Updated: Possible Unreachable Time Tonight

Posted By: Team XBMC on Dec 29, 2011 in Site News

We will be changing registrars and nameservers for xbmc.org tonight (US time), which could lead to a brief unreachable period (via DNS) while the records propagate around the net. The move will affect this site, the forum, the wiki, trac, our email, and addons in XBMC itself. No action should be required by users or readers. This move away from our current registrar and to a non-US entity is intended as a small provision should the worst come to pass.

We are hoping for a seamless transition and we don’t foresee any difficulties, but don’t be alarmed by any unexpected results for the next day or so. We’ll update this space when the move is complete.

Update: Somehow, these things never go smoothly. The move is complete, but we did see some unreachable time. Most everyone should be back up by now, depending on your DNS servers. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

    Merry X-Mas to you too

  • j114 Dec 24, 2011

    Awesome job devs, thanks for all of your hard work and this awesome product. I know some people wish there was more front end flash with this update, but the amazing amount of backend stuff that you guys have done in this cycle is very impressive.

    Pat yourselves on the back and then get crackin on the next one, because it’s never enough (which will probably be apparent in the comments within the next 24 hours!) :p

  • mad-max Dec 24, 2011

    thanks for this nice Christmas gift…the Devs have again done amazing work…
    Hopefully you all will take some time off next year when the “BEAST” is released…

    Here I am up in the middle of the night trying to get a central SQL database working and look what I see in the RSS feed! Been waiting for this guys, thanks for the early Xmas gift!

  • paavor Dec 24, 2011

    YAY! The best Christmas present ever! Thanks to all developers!

    Now you should really go home, shut down all your computers (except possible media center computes) and take some time to relax. NO MORE CODING OR DEBUGGING UNTIL DEC 26!!!½½

  • Phil Dec 24, 2011

    Nice work guys! A lovely gift for the holidays.

  • il France Dec 24, 2011

    great xmas present! Btw, does Airplay support means xbmc can act as an airplay receiver?

  • Jasper Dec 24, 2011

    Greatest news ever! :)
    Has the way the Beta is installed to Apple TV drastically changed now, will the first stable from Cydia be the newest nightly now? Or do I still have to install the old “stable” and then overwrite it with the newest nightly.

    Superb job guys :D

  • henrava Dec 24, 2011

    Yeah ! Really a X-Mas Gift !
    BIG Thanks to all the devs.

  • Lowe Dec 24, 2011

    @Lowe
    Oke, hi well i fixed the problem if anyone wanna know.
    so just
    go to app “run”, type: %appdata%
    then scroll down to xbmc, and you’ll find a folder Called Userdata, Just rename that to userdatabackup, and DONE

    *WARNING* this will remove all of your movie stuff like posters and info, you can always try do export your library before you do this :) i found an old Export i did so i’m using that one, Good Luck :)

  • PatOso Dec 24, 2011

    Is this safe to try?

    It’s a beta, anyone downloading beta software should know that breakage is not impossible. Anyway, your XBMC database will be irreversably updated, that I do know.

  • BORIStheBLADE Dec 24, 2011

    Can’t wait for Live version. Thanks a lot guys!!

  • Rob Dec 24, 2011

    How can I stream a movie to Apple TV now (in Navi X)

  • voltgaming Dec 24, 2011

    Thanks for the great work XBMC!!

    How do you get the new version? Update on nitoTV?

  • da-anda Dec 24, 2011

    We wouldn’t release it if we wouldn’t think it’s safe. But as Klojum said, it’s still just beta and there might be some glitches. And as stated in the announcement, better make a backup of your database (just in case). I personally use nightly builds (that are even more likely to break anything) since ages and don’t have any issues so far.

  • Craig Dec 24, 2011

    Stupid question, most likely… but is it at all possible for media to be deleted when running this beta? Or are the “risks” not that extreme?

  • Kobi D Dec 24, 2011

    there is no Pvr clients addons ?

  • amet Dec 24, 2011

    @Klojum
    not really, Eden has a mechanism now that will update without destroying your previous version DB.

  • Ned Scott Dec 24, 2011

    @Klojum
    It’s always good to backup, but XBMC v11 should make a copy of your DBs and update those, leaving original copies (both local and MySQL).

