Updated: XBMC update for iDevice/AppleTV2

February 6th, 2011 theuni

We expected a good amount of interest from the last post, but the response was overwhelming.

As a result, we have been hard at work fixing bugs and adding missing features from the first release. So here it is, v2 of XBMC for your AppleTV2/iDevices.

Update: A last-minute build-bug caused the SMB+Live Essentials fix to be left out. This is fixed now, users still experiencing this bug should update to get the fix.

Changelog:

  • GUI speedup
  • Webserver enabled
  • RTMP support
  • AC3/DTS Audio Dialogs
  • Rotating for the iPhone and iPad
  • Black and Dim screensavers working
  • Bluetooth Support
  • SMB shares with Windows Live Essentials should work.
  • Sleep timer works
  • Add-on updates now working
  • Decrypted ISO playback works
  • Thumbnail creation fixed

This question of 1080p display has come up very often, so here’s the answer: XBMC can decode 1080p video but for now the ATV2 is limited to display 720p output. Its still unknown whether this is a hardware or software restriction.

For more FAQ see this page.

Update Instructions:

AppleTV2: Connect via SSH in and run “apt-get update && apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2′”

iOS: Upgrade through Cydia.

The XBMC developers are hard at work on non-apple related features as well, expect a post in the next day or two outline what else we’ve been doing.

    Flake :
…But could someone explain to me why this can’t be put on the appStore…
What exactly makes XBMC not suitable for the appStore ?

Can we get an answer on this question? I also don’t understand why XBMC could not be on AppStore…

`cause Apple sucks and they don´t like alternative Software…

I would have never bought an Apple TV before. But now, XBMC makes it well worth it. Apple should be thanking you guys!!!

    Hello All,

First off, this is awesome. I have my ATV2 modded using Greenpois0n and running xbmc. I’ve been a long time user of XBMC on the original old school xbox’s. There is one under every tv in my house. I love xbmc and am so happy it has evolved past it’s beginings on the first gen xbox console.

    Few questions:

1.) Musical visualizations. I loved these in the XBMC builds by T3ch on the xbox consoles. Are these working for the IOS port? Is there anyway to get the visualization packages that exisist for XBMC compiled for the xbox on the ATV2 version?

2.) I have no idea what Platform the Roku works off of…but is there any earthly way to get xbmc on a roku?

I’m seriously considering picking up a second ATV2 because XBMC appears to work so darn well!

Decrypted ISO playback from SMB share fails immediately or within a few seconds from start.

    @dergago

wow. what a thoughtful reply. it’s a wonder people don’t understand the situation with such eloquence as yours. does boxee box let people run pure xbmc on it? does roku? does googletv? where is microsoft’s xbmc set-top box? why limit your inane rants to a single company? all those companies must suck and don’t like alternative software!

no small part of apple’s success is due to their perfectionist’s control of the ecosystems surrounding their products. apple is of the “do what you do great, and don’t do anything else” variety, and that means that the products they do sell perform the functions they’re meant to extremely well. what it unfortunately means for us tinkerers is that there are a lot of non-polished things that apple products aren’t “allowed” to do by apple. imagine someone saying “hey, 1080p keeps bailing on my appletv2 running xbmc streaming over the smb protocol via a bluetooth connection! apple suxors!” apple instead makes sure the product does what they say it does, and keeps it that way, slowly expanding the capabilities of each product. it’s an understandable, if not sometimes frustrating business model.

on the plus side, though, when hackers, developers and tinkerers get together, they can prove that there is a market for outside development on an apple product (which is why you now have third-party apps on the iphone). this is, of course, a simplification of the overall issue with apple, but i don’t have the time or energy to write a novel.

in the mean time, let’s keep tinkering. =]

    @Panos2000
apple are not inclined to accept apps that act like widgets for starters as Steve says so and lets face it if the idevices were running widgets it would detract people from buying a specific app for that purpose = less money for apple.

Galaxy tab 10.1 looks promising running android. Not out yet but would be a great device for XBMC don’t you think?

Thank you XBMC team no more noisy XBOX in the bedroom now.

XSISTOR – I used Green Poison http://greenpois0n.com/ it has MAC LINUX and Windows versions to jailbreak your ATV2 plus it has an Auto installer for XBMC. I don’t know if there is any downside to doing it this way. I’ve had it running now for 2 days via wireless with no issues.

Hi I’m kind of stuck. On iPhone 4…When I go to videos I’m presented with just the “…” and when I tap on it nothing happens. On the bottom right corner it says page 2/2..when i did a hard reboot and went back page 1/1, but it didn’t matter…I was able to add sources before and now I can’t! Please help!

Archos 70 would be great with XBMC on it. It looks and works good with the official XBMC remote.

Xbmc is an amazing product all around.
There’s just one nagging issue I have with it.
    the buffering…..
even embedded flash players continue to buffer when the vid is paused.
sadly that doesn’t seem to be the case in xbmc…
and to me that is a deal breaker love the app but man it is annoying that it doesnt continue to buffer when paused.

Ok, I have jailbroken apple tv2 with Greenpoisi0n on windows, and loaded xbmc. It seems to work fine but I want to upgrade xbmc. I can ssh into it with winSCP, but I can figure out how to upgrade by running “apt-get update && apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2′”. Where is this or how do you run this? Also, I want to change the weather to my city……anyone know where and how to change it?

I meant that I cant figure out how to upgrade…………..
