Dharma Beta 2

September 14th, 2010 theuni

Just over two weeks after beta1, the next pre-release version of Dharma is ready for testing. We have closed many bugs, touched up some translations, and updated a substantial number of addons. With beta2, we also made the last-minute decision to include web-interfaces as addons. This means that we will be able to keep the new interface (still a work in progress, should be ready by final) up to date, and also developers may submit their interfaces to the official repository. There are several in development already: some for file management, some for editing metadata, and some to simply control XBMC remotely.

A note on versioning. In the past, we have used a year.month scheme to denote the stable versions. This has proven problematic because it forced us to estimate the release date, and to bump the version number if we fell behind schedule. In addition, this complicated the work of packagers on various platforms who were having to keep up with our version changes. Therefore we have decided to call Dharma 10.0, and the next stable (codenamed “Eden”) will be 11.0.  Simple.

The same warnings from beta1 still apply. Dharma is quite stable already, but don’t forget that it is still in beta. Builds for all platforms are uploaded and ready to go. Download the latest in mediacenter goodness right here. Ubuntu users may use the svn ppa repository for pre-release builds.

Feel like helping? There are several recent reports of hard-freezes while browsing movies in the library. This is likely due to our thumbnail generator and we need samples to reproduce the issue. If you are running into this while using Beta1 or Beta2, please file trac ticket and be prepared to send us the sample file that we request. Without samples, we can’t reproduce and fix the problem.

    @TJBT
    Thanks TJBT – pressing the “\” key did the trick and Dharma opens up correctly. Easy when you know how!

    Really great work! I switched from MythTV and now use the MythTV Source Plugin. It just works great and compared to MythTV (inc. plugins) everything looks so brilliant and is easy to use. Just thanks!

    Walt :
    Hello,
    i’m using XBMC Dharma2 under Ubuntu 10.04. I’m typing from Italy, there’s any way to (plugin) watch italian channels in streaming?
    This Dharma2 is working great for me. Great job.
    When the final version will be released?

    XBMC will later on have PVR capabilities, so if you have a PC Tv-tuner you will be able to watch and record your tv channels.

    P.S. Bello vedere qualche altro italiano che utilizza XBMC. ;) Ciao ciao!

    Love the new release, haven’t had the chance to play with everything in Dharma b2 but so far the CPU usage by itself is phenomenal using the DXVA renderer. Love the release and appreciate the hard work!

    Hello and good luck with this product. After having a series of problems with sound on win Vista 64 and Dharma1 &2 I found out this thread concerning sound problems: http://ac3filter.net/forum/index.php?topic=377.0
    Long story short, please also compile and make available a windows 64bit version.

    Thank you for all your time and effort in this amazing product.

    @Drew
    I had the same issue. After a little time of fiddling around, i found out, that the alsa sound system (kernel parts) was no longer included in the kernel, which was updated through aptitude safe-upgrade. but there are alsa backport packages available solving that issue with the ease of just installing a new package. just execute aptitude search alsa | grep backport and look for the right version that suits your running kernel version.

    Hi all,

    first things first: thank you VERY much to all the people working in this proyect. I am using XBMC to manage my media collection in my HTPC and this program is, by far, the best I have tried… Just one quick question: when Theuni said that “[...]there are several in development already: some for file management, some for editing metadata [...]“, do this mean that in the near future we will be able to easily edit/change movie info??. This is the only thing I am really missing from XBMC. I tried using programs like xbne or ember media manager but I was not able to edit the movie/tv shows info, so I am really excited about the posibility of adding this feature in XBMC.
    Again, thanks to al the people behind this proyect…

    Dharma 1 was already more stable than ms office and almost all stand alone media players. Great job guys! Also very happy to see DIVXA, for me with my htpc (with win 7) it’s a must have feature.

    Great job as always, I’m looking forward for the release like a child before christmas :)

    I tried the beta 2 on my main PC though, and I’m experiencing a lot of difficulties, apparently it’s something related to the display driver. So XBMC does often not respond and I may even get a black screen with the monitor switching to sleep mode. I’m running with a GeForce 7600 GT under Windows 7 32bits.

    Will it be possible, in the nearest future, to update XBMC via. the add-on system?

    I would love it if I was notified in XBMC, and could update it without ever having to open a browser.

    Update/Request

    1st this is a great app and only getting better, I have been using it as a client for my GBPVR for over a year now.

    Update – This is what I’ve found so far, listing my TV Recorded Shows the season and episode are all backward, my 1st season and episode are at the bottom of the list with the newest at the top. This my be a normal not sure with the new version.

    Request – 2 things for Win32 version 1 .be nice to have a Netflix button added, I have tried to add external player and never could get it to work 2. Library mode will not let me display my recordings with the default name example default label is Law & Order_20100926_20002100 this is the date time stamp on it.

    thanks

    using ubuntu 9.04 with 9.11 xbmc agreed to another PC via wifi to see my videos, I’m with Ubuntu 10.04 and both the beta one and beta two. Does no more than 2-3 minutes to load each video. Buffer is problem?

    The only fault that I see, is glorious to see mkv with an Intel 945 :D . THANKS A great job.