  • Szape Dec 24, 2011

    Merry Christmas and thanks for your hard and valuable work!

    JAJAAJAJAJAJA excellent comment@Jeff

  • Matt Dec 24, 2011

    Recording?
    Many kudos to the team who brings us such an awesome release, but my #1 wish has always been seamless support for recording TV.
    I currently run mythtv, boxee and XBMC and switch between them for various requirements.
    Mythtv is currently my biggest bug-bear as the interface is lightyears behind XBMC and BOXEE, yet it’s recording ability is second to none.

    Perhaps next year?
    Or maybe I’m missing something and there’s seamless support for recording

  • Mo Dec 24, 2011

    Merry X-mas!!!
    Does anyone know if there is a way to get this up and running on an Open-Elec install?

  • Yaniv Dec 24, 2011

    Hi, why you didn’t included the live tv in this beta?

  • Dan Dec 24, 2011

    What happened to the Confluence skin?!? Its gone back to the old look instead of the new layout you were using a few months ago. Bring it back please!

  • Bruma Dec 24, 2011

    Tnx :D

  • LLDaLastDon Dec 24, 2011

    Please port to Xbox 360!!!

  • JustinSane Dec 24, 2011

    What do I do if it stays at the splash for ages, then freezes when it’s half loaded the home screen?

  • Kiwiboyus Dec 24, 2011

    Looks awesome! Great work guys you rule!

  • JaccoH Dec 24, 2011

    Nice!

    Question: This PPA does not include libcec. Should I get that seperately?

  • JaccoH Dec 24, 2011

    @JustinSane

    Try looking in the logs and definately backup and move your user folder ~/.xbmc away.

  • JustinSane Dec 24, 2011

    @JustinSane
    k ignore that, righted itself after closing it.

  • dieselboy28 Dec 24, 2011

    Why you no release iOS Eden?

  • jason Dec 24, 2011

    just a heads up. it was freezing for me on launch cause i had old version of the aeon nox skin. i had to manually delete the skin and launch xbmc again for it to work properly. otherwise, looks like a good release! keep up the good work guys!!!

    ATV2/iOS install instructions have been updated on the XBMC wiki: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=IOS_FAQ#Install

    In short, Cydia repo is now the latest version. No more nightlies for Eden.

  • Ned Scott Dec 24, 2011

    @Kobi D
    @Matt
    @Yaniv

    PVR/DVR wasn’t planned for Eden. Check out the forums for test builds that do have PVR features, but there won’t be a “stable” release with these features until Frodo (XBMC v12). If you don’t need to record TV, live TV is already a feature in XBMC ( http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBMC_Online_Manual look under “Media sources”).

    In any case, PVR/DVR in XBMC is just a front end for other software, like MythTV or Tvheadend. XBMC won’t have built-in tuner support. Such built-in support would have to wait for binary add-ons, which is way in the future.

  • Anonymous Dec 24, 2011

    @Yaniv
    Live tv is slated for XBMC Frodo, the next release after this one.

  • Schrn Dec 24, 2011

    Been keeping up with nightlies under Win32 (so I already knew how awesome all these new features are) – but the highlight really is the new iOS version – touch support on iPad is now incredible!
    Hats off to the entire team…

  • Fr0zon Dec 24, 2011

    Well done from South Africa !
    Thank you for providing us with this awesome media center.
    Been using XBMC for over 9 years now and still have it running on my crystal Xbox as well as all my ATv2, Ipad and Zbox
    This is testament to what can be done when people work together and share a passion!
    $100 is its way to you.

  • Japa Dec 24, 2011

    Thank you and Merry Christmas.

  • Ajedi Dec 24, 2011

    Aswome work guys!! Merry Christmas to all of ya!!

  • DedTV Dec 24, 2011

    Craig :
    Stupid question, most likely… but is it at all possible for media to be deleted when running this beta? Or are the “risks” not that extreme?

