Updated add-on repository for nightly users
For those of you using unstable or nightly builds, you will soon notice a change in available add-ons at the xbmc.org repository. Dharma users shouldn’t fret as nothing changes for stable add-ons.
With each new version of XBMC, there are sure to be changes that require add-on authors to make changes in order to remain compatible. We have made improvements to python, JSON, the skinning engine, etc. So much like Firefox, we will be asking all add-on authors to test their creations against each version of XBMC and mark them as compatible in each before they’re available in that version. For more detailed information on API changes for Eden, check out the wiki.

So what does this mean for you?
If you are a stable user happily using Dharma, it means nothing. Only that bleeding-edge add-ons are getting good testing before you’ll see them in the next stable version
If you are an unstable/nightly user, it means that from now on you will only see add-ons that have been accepted into the Eden repository. Much like Firefox, they will likely be few in the beginning and really begin to pile in when we enter the beta stage for Eden.
So remember: if you open your add-ons list and your favorite one is not listed, poke the author in the forum and ask him/her to make the necessary changes and submit to the Eden repository, or better yet, help with it!
And before anyone asks, the new Feature Friday has been a big hit. Nate is out of town this week, but he’ll be back next Friday with another installment.
Does that mean that the Linux PPA is now safe to use?
Please port Add-on repo’s to Github…
Talking about Linux PPA (first comment), some news about Ubuntu Natty builds on Launchpad PPA?
@Oral-B
The stable PPA is always safe to use. After all, it is the PPA for official releases.
What might not not be suitable to all users – nor safe for production enviroments – are nightly builds. Entirely different matter.
Sorry, I meant the *unstable* PPA for nightly builds… About a month ago, theuni said they were doing some kind of refactor and that things would likely be broken for a while. Just wondering if it’s safe now.
@Oral-B
The unstable PPA is _never_ safe. Its meant for crazy users (like myself) who like to get into trouble testing all the changes and new features.
Unless you identify yourself in that short description, I can’t advise you or anyone else to use unstable packages.
Probably theuni was referring to the new add-on refactor (binary add-ons and whatnot), python changes and lot more interesting things going on. That’s also the main reason its called unstable: it’s always evolving.
@h.udo
Yes, however theuni wrote a month ago that the new Linux unstable PPA should not be used by _anyone_.
So we are kind of waiting for an unstable PPA that we can try out.
which python version (3.* or 2.*) will compatible with Eden ?
2.x
@Anza – truly the unstable is never ’safe’ to use.. for instance, right now, scripts that use their own default skin are broken and since it is Eden-pre code, some addons will not work at all..
OOC, is there anything new in eden related notifications about new addons in repositores? With Dharma, one has no clue if any new addon appears in the repository, other than browsing for what’s available.
When?
@Anza
Ok, he has right to wright it. But I use it for month or two and happy like giant pink elephant ))
