XBMC 9.04 (Babylon) Beta 1 released

April 23rd, 2009 Team XBMC

Hot on the heals of the Alpha 1 release, and some 350 code fixes later, the first (and only?) Beta release of XBMC Media Center 9.04 (codename: Babylon) is now available.  New in this Beta 1 release is support for PPC (PowerPC) processors in XBMC for Mac under Mac OS X (Leopard and Tiger), thanks to Team-XBMC’s new developer Beenje.  The feature freeze still applies, and we have also branched a SVN source code tree for release, which means that from here to the end of the month or so we will be only taking well-reviewed fixes in to the final Babylon release.  Please give it a run through its paces and let us know if you have any problems.  The more testing that is done, the more stable XBMC 9.04 will be!

XBMC Media Center 9.04 releases for Windows and all Mac OS X platforms may be found here.

The XBMC for Linux (on Ubuntu) release are available via the PPA on Launchpad as usual.

Note! If updating from an older version of XBMC you will have to scan in your library again.

After using xbmc from day one with evox and up. Well now I am on the wii. And after seeing the iso loader and media players for the wii. The only thing left is to see xbmc on the wii. Please tell us if the xbmc team well over come that challenge. Thank you for your time.

    Thanks for another great XBMC!

BTW: Since it runs fine on all 4 platforms, don’t bother for any other…

You had to go and post a new official release just hours after I went and downloaded an SVN build, didn’t you… ;)

    ##############################
    So, important question..
    ##############################

Since the PS3 CELL processor is based off of a PPC processor, does this mean that we can expect XBMC to run on PS3 Linux?

    Please say “yes”!!

Awesome work! Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 recently was released too. I’m looking forward to a big software upgrade once you guys have Jaunty packages available. I’ll stick with Intrepid until then.

How nice… 9.04 version, trying to steal/share the limelight of Ubuntu 9.04 today.

  14. April 23rd, 2009 at 21:10 | #14

if anything our version numbering is a tribute to ubuntu, certainly not meant as an attempt to piggyback/steal. it’s april and it’s 2009…

This is an outstanding application, and has improved by leaps and bounds over recent versions. Congrats to all xbmc developers on this tremendous accomplishment. I’ve been using alpha1 as my main (and only) application on my htpc. Despite the fact that it’s over 4 years old (albeit with a new $50 graphics card), it plays Blu-Ray back-ups flawlessly, and DVD ISO handling now also works flawlessly.

    You guys rock.

the last svn include fix to 5511 ticket , why its not included in the beta 1 build yet ?

Rock Pounds, there is a pretty thorough thread on the forum about XBMC and the Wii, there still are challenges.

Brandon, unless the PS3 GPU API has been opened, again I would not hold my breath.

I guess it’s probably too early for a live USB/SSD installer? I use XBMC in a live/SSD environment and don’t have access to ubuntu, so it’s mighty hard to test. :)

XBMC Live 9.04 (Babylon) Beta 1 has been released as well yesterday:

Makes it very easy to install XBMC to USB flash drive or a HDD/SSD.

All I can say is wow. I tried 8.10 on Ubuntu on both 64-bit and 32-bit and it seemed like it had some stability issues. Now with version 9.04 I tried the 64-bit version and it seems incredibly stable. I had issues before with video thumbnails and also with it freezing on certain videos, but I haven’t seen 9.04 act like that at all. Amazing! Now I just need a newever video card to take advantage of VDPAU. Thanks!!!!!

Hey. Thanks for this awesome application. Im running with the first alpha release (5. april 2009). I have discovered a sound issue. While playing my .iso-movies it makes a loud noise everytime it change titles/chapters.

Don’t know if you guys are aware of this issue, but it is a pain in the ass! xD

An awesome application with one minor thing missing, that is the ability to skip to a certain point in time in a movie/track. Windows media player has the bar at the bottom you can move, quicktime has the same thing most other players do as well. But for some reason that is missing in XMBC, which for me is the only reason I still use other players when watching a movie, tv show or listening to a track. I want the ability to skip parts without having to fast forward or make chapters in a movie or show.

I congratulate you, it’s a great media center.

I would like the PictureFlow or PhotoFlow behave like CoverFlow for ipodtouch or windows media center, whereas their use is transparent, which shows no level up or coverart on each song’s album in coverflow view and also to function as a jukebox as the program AlbumPlayer.

As for the photographs, as a view PictureFlow / Photoflow or windows media center, where to access the photo gallery showing all the directories, and it is possible to put labels.

Already finished my letter to Santa Claus jeje

Remember anything more, he, to consider the interface and gestures for touch screens, such as Asus and MSI marks.

    Use a translator, sorry.
    Saludos.

Again, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE to make feature suggestions!
    http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=What_is_XBMC_%26_What_Can_it_Do%3F#Where_can_I_suggest.2Frequest_a_new_feature_or_function_to_be_implemented_into_XBMC.3F

You can log a NEW feature/function request in our RFE Request Feature Tracking System, (we recommend you register and login on our Trac tracking-system, if you are already registered on on the XBMC Community Forum then know it is the same login so no need to re-register). Just make sure that you first remember to search for existing “Feature Requests” before logging a new request! You should take note that we guesstimate that 99% of all new requests XBMC users post have already been requested before so it is imperative that you search thoroughly! You may also post a copy of your suggestion in the feature-suggestion section of our community-forums if you want it open for discussion, however, again you must search there too before you can post, (we do not enjoy reorganising duplicate posts). Please respect that your request only counts as a suggestion, there’ s no guarantee that it will implemented soon or ever. Known that almost all users think their own ideas is the most important, and a very common comment is: “if you only add these features then XBMC will be perfect for me”. Note! Only one feature per RFE Request and Forum Thread is allowed (for easier manageability).

Does this include the fixes for the intel vsync tearing problems? I’ve always had to use Jester’s builds but it would be nice to see them built in.

I could not get this to work on my power pc mac. It says that it should, but doesn’t. Is there something Im doing wrong?

  34. June 5th, 2009 at 07:50 | #34

like racers (comment 35) I cannot get this to run on my PPC mac mini (OS X 10.5.6). It might be a simple line of code held over from the previous version that prevented attempts to run on PPC architecture that needs to be altered/removed:

‘You cannot open the application “XBMC” because it is not supported on this architecture’

  35. June 11th, 2009 at 20:35 | #35

if you get the errormessage “… is not supported on this architecture” you downloaded the wrong version. download for ppc architecture is not linked on the website and have to be done on http://sourceforge.net/projects/xbmc/
