Welcome sponsor: Weather Underground

December 10th, 2011 theuni

You may have noticed that for the past few weeks the Weather section of XBMC has become unable to provide updated information due to our default weather provider moving to a fully fee-based API. A brief scramble ensued, and the change provided the kick-in-the-pants we needed to move weather providers into our add-ons framework so that we can send out updates between releases, and allow users to choose between different sources much more easily.

We have now added the final piece of the puzzle: A default provider who has agreed to sponsor XBMC and its users with all the data we need. A special thanks to Weather Underground for working quickly with us to fill the void. It’s great to work with companies who see the value in donating their services to open-source communities like ours. We hope that they see some extra commercial interest as a result.

Thanks also to ronie for having the add-on ready before the ink was dry.

Users of recent nightly builds have already seen the change, and it will be fully baked in to the upcoming Beta1 release.

nice! I operate a weather station that also uploads to wunderground. It would be awesome if XBMC would be able to pull data from station ids at WU.

As long as my home city is present in their forecast, I’m totally okay with that ;-) .

I seem to have found a bug considering the “Weather Underground” weather plugin. In the Home Screen Weather Menu, the sidebar Location Up/Down Arrows seem to be reversed, ie. when you press the Down Arrow to change to Location 2 from Location 1, it goes up instead and loops to Location 3 and when you press Up from Location 1 it goes down to Location 2.

The theme i’m using is the default Confluence and the Latest Nightly to recontain the Weather feature “XBMCSetup-20111210-f1ae0b6-master.exe” for Windows 7 32bit.

Using the 12/10 nightly I can’t figure out how to change from Celsius to Fahrenheit using the new wUnderground. BTW- if you can get their WunderMap to show in XBMC it’ll make people very happy, it simply is the most awesome weather map ever.

  10. December 11th, 2011 at 10:00 | #10

    @HEX
C and F are set to your clock. So if XBMC thinks you are in Europe, for example, it will display C. If it thinks you are in the US, it’ll display F.

@natethomas Clock? Does that mean Canadians would get F? Because that wouldn’t be nice.

Clock and Weather values should be as fully user defined as possible. Same in Ubuntu where the clock is not formatted how I want it to be. If people want Celsius instead of a “default” Fahrenheit, then that should be included as an option. Same goes for the time & date notations. Personally, I would also like to have the clock formatted f.e. to 09:15, instead of 9:15.

    @natethomas
Please let me echo Stephan’s sentiments. In fact, I suspect the US is one of the few countries that wouldn’t want temperatures in Celsius, although individual preferences may vary. An option to override the autodetect would be greatly appreciated.

Any chance of Environment Canada weather addon? I’m pretty sure they provide the info for free.

Oh my god yes! The Wundermap is by far the most useful tool for near real time radar that’s accurate. If at all possible, perhaps Wunderground has a way to even use the fullscreen map with overlays it currently has in beta still I think. It has become part of my autoloading tab group on browser launch. I think it would be a game changer in instant weather for a media app such as XBMC.

It wouldn’t even have to be super complicated, as they’ve done a great job making it useful while not overdone.

I need to go click some random links on their site now!

Thanks much btw to all who chose this path/got this working!

The unit used for temperature is still controlled by the region setting in Settings->Appearance->International.

    December 11th, 2011 at 19:17 | #17

Thanks found the setting, in Settings > Appearance > International > Region
It was on Australia, I changed it to US (12h) and it is now properly F. Just to let you folks know, Canada is an option and it’s properly C not F, there are also several other regional options to customize it. It really needs a link to it in the Weather Plugin, I was frustrated.

Would it be possible to choose wind speeds displayed as meters/second instead of kilometers/hour? This would make a lot more sense in Sweden, where I live. Perhaps elsewhere too?

  21. December 11th, 2011 at 20:20 | #21

Yes, finally a weather app that gets the temps correctly for my location.
    Great job!

XBMC is just amazing! Your programmers are tops! What you are doing with the pre-EDEN nightly builds to satisfy your loyal followers deserves our thanks! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!.
I’m using Transparency with Weather Plus to get my map display and although I live in Canada, the US map shows the Niagara area very well. I think a weather map would enhance any weather display!
In closing, may i say THANK YOU! again for such a fine job your programmers are doing on XBMC! Keep up the great work!

@ronie That is an absolutely valid place for it to be documented, and if I really wanted to fix it I would of looked in the wiki or forums eventually. I felt at the time that I should of been able to get to this setting from the Weather page or wUnderground config, and spent several minutes looking for the option that I was obviously “missing”, and by this I mean I knew there must be a way to change it easily that I was overlooking. In short, for a minute or two I was a frustrated normal user wanting it to just work. ;) I’ll have to follow up later with a feature suggestion to improve the UI with a link and description.

@m0deth totally agree, both the wUndermap and the full screen are really stellar examples of what a web mashup should be, and having them in XBMC would be a huge leap forward in weather via media center. Can’t wait to see what all comes of this, loving the nightlies so far!

I love the weather statistics. What I’ve been dying to see in XBMC is weather historical data. Like the line graphs on Weather Underground. I love looking at what the weather has been doing in the past X hours/days/months. If someone could incorporate that into a plugin, it’d be kick arse.

Fantastic – Weather Underground is a great weather provider! Let’s hope this initiative helps bring more users to their website too, and that rumour spreads to other companies to devote time to open source projects such as this one!

Agreed! That would be cool, as I also have a personal weather station that uploads data to Weather Underground.

Any reason for not updating the nightlies? I do not any see anything after dec 10. The last nightly is of 10th Dec. Is it my ISP Cache issue or there are no nightlies being generated till Eden in officially unveiled?
Anyways, a big THANKS for a such a nice work!
