Ubuntu 9.10 Released

October 29th, 2009 theuni

ubuntu-logo1As our readers probably know by now, Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) was released today with many new features. For those who are considering making the move, here’s what you need to know as the update relates to XBMC:

Rather than wasting the time and effort required to update the current stable release of XBMC (Babylon) to work with Karmic, we’ve decided to focus on getting a new version out the door.  This means that until the next XBMC release, it is recommended that most users stick with Jaunty.  But there’s no need to panic; despite the fact that it’s taking a bit longer than we had hoped, development is shaping up nicely and the first 9.11 alphas should be rolling out very soon.

If you’re absolutely dying to live on the bleeding edge you could try the svn ppa, though you should NOT expect it to be stable (translation: don’t complain if something’s broken).

Great news guys, i must say i updated to karmic when the rc dropped and kept XBMC and is still working like a dream. It actually works better, before it would freeze my HTPC and i would have to do a hard reset everytime i tried to shut xbmc down to get back to the desktop. Ever since i upgraded to karmic it shuts down just fine and it lets me get to the desktop just fine. Can’t wait for the update, i usually like trying out the alphas, but i think this time i will holdout till a Beta. Great work from you guys must respect to everyone involved in the XBMC project, and once again i am looking forward to the new release…

I am running karmic x64 and x86 on my htpc and two computers, and xbmc is running perfect on all of them. I did an upgrade from jaunty on my htpc, and everything was working right away! :) I am running xbmc-svn from launchpad.

Running XBMC on an old IBM T-42, sadly it stopped working after upgrading to Karmic. Screen flicks in and out, sometimes part of xbmc sometimes all of it but display is never onscreen for longer than a fraction of a second

Will the new version of XBMC (9.11) include support for TV Cards (Live TV / Recorded TV)?

That’s sad news. Ubuntu 9.04 has a pretty buggy Intel stack. The Intel video driver has been through a major restructuring and many bugs came along. For example, I cannot make xbmc work on my Eeebox B202 with Ubuntu 9.04. 9.10 works well with XBMC but ‘official support’ would be a plus.
Anyway I know that the main focus is not there and you’re doing a great work doing regular releases anyway. But maybe in the future it would be useful to synchronize Xbmc releases with Ubuntu releases and integrate directly with the alpha version of Ubuntu.

Upgraded Mythbuntu 9.04 -> 9.10 (32bit). No problem with mythtv but the XBMC broke down totally (cpu constantly 100%, no sound, no video playback..). Tried clean install (64bit) and what do you know. It doesn’t work either. No matter what I choose in audio hardware setup theres no sound through spdif and the whole XBMC hangs once in a while when trying to play a video file.

So my advice is, do not upgrade yet if possible. You’ll save a lot of time and nerves.

Thank you for the hard work and dedication, supporting an ever increasing user base.

Unfortunately, I’m sad to see many of these “users” being true lazy ass who wants everything pre-cooked, for free, and preferably for yesterday. They ask for new features while you work on fixing the stuff, and don’t even say thank you. What is that for an attitude?

Can this work in my NAS as a media server? I ma trying to find a media extender for my NAS.. Mine is a Promise NS4300. This PC based media center works well as far as what I see for sourcing a PC for media.. Any ideas guys for my NAS?

Upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10, and found a conflict between MythTV and XBMC concerning NVidia drivers. MythTV is looking for VDPAU version 190 drivers, XBMC doesn’t like 190 at the moment because of the state of the libxine libraries.

Bottom line, I’ve got an XBMC daily running smoothly on Karmic with Ver 185 NVidia drivers, at the expense of MythTV (for now).
