Farewell XBOX

May 27th, 2010 theuni

XBMC (XBMP really) started as a program for modified XBOX consoles. In the following years, XBMC has grown into a multi-platform, multi-architecture media center that runs on most standard hardware. The hardware and legal limitations of the XBOX were always a concern and the Team has instead focused on running on the hardware that most people already have.

The last official release for the XBOX by the XBMC team was Atlantis, over 18 months ago. Since then, one brave soul (Arnova) has been merging code from the main codebase into the XBOX branch in our repository. Because there were many users out there that took advantage of these updates, we had no problem with this.

But times have changed. The XBOX has hard limits for what it can handle. Some users are satisfied with these limits, and we encourage them to use XBMC there if they are happy. But it is a popular misconception that official XBOX development is still taking place by the team, so we have decided to set it free. We have enough on our plates already, and worrying about a deprecated platform just increases our workload. A few days ago the XBOX branch was finally removed from our subversion repository.

But loyal XBMC for XBOX users fear not! In addition to his role as an XBMC developer, Arnova plans to continue development on the XBOX — just not here. You can find the new project’s home at sourceforge. We’re leaving it in his hands to decide how to handle the project’s administration. How he manages the forum, bug tracker, scm, developers, etc. is up to him. In other words, don’t complain to us ;-)

In order to help users to find relevant help and discussion, we will be making the XBOX section of our forum read-only on Monday, June 07. It may be moved in the future, but for now it will stay for reference. This also means the end of XBOX support in the wiki and IRC.  Arnova has requested a snapshot of the wiki that he may host if he wishes as we begin to prune XBOX-specfic information from ours.

We wish Arnova and the project the best of luck as we bid a fond farewell to a big part of our past.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. The XBMC (and the XBMP) made my original Xbox the center of my HTPC for almost a decade. The community of support for it was incredible, and showed the world the power of open source development.

It’s sad to see it go but I guess you can only support the old technology for so long. I’m still a big user of XBMC for Xbox and I am running it on 2 modified Xboxs here. Even connected to a HDTV they still do a great job with standard definition content and there are plenty of scripts to make use of. I can’t see myself ditching them anytime soon as they are very useful.

What is the point of still calling this xbmc then … you guys might want to rename your stuff..

  5. May 27th, 2010 at 15:36 | #5

Thats why it is called XBMC and not Xbox Media Center. They already changed the name. (XBMC don’t stand for Xbox Media Center no more)

Thank you for all the work done on the original XBOX, XBMC was my main reason to buy it. I too have moved on (AppleTV with Crystal) and I’m looking forward to the upcoming EPG feature.

    I reckon this was inevitable.
Big bow to the tool that kinda changed my life. And I do have one: 3 kids that basically grew up with seeing movies and
their pictures via the trusty xbox1.
So my last kudos to the media experience I favored and advertised to others for so long, and still do: XBMP/XBMC.
The xbox1 still sits snug below my nowadays flat TV, connected over component monster cables. Still doing 720p.
Next to it stands this other box, its successor, called ASRock, the new kid on the block. Basically doing the same with a sh.tload
more horsepower on board. The only diff is some pixels and processing bigger files. But he, it really looks cool in full HD.
    Yeah, it was inevitable.

Well, thank you for all the hard work over the years. I’ll still use XBMC on xbox, because I bought him just for media. Arnova, thanks for your support of xbox. Although I’m not one of those who would be visible on forums, I certainly appreciate new features and bugfixes.

XBMP, followed by XBMC Xbox is where it all started for me. I upgraded to an HTPC at the end of last year. Thanks for the memories. XBMC has gone onto bigger, and better things.

I still use XBMC on my Xbox every day. Thanks for the hard work guys.

Though I made the decision last time I felt there was a stable build for my use (only recently) that I would never update my XBMC on my Xbox again. If it ain’t broken don’t fix it, I say.

Anyway, I’d like to restate my thanks to the developers – especially Arnova – and also to T3CH for building the Xbox branch semi-regularly.

Farewell indeed, I moved on to the Revo myself when the old xbox1 stopped booting up but with a couple of hard smacks it came back to life so now it lives in the bedroom hopefully with a few more years of service left. So whats the best version to run on the xbox1 now i think i will update it one last time ;)

A tear. I am so glad to have been part of that wonderful device. I really believe that Xbox Media Center paved the way for all the other media player interfaces, and still has them all beat hands down. There was no Windows Media Center before the XBMC. XBMC was the first and the best. I still have some Xbox 01’s but I have moved on to XBMC Linve and For Linux on Asus with Atom and NVidia.

