XBMC 9.11: Alpha2 ready for testing

November 12th, 2009 Team XBMC

The second testing release in the Camelot series has been tagged and is now available for general consumption. The first Alpha was a great success; all of the known issues listed in the previous announcement have been fixed, along with a slew of others. All of those who are currently using Alpha1 are strongly encouraged to update. Though the same warnings still apply: this should be treated as pre-release software and is only for those who don’t mind running into a few bugs.

Thank you to all of you who reported quality bug reports, we closed a whopping 103 tickets between the version tags!

I’ve been a fan of XMBC for years now, but the latest updates are great. As soon as my three Revo’s come in from Newegg I’ll be preparing my friends and families X-Mas presents. Get Engadget and Lifehacker to post more XBMC stories!

i’m really enjoying this new version of xbmc. it’s just taking forever to boot (after you press enter from the grub screen).

Finally my Asrock Ion 330 plays FullHD content fluidly.

VDPAU it for Linux. It is necessary for me DXVA 2 or CUDA for ION 330 (for Windows 7). What to do?

One question. Will openGl be permanantly replaced or there will still be an alternative.

HDtracker there is work for DXVA being done for windows but it will definitly not make it into this stable release because dev only started a month ago on it

Opengl / DirectX :One question. Will openGl be permanantly replaced or there will still be an alternative.

You are still able to compile opengl or even get them from other places but for windows we are trying to replace it because directx has better video driver support for intel/ati.
If you have any issues with the directx version please come tothe forum and discuss why you like opengl better and we are happy to look at makign directx the same

This is only a bug fix version over 9.11 aplha 1 but from the previous stable 9.04 its had a lot of new features that will be announced with the 9.11 final release

Please update XBMC Live with lastest LIRC version 0.8.6 plus upgraded module lirc_it87 so that the media center remote and CIR receiver that comes with the very popular Asus P4-P5N9300 can work out-of-the-box.

kalimero has posted configuration intructions in the forum, some modifications are required

Loads of people have like me bought the Asus P4-P5N9300 as a HTPC just to run XBMC Live.

    November 15th, 2009 at 10:53 | #22

HDtracker, it’s not possible on Windows yet, but once the directX is fully implemented it should work just fine. In the meantime you might have to configure XBMC to use a external player for your x264 stuff, like MediaPlayer Classic HC.

Try deleting (or renaming) your guisettings.xml file so xbmc can create a new one

    Hi,

I’ve had a problem in 9.04 using the mouse in the main menu where you can choose between series, moviez, settings and so on. The scroll function works but I can’t use the mouse to enter the different areas. Though, when using enter on my keyboard I can enter and then there’s no problem using the mouse.

Is this something that is changed in the 9.11 version or should I report it as a bug?

    Regards / Mike

Does .ass/.aas subtitle file works on 9.11 alpha1&2? I tried both of those versions but no luck. :(

  39. November 18th, 2009 at 01:27 | #39

@Mike: Sounds like you’re using a skin that doesn’t support the mouse. This doesn’t magically change with a new version. Use a skin that supports the mouse well if that’s your chosen input device. Examples would be PM3.HD, Basics 101, Rapier, Mediastream_Redux (it’s not perfect though)

@John_Z: yes, they work just fine. Make sure you have subtitles enabled in Settings->Video

Is it possible to have built-in support for Xbox 360 and Xbox 1 controller (gamepad) support in all versions of 9.11 including Live? The pre 9.11 XBMC require a lot of manual setup to get the Xbox 1/360 controller working, which makes it very intimidating and discouraging for the average user who wants to migrate from the Xbox platform to the PC platform and want to maintain the same controller scheme they are familiar and comfortable with.

Works great. Nice work guys! Only one little problem. I always have to pulseaudio –kill before firing up xbmc to get mp3/divx playback to work. Using karmic koala (mythbuntu version).

  42. November 18th, 2009 at 17:57 | #42

I am trying to disable the subtitles but the OSD does not show any option to do that, in the aeon skin the button does not do anything, and I cannot find the option in the pm3.hd skin.

In gui settings.xml I have the subtitles enabled.

How can I disable them from the gui? I am using xbmc on mac 10.6.2

    Thanks!

Hi Jonathan, I’ve tried many times, and .ass files not working for me. XBMC can load the subtitle but not shown on screen( .srt works fine).

Maybe XBMC does not support Non-English(like Chinese/Japanese Text) .ass subtitles?

BTW, I’m using Live Alpha 2 with VDPAU enabled.

    Thanks a lot

    Cheers
    John

    Hello.
    Congratulations for this work!!
I have a little “bugs” (i dont know if are bugs)
I have a littles black flash in the menu, but no seeying a movie.
I cant change the resolution in XBMC. With Babylon version, I could to do this. Windows with 720p and XBMC with 1080p. Now I cant.
Other thing. With others version, i cant change the application with ALT+TAB. This was good for me, because the antivir change the aplication, and with babylon i had not problems. With Camelot the XMBC go down, and i must maximize the aplication.
    Sorry my very poor english

NOTE: The problem with antivir, is when updating and show the window of pop pups,

  45. November 19th, 2009 at 21:54 | #45

@John_Z: Try disabling VDPAU and seeing if they show up then. If they do, it’s probably fixed already since Alpha 2. If not, please post an example ass sub that doesn’t work in XBMC on trac so that others can test. XBMC doesn’t care (or know) what language an ass file is in – we only see it once it’s been rendered to a bitmap.

While I appreciate the work done by the xbmc folks, I find it hard to believe that alpha version of the software is put in the software repository (vs putting it in SVN). I liked xbmc and used it on a regular basis. Not all of us are technically savvy enough to submit bug reports and provide meaningful feedback to the developers. It also prevents me from rolling back the update or compiling it myself. So I guess it is back to mythtv for me. *sigh*

  49. theuni
    November 22nd, 2009 at 15:36 | #49

    @ssmore
This was a mistake, and it will be corrected for the next version. An alpha slipped into stable. Problem is, our databases aren’t backwards compatible so it wasn’t possible to revert users back to Babylon.

    Sorry for the headache.

I tried using the Live version and for some reason after installing it to a portable harddrive, xbmc ask me for login (username & password), which I don’t even know what it is everytime it boots up. However, when I install it on usb flash drives, I don’t get the login prompt. I tried reinstalling several times and it’s the same. Can you remove the login requirements for installing to harddrives?