    How possible it is depends on your setup. For example, the computer I have XBMC on doesn’t have the ability (via permissions) to do anything but read files on my Media storage computer so it’d be impossible for an update, or anything else I do on that computer, to do anything to my media. If your media folders have open permissions, there’s always the possibility it could eat your files. However the chances are pretty low with a standard install. Addons and such which are meant to automatically delete things would raise the chances of something going horribly wrong though.

    Your DB and such though, you should backup as those are a bit more likely to be eaten in an update.

  • JiSiN Dec 24, 2011

    awesome! Eden is cming…
    looking forward for a xbmc eden beta (live) version :)

    Thank you team XBMC. Merry Xmas!

  • Fabian Dec 25, 2011

    I upgraded XBMC to Eden on my Mac Mini (mid 2010) with an NVIDIA 320M running Snow Leopard. When I start a Movie, Trailer or TV show. The framerate is very slow the image stutters :( How can I fix that? Looks like it doesn’t use hardware rendering or something. I am using the exact same settings in 11.0 as in 10.1.

  • Fabian Dec 25, 2011

    @Fabian

    It seems XBMC 11.0 is missing the option Allow Hardware Acceleration (VDADecoder) so i’am back on 10.1

  • Ego Dec 25, 2011

    Anyone else having issues scrapping your library? I uninstalled a nightly (20111210), deleted the profile folder, installed the beta and added my sources (which worked perfect fine in the nightly) and now I get “Unable to connect to remote server” when trying to scrape info. Absolutely zero things have change on the machine since the nightly

  • Erik Dec 25, 2011

    Thank you so much, and Merry Christmas!

    Just a quicky:
    How long is “soon” (as it says on the download page) before the beta gets uploaded to the unstable ppa? Otherwise I just grab it manually :)

  • Kujo Dec 25, 2011

    Eagerly waiting for the XBMC Live version. I can’t wait.

  • Rudolph Dec 25, 2011

    Will there be Eden for Windows? I ran all the nightlies until they stopped, but since there is no beta for win32 I wonder if that platform is scrapped?

  • Rudolph Dec 25, 2011

    @Rudolph
    Ok, you must press Ctril-F5 to refresh the directory listing if you have been there before. Now I see the Eden beta for win32.

  • djb Dec 25, 2011

    Hiya guys, congratulations on the release of beta 1 of Eden! Well done! I’ve been using the nightlies for the last couple of months now, up until the december 10 version, for windows. I’m running this configuration with a MySQL database. With the nightlies, no problems whatsoever, but after installing the beta 1, my library appears to be completely empty, no data sources are available and the log file keeps repeating the same error:

    15:37:25 T:5388 M:2043613184 ERROR: Can’t open the database xbmc_music as it is a NEWER version than what we were expecting!
    15:37:25 T:5388 M:2043367424 ERROR: Can’t open the database xbmc_video as it is a NEWER version than what we were expecting!

    Is there any way I can fix this, without having to rebuild the database? Or is it better to just wipe my MySQL databases (I see XBMC has been pretty busy creating new ones in the last couple of weeks) and start creating the library from scratch? As for the connection details in the advancedsettings.xml I use for the connection to MySQL:

    mysql
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    xbmc_video

    mysql
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    xbmc_music

    Does the name get used? I see a lot of different names now, ranging from mymusic17, to xbmc_music and xbmc_music17 (and counting upwards). Which naming scheme is actually used right now?

    Thanks for all the incredibly hard work you guys have done so far, enjoy your christmas holidays and take some well-deserved rest ;)

  • htpcatv2 Dec 25, 2011

    Eden is the best christmas present evaaaaar!!! thanks devs!!!

  • Sinclair Dec 25, 2011

    Just set up the beta of Eden and wow what a fantastic step forward. However nothing for android (a public license based OS) and more for IOS (a fat cat companies OS). What’s the score guys? Love your stuff but struggling to understand the logic of prioritising expensive OS developments before PL software especialy as XBMC originated from PL roots.

    Fantastic job but development seams to be moving in the wrong diredtion. (Just my opinion)

  • Jean-Luc Dec 25, 2011

    Thank you very much and Merry Christmas to the whole team ! :)

  • bud Dec 25, 2011

    Just got an ATV2 for Christmas. Eden already running fine and smooth. ;)
    thx a lot and Merry Christmas to everyone!!