Thank you devs for your long hard work.

Well, as others said it I still use my XBOX with XBMC, my parents know how to use it.

And I want to say that even if no more support for this platform is done, this Xbox support should still go in the hall of fame. And even if the afore mentionned wiki pages get pruned, I would like to have some history page citing the wild origins of this formidable project. The introduction page on the wiki would need some more details, pictures, milestones, significant changes (like when the project was made to run on computer in order to ease skin development). Well just a page for historical purpose.

Anyway, again, I thank everyone who worked on the XBMC project, and also the ones who worked on the components XBMC is built upon.
Thank you! You really, really rock dudes!

I will always have such fond memories of my XBOX/XBMC days! The fusion of Linux and XBMC was the telltale sign that XBOX development would soon cease and the timing is right for this step. My (3) XBOXes will continue to run in my Home Theater until they give up the ghost, though; then I’ll shed a tear (or three), then hit Newegg.com for my first HTPC build! T3CH, Arnova and everyone else in Dev & the Forums, I truly appreciate all of your efforts in this project. I pray you guys make BOO-COO money on your upcoming projects because you guys have made countless modders very happy over the last 10 or so years!!! Thank you!!!

More tears – I understand the need to move forward and all of your reasons for doing so. (sniff sniff)

Like most people here I use XBMC Xbox daily and will continue to do so for years to come. I Windows, Linux and Apple TV versions as well, but nothing is better and more cost effective then XBOX.

Special thanks to Arnova for all his efforts and his continued dedication to this project, we all can’t thank him enough and support him as he takes this project forward.

Let’s not forget the entire XBMC team for all the hard work in the trunk and all the branches of future features to be merged.

    With Extreme Thanks and Gratitude,

Thanks for all the work on the Xbox! I have helped more then 16 people get set up with XBMC on their xboxes… and now we’re all moving into the HD world with XBMC. I always promote XBMC whenever I can because it’s the bomb.com. I still have a modified xbox i’ll keep using and updating for road trips etc.
    THANKS T3CH,

It’s really impressive how money makes people change this way. I remember when XBMC started, the site didn’t have any sponsor, now it’s full of them, it’s always the same. I thank to ALL the people who worked in this project, though, but those who helped this guys to put some money in their hands and never got nothing, god bless all of you, please never be like them.

I’m going to run XBMC on my Xbox until I no longer have at least one SD TV to hook it up to. Hopefully by that point I wont need a box anymore and that the software is just an app on the TV.

Good news in my book, not that i have anything against the XBMC Xbox users, but this is great news, now you guys can focus your resources else where, as you stated. Great work as always, the program is great, i use it all the time in my living room, every movie night in this house is watched with XBMC on my HTPC. Once again great work guys, best program i have ever used…

http://www.xbmc4xbox.org/ has a forum that can be used for XBMC discussion and support on the XBox still.

While I understand stopping support, closing the forum seems a bit…overkill. No reason not to allow people to still interact/assist each other here. But…guess that will be done in a new location.

  29. May 28th, 2010 at 01:09 | #29

@Necro: Problem is those folk interact with each other on our main forums, not in the xbox subforum. Thus, it involves support work for us, which none of us are qualified to really do anymore. I believe there are forums being setup directly at the new SF project, though that ofcourse is up to arnova :)

Awesome decision! XBMC must develop further to innovate, to expand, to grow into a real platform that can run addons and plugins like none we’ve seen before and truly show off what a media consuming environment should be. XBOX was simply dragging the project behind, and must have contributed to many decisions being delayed or scrapped in favor of legacy systems. No longer! Great bold decision, guys!

    @Jolmash

this is just funny. i’ve worked on this project since 2004 (yes, i did a lot of shit on the xbox as well). i consider myself one of the main devs of xbmc. and it is truthfully, really, a case of ‘and all i got was this friggan t-shirt’. that’s all xbmc ever earned me in terms of physical goods.

however, there are good news. we will, as always, perform all our stuff out in the open, so next year you can have a look at our annual accounts. maybe that can shut confused souls as yourself up.

I ‘ve got 2 Jtagged 360’s waiting for an XBMC port. The hardware is powerful enough to run XBMC HD and then some. Common, lets do it and relive the glory days!

