I have many) that would lower the load of the new XBMC release. I also encountered the “page flip” problem (using the Intel VGA chipset) where rsyslogd started violently filling the logs and eating lots of CPU. However I found a fix (~./drirc file) for that one. This is just an informational post as I am very happy with the old version. Thank you.

What can I say. XBMC is one of those applications that change daily life for the better. Wanted to do a shoutout to the devs, amazing work!!

In regards to Eden, I upgraded from Dharma to Eden without issues, I did loose my custom main menu entries, but had them back in in no time. Eden seems to run much faster, seems less bloaty to me! Now running with the new Aeon MQ3 skin. Totally loving it.

Running Eden, and upgrading my Catalyst drivers also seems to have fixed flickering problem I had with Hardware Accelaration (DXVA2) in Dharma.

    Thanks Devs!!

Matt, seems more like a missing graphics driver. I’m running XBMC on Win7 on a single-core AMD Sempron 2,5 GHz with onboard AIT graphics, so your hardware should be fine. Try either to install XBMCbuntu and install the linux drivers for your graphics card or give it a shoot on Windows if you’re playing games on this PC anyway.

*EDIT – By adding the server by IP manually, I was able to get the folders to show up, but it would not pick up any of the contents, so, empty library. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

just had to say that I am very happy about this new release! Also, having bopped the Media Center scene, Mediabrowser, Mediaportal, even Qvivo had 5 minutes on my system, I always find myself back at XBMC. And with the recent discovery about the dual audio patch, I don’t think I will ever be able to bring myself to try anything else ever again, for me that patch is the holy grail!!!

  • Nesoxy Apr 02, 2012

You forgot to say “in my opinion”, as most here do not think the same as you, I for one would dump xbmc in a second if it started to take a tack like MS is doing with Windows8 for instance. Call it balanced, call it simplified, call it whatever helps you sleep at night….it’s a design disaster, and does nothing but show off how lazy some designers really are.

The other things you mention can all be controlled via xml, or removed from the skin menu, had you taken the time to do this, maybe you would have had less to whine about.

    Demos v :
Looks like I’ll be staying with Dharma. Eden has added nothing significant for windows users, but has broken plenty. setting refresh to match video does nothing which results in very noticeable stuttering on all video, “-d xx” no longer works for delayed startup(results in freeze on splash), video lag inconsistent with all framerates….just to name a couple.
I do appreciate the hard work for this free software and a fan of XBMC, but not another blind cheerleader.

I would like to apologize to the Devs for above comment. After doing full uninstall and cleaning all traces of xbmc, I reinstslled Eden..same results with exception of “-d xx” which now worked. I then uninstalled ATI graphics drivers and went back to older v10e which has always been my go-to drivers for 5770 card…and now all is great, refresh changing and smooth playback. I should of known it was ATI/AMD’s fault.

    Hi,

I upgraded Dharma to Eden without (ubuntu) issues it looks fine however there are 2 problems that just make it useless at my place
the 1st is that I cant choose/change the audio language to play, and I cant disable the subtitles.

I hope you can cast some light here

I have the problem where xbmc (win7) crashes when i skipsteps forward during video playback. Anyone else with the same problem?

  • vaskark Apr 04, 2012

Music from double-CD’s are still not being sorted correctly …

  • JezR Apr 05, 2012

    @DJ

I have this problem. I can skip a few times any more and xbmc crashes.

  • johnnyrio Apr 05, 2012

The previous comments about the wireless 360 controller timing out still haven’t been resolved :( I’m seriously considering going back to Dharma where this problem never presented itself. Sucks because Eden looks great aside from the controller issue.

  • Teresa Apr 05, 2012

    @DJ
    I have the same problem.

  • Jared Apr 05, 2012

I’m excited about Eden, but now i can no longer launch powerdvd when i insert a Blu-ray. My modified playercorefactory.xml file is the same as it was under darma but now does nothing. Anyone have any ideas??

Matt :Just tried to run XbmcBuntu on my old 2.53 P4 and its useless. It looks real pretty but it takes at least dual core i’m assuming. I’m not ready to build another PC, I don’t really like many games after ‘04 so this one is perfect. It handles XP and Linux Mint and 1Tb worth of music and video without hiccup. But who knows I might Build A modern Computer. Ill get back if I do.

    @Matt
I’ve got XBMCbuntu 11.0 running reasonably happily on a 2.66Ghz Pentium with 2G RAM, and an AGP Nvidia 6200A card. Not ideal because it doesn’t like 720p and above, but DVDs and a whole bunch of other content work fine. has to be said that the quality of what I see with XBMCbuntu is soon going to force me to invest in some more modern hardware!

  • Thomas Apr 06, 2012

    @DJ

Having the same issue here. Eden crashes when skipping chapters.

It isn’t consistent but it happens enough that I haven’t upgraded my primary media center from 10.0.

    I’ll also add this -

Runnings Windows 7 Ultimate x64. If it would be helpful to upload a log, feel free to contact me.

  • cyber7 Apr 07, 2012

I am about to post my findings in various publications, as I feel XBMC as HTPC is missing the boat. Let me explain:

    1. XBMCBuntu is slow, clunky and buggy. Against XBMCLive it is not an option for someone who is looking for a stable HTPC.
    2. The “FEATURE” where XBMCBuntu asks for a USERNAME/PASS is a NO-NO!!!
    3. The database can not be copied/pasted from XBMCLive to XBMCBuntu. This is really bad…
    4. The “Watched” flag does not always get honored. Which means you have some stuff not marked.

    AND THE LIST GOES ON!

My Personal opinion: XBMCBuntu is trying to be too smart for itself. A ‘novice’ user does not need the underlying OS, the power-shell or any of that stuff. A novice needs a system that does not boot to a username, is compatible with the previous database and does not need to have a more powerful pc to run a simple HTPC.

As a last point. XBMC needs to be as simple possible and the original LIVE version was so smooth, why fix that was not broken?

@cyber7 You are, of course, also welcome to check out OpenELEC, which is XBMC with much of that underlying OS power stripped out.

    NooNaN :
HELP! – Can’t browse to SMB folder locations to add sources on x64 windows machines where the folders are shared correctly and viewable through any other method. I am running other versions and all have worked fine. Any help here would be appreciated as I’m sure other will have this issue also.
*EDIT – By adding the server by IP manually, I was able to get the folders to show up, but it would not pick up any of the contents, so, empty library. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Guys,

Still having this issue and would really appreciate any help. I tried another install on a machine that has never had XBMC on it and got the same thing. I’m surprised no one else has had this issue. Win 7 x64 Ultimate….can’t browse to SMB network. Drives are definitely shared correctly and not password protected. Added share by IP, but it did not load any of the folder’s contents. All of my movies are in separate folders within each shared drive.

    Thanks!

  • nedscott Apr 07, 2012

    @cyber7
So just use XBMC and don’t touch the desktop part. That’s what happens by default.

I’m not sure why you would have any issues coping the userdata folder from a previous XBMC install to the new one.

    @NooNaN
If you need support help then you need to post on the XBMC forums.

About XBMC

XBMC is a free and open source media player application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. XBMC is available for multiple operating-systems and hardware platforms, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.