  • chrisz Dec 25, 2011

    Best version on ATV2. Great!!!!!!! With this version i can play all Formats on my atv2 !!

  • Manu Dec 25, 2011

    Is there a big improvement between this Beta and an early December pre Even Nightly Build? I modified my xmbc and it will be tricky to update…

    p.s. “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” – keep reaching for the stars xbmc team

  • funrob Dec 25, 2011

    Awesome job guys! thanks for the xmas gift. Please update ffmpeg for 10-bit support and other decoding goodness.

  • Ben91 Dec 25, 2011

    @Ego

    Exactly the same problem here !

    “Unable to connect to remote server” error… Internet is working fine, tested yesterday and today.

    I came from Dharma 10.1. Fresh install (deleted settings).

  • ghostface Dec 25, 2011

    Hey guys… Just test the XBMC Eden Beta 1 on my AMD E-350, and it ran pretty slow. Can anyone help me out here… Thanks

  • Indy-Joe Dec 25, 2011

    Someone in the forum said that there is a bug in this Eden Beta. For the scrapper to work you must install the youtube addon. I was having this problem, and installing youtube solved it.

  • Tobias Dec 25, 2011

    Just tetsted the BETA and I’m pleased that the performance has increased, mostly in the networking area. but I’m disappointed to see that there is still no support for 10 bit encoded vidoes :( I hope that this will change with the following BETA version.

  • Ned Scott Dec 25, 2011

    @funrob

    Will come after Eden. There is an unofficial Windows build that might hold you over, as well as some options with external players. Check out: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Hi10P_playback

  • Anonymous Dec 25, 2011

    My acer aspire revo runs xbmc over windows. On 10.1 it was good but laggy as soon as I had to check time, or things. Now it runs uber smooth! Thanks guys, your superawesome!

  • Ned Scott Dec 25, 2011

    TO ALL WHO ARE POSTING ABOUT BUGS/ PROBLEMS/ ISSUES: Please come to the XBMC support forums and post about your issues there. We can better help you there, and you would help us better there as well, since we can get more details from you for fixing bugs. Operators are standing by…

  • Mcanic Dec 25, 2011

    Airplay is AWESOME!!! Works nice when playing videos, but playing music via the iPod app does not work (it starts but does not play and then stops a few secs later).

    Wow, it took me all this time to finally notice that the “Santa” was actually the XBMC mascot, Zapy. Here’s to hoping he’s just as unrecognizable the next he shows up, because I certainly didn’t miss him :-D

  • Ned Scott Dec 26, 2011

    @Manu
    While your second link is great, the haruhichan link is full of flawed logic and is downright incorrect in some parts. Hi10P (an 8 year old H.264 profile only meant to be used in editing rooms) is a passing fad that won’t last long with H.265/HEVC around the corner. There is no wide-spread consumer support for Hi10P and never will be. H.265/HEVC is the future.

    Nothing against you, Manu, I just really don’t like that page and the cancer it helps spread.

  • looby Dec 26, 2011

  • icaq Dec 26, 2011

    Just a short questions: I am currently using a nightly build from november. Are there a lot of new features in this first beta? Is it worth to upgrade? Thanks for all your hard work!

  • sub0ptimal Dec 26, 2011

    I had been running a nightly build from early November. I wasn’t able to get it working with the mysql database. Lots of “Unable to open database” errors in the log. I rolled back to the previous version.

  • taliz Dec 26, 2011

    Great to hear that the Live distro will be more of a “full buntu version”. Any chance it will be possible to setup and install to a software RAID?

  • Ginie Dec 26, 2011

    Wow, i am really impressed. Running my xbmc on asus at5iont-i, its sooo smooth now, great feeling. Edent deserves the title “best media player ever”

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2011

    Really good job! Like the new AirPlay feature (though I would like to get rid of @COMPUTERNAME).
    Love the new interface and that the application feels smoother.