  42. May 28th, 2010 at 06:07 | #42

I like so many others got into XBMC via their trusty Xbox and most of the thanks goes to TC3H for his awesome builds. IMHO, there is still one thing that XBMC does WAY better than XBMC on any other platform – the visualisations. It still is the only platform that has really decent, eye-popping 3D visualisations, that puts the ones on XBMC to shame (yes, I know they are custom written for the Xbox GPU – but you can’t deny how much better they are than milkdrop et al).

I’ll miss you Xbox – you sit in my loft, all quiet and alone, but hopefully when my kids get old enough to hold things, I can pass the Xbox on to them, as their own personal Media Centre….just make sure they keep it locked away in a cupboard, since it still sounds like a jet engine compared to my revo ;)

For all the people that want to use XBMC on the Xbox, I’d recommend [http://www.xbmc4xbox.org/ ] A new and exciting site dedicated to keeping the dream alive. Thanks to all the development guys that had an input on this project over the years of which only a few still remain. I seriously think it’s time for a name change though now that you’ve severed all ties {with your father} who taught you and introduced you to so many. I think you owe him {the xbox} that much respect although I can’t see that happening with so many new “upstarts” on board. Anyway, I do wish all the platforms the best of luck and hope everyone is still on “Talking Terms”.

  45. Zeke Pliskin
    May 28th, 2010 at 07:46 | #45

Ah it was a good run. Nice to see a post dedicated to the final arrangements, even if it does take another stealth shot at the console from which the whole project sprung (“deprecated platform”). It’s amazing that the true Xbox “killer app” turned out to be an unofficial open-source media player above any of the games. Team XBMC has done some great work, now it’s time to let this bird fly.

Development is still continuing. Chances are there will be the odd feature here and there in the later Xbox builds that might help XBMC, especially if it’s going to move onto mobile platforms with limited hardware. All the talk about the Xbox version seems to suggest keeping more or less the same strong feature set and hammering out all the bugs, minor core updates, optimising the code as much as possible to get it running the best it can before the door is closed forever. Some more Xbox-specific functions might be added, that’s about it.

I look forward to seeing what Arnova ports from future versions of XBMC, and which new features are introduced in XBMC4XBOX by the new devteam. It’s going to take a while to get the infrastructure for the Xbox-specific version set in place, but when it does I’m sure it’ll be just as good as the community here.

I still use my XBOX with XBMC every day. It is sad to see it come to an end, but I understand. Thank you team for such a long a continued effort in bringing us this groundbreaking platform. I truly believe that XBMC has advanced the area of home entertainment, forging the way for products like HTPCs, WDHD and more. The world is now catching up. Thank you.

  47. May 28th, 2010 at 08:52 | #47

I’ve been thinking of getting an actual PC for my media center needs, and I expect I’ll continue to use XMBC on it, under Linux. I have to say though that hacking around with my old XBOX, which I bought used four years ago for the sole purpose of running XBMC, has been a lot of fun. It’s starting to have hardware problems and will probably go to that great entertainment center in the sky soon enough. From my perspective, XBMC has consistently beaten every other product on the market in both user friendliness and general usefulness, and I look forward to what is to come. Thanks so much!

Ahh, the day I tested XBMP, I must’ve been 14, great memories.
XBMC is the sole reason my XBOX still lies around here, tho I don’t use it anymore :(

I’m still going to try and make it my PVR Frontend for MediaPortal tho, it just seems like a fun project.

What you guys did with XBMP (and later XBMC) for the XBOX was amazing, you turned a regular gaming console, into a multi-purpose entertainmant beast.

Sure, you could run Linux on it, with MPlayer even, but it wasn’t as good / fast / slick / easy as XBMC for the XBOX,
XBMC had and still has it all, take for instance the various sources it takes.
It’s what I like the most, I hope OpenVPN gets ported from Boxee to XBMC real soon, that’d the bomb :)

Anyway, I’ve visited the IRC channels a few times before in the past, and I have been registered on the forums for a few years,
    tho never really saying anything,

I would like to take this moment and thank each and everyone of you, that made XBMP, and evolved it to what it is now!

    Open source at it’s best.
    Keep on rocking it guys!

  50. May 28th, 2010 at 09:41 | #50

So, in other words, I now have no reason to use XBMC any more.

    Fair enough. Goodbye forever.
