Updated: XBMC update for iDevice/AppleTV2

February 6th, 2011 theuni

We expected a good amount of interest from the last post, but the response was overwhelming.

As a result, we have been hard at work fixing bugs and adding missing features from the first release. So here it is, v2 of XBMC for your AppleTV2/iDevices.

Update: A last-minute build-bug caused the SMB+Live Essentials fix to be left out. This is fixed now, users still experiencing this bug should update to get the fix.

Changelog:

  • GUI speedup
  • Webserver enabled
  • RTMP support
  • AC3/DTS Audio Dialogs
  • Rotating for the iPhone and iPad
  • Black and Dim screensavers working
  • Bluetooth Support
  • SMB shares with Windows Live Essentials should work.
  • Sleep timer works
  • Add-on updates now working
  • Decrypted ISO playback works
  • Thumbnail creation fixed

This question of 1080p display has come up very often, so here’s the answer: XBMC can decode 1080p video but for now the ATV2 is limited to display 720p output. Its still unknown whether this is a hardware or software restriction.

For more FAQ see this page.

Update Instructions:

AppleTV2: Connect via SSH in and run “apt-get update && apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2′”

iOS: Upgrade through Cydia.

The XBMC developers are hard at work on non-apple related features as well, expect a post in the next day or two outline what else we’ve been doing.

    yay for the atv2 and xbmc, this is an awesome combination!!!

    i love you guys! =]

    for those apple haters: get a grip, apple is just a company like any other. they clearly have made a product (atv2) that can work well in combination with xbmc. seriously. get over your irrational hatred of a company and check it out. it’s only $99 for pete’s sake! :-P

  4. February 6th, 2011 at 15:15 | #4

    Brilliant, got it up and running..

    Still can’t connect to a share on my windows 7 system running essentials though.. I just get a prompt for login credentials :(

    Other than that, fantastic work!

    Very Thanks!

    Does untethered jailbreaking work on Apple TV 2?
    So you can now cold reboot without any problem?

    ^^ little L

    make sure 10.0-4 was loaded

  13. February 6th, 2011 at 16:03 | #13

    @Davilla

    Yep, 10.0-4 is showing and compiled today according to the system info.
    All password sharing is turned off so everything can access everything, so not sure what’s wrong.

  14. February 6th, 2011 at 16:04 | #14

    AWESOME! Keep up the good work! How about XBMC AirPlay support? ;-)

    PS: anyone know how to sleep the iOS Apple TV via SSH?

    I only get a black screen after this update. Has anybody else ran into this issue?

    February 6th, 2011 at 16:29 | #16

    This is more of a feature request, but given the volatility of jailbreaks and updates, etc perhaps a feature to allow archive/import of settings/library to a network location (smb/afp) would be appropriate? If a new jailbreak comes out that allows cold restarts without tethering, I’d love to not wait 4 hours for my library to rebuild itself.

    Besides that – awesome. This is actually the only reason I bought a new AppleTV — Apple owes you one! Hah.

    Nice update.
    GUI speed improvements alone make this a great upgrade.
    On the bad side, ISO files still dont work. Crash back to menu after a few seconds.
    Ill wait and see if anyone else has the same issue and if so I’ll make a proper forum post.

    @davilla

    Thanks for the help. A tip for those experiencing the same issue. Do a killall AppleTV first so you don’t have to jailbrake again.

  24. February 6th, 2011 at 17:46 | #24

    @Anonymous

    I don’t have windows live ID installed. Just Windows Live Essentials 2011

  25. RyanG
    February 6th, 2011 at 19:05 | #25

    @Danmed

    Live Essentials 2011 is the same / contains the Live Sign-In Assistant “bug”. This should be fixed with this update though, according to;

    “SMB shares with Windows Live Essentials should work”

    Also, I thought the latest release from greenpois0n supported untethered booting for 4.2.1?? As I don’t have any device running 4.2.1 I can’t confirm…

    February 6th, 2011 at 19:28 | #27

    Thank you team-XBMC! This version is mutch more stable and now I’m able to control xbmc on the ipad with my iPhone and visa versa. =D

    February 6th, 2011 at 19:40 | #28

    The latest release of greenpois0n (RC5) does not support the AppleTV, but RC 6 will support 4.2.1 on the AppleTV.

    Great – thank you! Another atv2 user who’s pretty happy about his awesome new XBMC…

  30. February 6th, 2011 at 21:52 | #30

    @RyanG

    Lol.. I realise it “should” be fixed but it’s not.. i wouldn’t of mentioned it otherwise :)

    February 6th, 2011 at 22:30 | #31

    Thank you VERY much for your hard work, guys. XBMC on the ATV2 was 90% of the reason I bought the device. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a lot guys! amazing work.
    ISO files dont work for me. Also 720 videos work well on thy XBMC on AppleTV 1 but work horribly slow on XBMC on Apple TV 2
    I suppose this is a work in progress anyway.

    irritated… Did the update (been doing this for some time, so not all that difficult) and it dropped off the XBMC. Now it appears I need to re-load iOS and re-jailbreak to get XBMC back…

  35. February 7th, 2011 at 01:11 | #35

    Yes, you have to boot-tethered… Check out Seas0npass.

    Great work guys! thank you!

    Does XBMC now supports the subtitles format used by Apple??
    I’ve bunch of HDLITE mp4 playing perfectly well on my non-jailbroken aTV, but I’d like to free it from iTunes.
    on my 1st Gen AppleTV, XBMC (Dharma beta) wasn’t able to read&display these subtitles.

    That would be great!

    Awesome work guys,

    Where it says “iOS: Upgrade through Cydia.”

    What is Cydia?

    February 7th, 2011 at 09:02 | #46

    I tried this, and it’s a very nice experience on the ATV2. However, I found 1080p playback somewhat choppy, so I’m back to my WDTV Live for now.

  46. Joe
    February 7th, 2011 at 12:06 | #47

    iOS 4.1x => AppleTV2 displays 4.0 firmware => untethered jailbreak

    iOS 4.2x => AppleTV2 displays 4.1 firmware => tethered jailbreak, but (future) greenpois0n RC6 may provide untethered jailbreak

    All AppleTV2 in store already have iOS 4.2 installed, so you’ll have to use the tethered jailbreak and may later use the GP RC6 unthethered jailbreak.

    If you wait too long, Apple may release and ship devices with iOS 4.3x, which won’t be supported with GP RC6.