  • Tom Dec 26, 2011

    Hi, I read that Eden would have Touch improvements, so that’s the first I wanted to check after installing Eden. It’s a no go again, it looks like it is impossible to use the Touchscreen to select a DVD Menu option. When the DVD start playing and show the Title Menu (vob files in a directory) I want to select a chapter or just want to press “Play movie”, instead the DVD menu option is selected after touching the touchscreen I got the XBMC menu en controll options. See http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?p=757996
    and or http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?p=800888

    I know that a Win32 laptop with multi touch screens are rare, next year in 2012 Windows 8 will bring much more Laptops and Tablets with touch. So it’s just a mather of waiting I guess.

    Best Regards,
    Tom

    I see XBMC now support AirPlay. Would be nice to know how to use it from iPhone and Android.

    Settings -> Network -> Services

    From there you’ll see you can enable it, set a password, etc.

    I think Windows users will need to install Bonjour from Apple. Don’t worry, you don’t have to install iTunes or Safari. I think this works and is minimal impact on Windows: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl999

    Linux, Mac OS X, and iOS have everything required already.

    Installed and running on 2 machines without any glitches. I hope the wife likes the updated interface.

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2011

    I can’t see a specific Eden beta thread at the forum … so can you start one?

  • Fed UP Dec 26, 2011

    I’m getting really fed up with the references to the ‘wife’ … usually implying they are stupid, dim. etc.

    Given the level of idiot posts on the forum … I doubt 0.00001% are from women … I suggest posters think twice before making some smart alec remark about the ‘wife’.

  • Fed UP Dec 26, 2011

    How about a separate forum section for Eden beta? Otherwise posts are going to be splattered all over the place!

  • funrob Dec 27, 2011

    @Ned_Scott and @Manu thanks for the Hi10 tips! MadVR sounds pretty cool. My XBMC media center is a Mac Mini running Lion that won’t fly. I’ll have to give this beta release and MadVR a go on our Win 7 Tablet. It doesn’t have a fancy GPU but it’s always fun to see what you can do.

    I love the Airplay feature. I’ve been using it in since it first appeared in the nightly builds. I had a feeling that when those stopped after 12/11 we’d be getting an xmas surprise. Now if only I could build from the tithed with Xcode 4.1 and the 10.6/10.7 SDKs. That 10.4u SDK requirement is a bit of a nuisance, though i commend the team for their support of older Macs!

  • funrob Dec 27, 2011

    Fed UP :
    How about a separate forum section for Eden beta? Otherwise posts are going to be splattered all over the place!

    @Fed UP I have used the term on the forums before. I think you are being sensitive. There doesn’t seem to be an implication AT ALL that “the wife” is stupid, nor have I EVER read a post on here referring to the WIFE in a degrading or insulting manner. It is the fact, at least in my case, the wife could care less how XBMC works, she just wants a really easy way to watch the movies and tv shows on what she calls the server. She isn’t techie and hates multiple remotes. 9 times out of 10 she is watching a tv show that is in SD, when she can just press 1 button to get it in HD. She just doesn’t care about it like the people on these forums do about media centers.

    That said, I love the EDEN release, been using it in the nightlies and have the central MySQL db running between ATV2, OpenElec, and Win7 with shared thumbs… It is excellent to say the least. Thanks DEVs and everyone in the community. Always getting better.

  • Marcus Zurhorst Dec 27, 2011

    I am wondering why my F-Secure Antivirus 2011 finds a virus during install of the Win32 version of the beta ?
    – It is complaining about “timidity.dll” in the path “C:\Program Files\XBMC\system\players\paplayer”.

    This file is supposed to have a virus named: “Ge:Trojan.Heur.GM.2008040880″

    Does any of you have a similar finding ?
    – The name indicates that the heuristics is spotting this one, so I assume (better: hope!) this is a false positive.

    Regards,
    Marcus

    SOPA will destroy the future of innovation and enforce the mass criminalization of people. If the right folks in congress have it there way, this will not pass… then again if the wrong people have it there way, they will flush computing innovations in the U.S. down the toilet… talk about great depression… this will really depress the economy to a stand still. If people didn’t have their favorites media online, there would be nothing left to live for… sometimes entertainment is all we have to keep smiling and getting through shit in life… you might as well take peoples lives if you are going to pass SOPA!

