iPhone and XBMC, the remote of the future?

September 16th, 2008 topfs2

Pondering one would have XBMC and iPhone, wouldn’t that little touchscreen make a good remote? Narcan made one, but is it all a pipe dream or could it be the remote of the future?

In a nutshell the remote is doing querys to XBMC’s webserver and displays the result in a neat fashion, but if we skip the technical mumbo jumbo it controls XBMC in that very apple sort of way. Which is one of the things I especially liked about it, it looks more or less exactly like the iPod mode on the iPhone.
The remote downloads both thumbs and info from the library and displays them tailored for the current view, good job!

I especially love the TV Show view as it really makes use of the wide icons in such a good way!

Narcan has though about something more, at some point those views might not be enough at which point you just flip it upside down and you’ll get something that looks like an IR Remote, very thorough work indeed!

Remote mode

The Remote mode is very responsive and works very well. The only thing I miss from this view is the ‘home’ button, something a former MCE user might miss.

All in all this application is very well polished and easy to set up, I would recommend it!

Some more tasty bits of information about this app can be found at Dave Fumberger’s (a.k.a Narcan) blog http://dave.fumberger.com/

    Wouldn’t it be great to have this wonderful piece of remote software on other mobile operating systems, like Symbian, Android or Windows Mobile.

    Or is there already something similar to this remote app for the other mobile operating systems?

    I made some changes to the demovideo on YouTube yesterday. Can you change the link to the new one ?

    @Edwin
    I created a J2ME client some time ago, it’s forwarding buttons from a J2ME capable device (I think this includes symbian?) ie w810i as I have. It is not nearly as fancy as the iPhone version though.
    I kindof discontinued it as noone seemed to be interested in it :)

    @GrandAnse
    Thank you, I added the link to the original post

    Maybe it needs to mention that this XBMC Remote App works with the iPod Touch as well as long as it has firmware 2.0 or later, (and the iPhone also needs to have firmware 2.0 or later).

    Thanks Dave Fumberger for a very cool iPhone App!

    I bought this as soon as I saw it on here, works ok for the most part. Can’t get some thumbnails to work (Movies and TV Episodes don’t work, the wide show banners work fine) or the shutdown/restart commands.

    I appreciate your hard work on the app, and I like the idea of it.
    Looks very good on the Youtube video too.
    But there is one thing which I don’t get.
    Why pay 2.99 for it.
    At the end, XBMC is free, so why pay for a remote app?

    It would be nice if when veiwing tv shows there would be a little tick or something on the eppisodes that have already been viewed.

    Could we have the TV show logos cached to prevent slow loading of images once the application is first launched with the TV show listing being displayed.

    @derChris ‘why pay 2.99 for it’
    Are you serious? I like a glass of wine but I don’t complain that a nice bottle costs money when grapes can be had for free.
    People have a right to be paid for their hard work if they so deem to. Besides 2.99 isn’t value to you, really?!

    Yeah how dare you suggest $2.99 is too much, I’m sure glad they raised it to $4.99! Like lewd764 said about fine wine we should expect them to raise the price even further as time goes on! Lewd764 and I have no problem when they raise it to $99.99! It’s JUST like fine wine! IDIOT.

    If xbmc wasn’t open-source, where would it be today? I disagree with the author’s choice to charge for this app, but I respect his right to do so (while secretly hoping that a WinMo version is released for free to the public).

    It’s a shame nothing even remotely similar exists for normal phones, like my WM6 Smartphone… Sadly, spending 200+ dollars on iPod touch only to have this thingie is out of the question..