    Yeah, if you want to go off-reservation and compile tsp’s branch then you can use his myth pvr addon as an integrated frontend for mythtv in xbmc. I use it and just schedule, watch and delete recordings solely through xbmc now. All this PVR stuff won’t be synced up with the main code until after Eden though… so if you don’t want to compile yourself, your gonna have to wait I’m afraid

  • htpc guy Dec 29, 2011

    Will XBMC ever come with a default support for bluetooth remote, for example PS3 remote?
    Currently i keep configuring config-files in order to get the remote to work, what would be nice is a add-ins or a remote control window that register the keypress on the remote then i can asign a given functionality for that.

    SOPA will allow the U.S. authorities to go directory to Verisign (for .com .net .org) so changing to a non-US registrar will have no effect. You need to change the top level domain.

    “directly to Verisign” …

  • Maimon Mons Dec 30, 2011

    Totally support the move. You guys are doing the right thing.

    SOPA could prevent comments on forums like this. Purely a money grab by big media.

    Go Daddy supports it (they never said they changed their position!!!) because they got the seized domains from the government in the past.

  • sosaudio1 Dec 30, 2011

    About what time do you think you will pull the trigger on the change?

  • Wasabi Dec 30, 2011

    /soapbox
    All of you that think this is a good idea are under informed and are responding to superficial hype mongering by equally unintelligent sources. And you are foolish to think moving your domain is going to be seen as an act against SOPA. Your congressmen don’t care. This won’t even register on their minds when they are back at the table debating SOPA.

    What parts of SOPA did Go Daddy actually have to do with? What language of the bill did they pitch in? Admit it – you don’t know for sure do you. What you know is they were a supported and helped draft it. That is really pretty vague, isn’t it?

    Since then Go Daddy has withdrawn their support, officially, from the bill. They have issued a statement that they are now against SOPA. They are out of it and done with it.

    Go Daddy is an American company. Employing Americans. Bringing international money into America. Spending it and investing it in America. They provided you with extremely affordable domain registration in times when others were robbing you blind for the service. They have done nothing but good things for you and America.

    And with barely a blink of an eye you are against them and everything they do? And you are moving your support to a non-American entity? Not that it is a bad thing, but seriously? You think that is going to help if SOPA gets passed? That’s bullshit. The censor blocking isn’t going to be handled by a domain registrar! It’s going to be handled by all of the ISP’s you idiots! Your ISP is going to be the company censoring websites, doing what they can to block you from content. Sure a domain registrar can redirect the destination and they could be used – but come on.. You know the ISP is where this will all happen.

    Get your facts straight and think of the big picture! And stop responding immaturely to hype and fear mongering! Stopping your use of Go Daddy isn’t helping the situation – it’s just going to hurt an American company that has only provided you with affordable services since it started. If you want to express your concerns with SOPA – write a letter to your representatives! Pick up the phone! Bury their websites with complaints! That is the only way they will pay attention and it is the only way SOPA will get rejected. Anything else, like moving your domains from Go Daddy, is letting terrorists win..

  • dnixx Dec 30, 2011

    Wasabi:

    No one here has said they are against Go Daddy and “everything they do”. The point is that consumers respond when a company is doing bad things, or things they don’t like. Your vote with your wallet. This is a kind of regulation, and a good kind.

    “If you want to express your concerns with SOPA – write a letter to your representatives!”

    People are doing that too. Besides, the boycotters /have/ expressed their concerns with SOPA by letting Go Daddy what they think of the company’s endorsement of the bill. And look what has happened: Go Daddy now officially opposes it.

    “The censor blocking isn’t going to be handled by a domain registrar! It’s going to be handled by all of the ISP’s you idiots!”

    That is not the point of the boycott.

  • dnixx Dec 30, 2011

    @dnixx
    By the way, personally I will not go back to Go Daddy. They oppose SOPA because it has not “fulfilled its basic requirement to build a consensus among stake-holders in the technology and Internet communities”, and they /will/ support it “when and if the Internet community supports it”. A consensus doesn’t make it right.

  • Wim Dec 30, 2011

    Great look & feel this beta1, but here we go: Could we expect bitstreaming audio over hdmi, , DTS-HD Master Audio and TrueHD to make ik in the final release? It’s more than a “nice to have” feature….:)

  • Skindred Dec 30, 2011

    “Anything else, like moving your domains from Go Daddy, is letting terrorists win..”

    Great!

    While I would prefer to move the domain to another US based company I can understand the concern of the ignorance in Washington. Hopefully SOPA fails and we can go on being a semi-free Nation once again.

  • Steve Dec 31, 2011

    @stick
    Stick,
    I am running XBMC on Win 7 Home Premium in an old AOPEN mobo with a P4 3.0 gig 478 pin processor, 2 gigs mem ADATA 4200 speed, 4 gig flash mem dedicated ready boost, an old 36 gig 10k RAPTOR HDD and a ATI RADEON HD 4670 ICE Q AGP card. The audio runs from the video card in HDMI so i don’t need an audio card for my setup (strictly Home Theater/Web Surfing). The reason I’m telling you all this is because I did a lot of research before building this HTPC on a budget. If you want to do Bluray an 1080p video you will definitely need a card like mine or better and if you can OC your processor to 3.0 (a requirement for HD) then your good to go as long as you have all the other requirements. I recommend everything I mentioned earlier as far as the memory, flash mem and HDD so you can get every morsel of performance that you can. Now I also assume you would want a Bluray player at least so let me warn you from my experience so far. The only software for your player is PowerDVD 11.0, at least the only decent one, but it is still to much for this old of a machine to work very well. I only use it to watch Bluray discs and everything else (avi, mpeg, wmv) I watch through XBMC or VLC Media player – this one actually works best for all movie files especially mp4. XBMC is at its best on this old system for the plugin web content like PBS and the Gamer Preview channel and the likes. I also have it on a newer PC with a quad core and 8 gigs of mem and it is flawless on that machine for nearly everything. Anyway, hope this helped a little and didn’t just waste your time.

    @Jim, @Skindred and others that caught the ‘terrorist’ comment:
    LOL – yes it was at joke. I don’t normally post, but when I do I put in a rage joke at the end to see who may have actually read my post. :) No, I wasn’t actually serious about the terrorist comment – I thought it would be funny to add a quip troll comment at the end. :P

    Also, when I read that XBMC was moving from Go Daddy I honestly thought to myself “that makes sense”. I’m cool with whatever they decide – and anyone else for that matter. That’s the great thing about it – everyone is free to express their own views/opinions and free to take action as they desire. Which is the keystone problem with SOPA – it will remove the people’s ability to go and do whatever it is they wish to do at the whim of those that have the ability to sway the legal system otherwise. I’m very much anti-SOPA.

    @dnixx – excellent response!
    @Jags – LOL no – I am not sure he even uses the Internet.. ? :P
    @natethomas – thanks for your post! :)

    Lve it. Only thing I find a bit fiddly is the music player. If it could be more like WMP with being able to view/search library and add to a playlist all on the same view that would be great. also possibly same functionality for video/ music videos would almost make perfect. Overall great!!

    I’m still getting errors on this as well. I can’t even connect to xbmc.org other than through a proxy.

    To those with dns issues, some ISP’s takes longer than others to update. A temporary or permanent solution is to use OpenDNS.

  • hd420p Jan 02, 2012

    A good move. 2012 is gonna be a sketchy year for censorship and with less money in our bank accounts than this time last year its important to use that little bit of power your wallet contains to air your voice, however small it maybe.

    props to teamXBMC

    I am also having issues getting to all xbmc subdomains using google dns, tho the main site is working fine.

  • Misel Gosic Jan 02, 2012

    I’ve downloaded the beta for win32 and during the instalation the F-Secure AV system reported a Trojan in the paplayer. Please check it!

  • Nikko Jan 02, 2012

    Either use 205.251.128.242 as the url or use google open dns service ;)

  • Anonymous Jan 02, 2012

    still no forum?

  • dd2000 Jan 02, 2012

    Hi all… I have 1 issue, the menus for my dvd movies (video_ts and iso) often show a black screen, or are partly vissible… Any idea what causes this?

  • V Jan 02, 2012

    In British Columbia Canada and can’t install xbmc on my new apple tv. My older one with xbmc and icefilms won’t play anything. How long does it take for ISP to update? How do I change to a different DNS?

  • Rickey Tuggle Jan 02, 2012

    While the dns is down I was thinking how to edit the commands using the ip address instead of the dns.

    So

    apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2

    Would read something like

    apt-get install 205.251.128.242 -atv2

    This is correct in any form I get errors when trying to use this but maybe someone a bit more experienced might have a better use or syntax to use as a work around.

    Where do you enter the dns?

    @Nikko

  • John Jan 03, 2012

    When XBMC support DTS-HD MA and TrueHD over HDMI, then i use it.

  • dj_pirtu Jan 03, 2012

    Working great. Only no add-ons can be found, list is empty. And some dvds wont play, tries and stops immediately. All are finnish region 2 discs.

  • Mike Pisano Jan 03, 2012

    A week before a shift I always drop my TTL’s with the old providers so they expire faster in the caches around the globe.

  • sven Jan 03, 2012

    It works. However there it stops. I cannot use any of the add-ons for example and also icons from add-ons are not loading. No fixes on forums known to this. Running on my Apple TV (1)

    like you said, that’s not correct in any form. “org.xmbc.xmbc-atv2″ is the database entry for the package in the repository – not a URL. And it’s downloading from whatever ubuntu mirror you’ve chosen – not directly from xbmc.org

    Nice update, but not being able to increase font size (at least I can’t figure it out) from within XBMC is totally baffling! Nothing like sitting from a 42 inch screen squinting at the text! Having to manually edit the Fonts.xml file is silly.

  • Claes Jan 04, 2012

    Hi

    Plz add this to the final build:
    http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/11715

    I still can not see the language of the subtitle file, if the there is a long file name.

    @Steve
    hi steve,
    thanks for the response,
    I’m gonna try it tonight on one of my old sytems.
    hopefully it’ll work with my graphics card, Dharma wouldn’t…

    And I also wanted to say I love this software.
    i’m running it ‘flawlessly’ on my inspiron 1525
    and after trying every media player i could find,
    I finally found one that works great and looks even better

    Thank you xbmc, you changed my media life :)

    How long before this version is standard and not beta?

  • Subeysta Jan 05, 2012

    @Misel Gosic

    I get an issue where xbmc on atv-2 is dropping the first letter from my shared folders and then when i select the folder that contains the what i want to watch it says the share is not a available i have uninstalled reinstalled flushed library cache, but nothing changes, i found on my external drive if i cut and paste it some where else on the disk i then can access it but after a few hours or when not using xbmc the error comes back these folders contain 100s of gigs of vid and pictures it takes hours to copy and paste every time i want to watch something

    any ideas

    other than that it is much faster on evey aspect and love the work you guys do awesome stuff

  • Subeysta Jan 05, 2012

    @Craig

    not sure if you found out but you need to add repo to cydia

    http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/ios and then install everything in that repo its very easy

    the eden version works much better on the ipad but strongly suggest if you have iphone or ipod touch download the uremoteXBMC for it makes it so much better to use

  • Ned Scott Jan 05, 2012

    @thedannywahl

    Besides the point now, but while it’s using APT, this is on iOS not Ubuntu. Also, the repo the package is on uses the url http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/atv2/

  • FernMAc Jan 06, 2012

    Excellent! what a masterpiece of software! By far the best. Thanks a lot and keep the good work.

  • Sean Jan 06, 2012

    Eden does look nice, but now I can’t find the amazon or netflix plugins. Where can I find them? Thanks for all the great work!

  • Alex Jan 06, 2012

    Anyone have 192khz audio playing right with Beta1? I have Baraka MKV with DTS-HD audio at 192khz. I know that it just supposed to play the DTS Core and it starts playing it and then just chokes. Audio quits working entirely. Until I stop and restart. Same story on restart, where it plays for about 5 seconds then audio dies. I am running on Core i5 with AMD 6450 graphics card.

    Alex

  • Nick Jan 07, 2012

    Very nice, I like the new look. Only problem for me so far is DVDs do not play. When hitting play disc, screen blanks out for a second then returns to the home screen.
