XBMC 9.04 (Babylon) Alpha 1 released

April 5th, 2009 Team XBMC

Just a quick note to let you all know that Alpha 1 builds of XBMC 9.04 are now available.  New in this release, among many things, is experimental hardware acceleration on Linux via VDPAU for recent NVIDIA graphics chipsets care of motd2k, reworked internal path system to remove dependency on legacy drive letters (meaning all python scripts and plugins need to be updated to work properly), as well as a major bug-fixes for DVD-Video playback care of davilla and phi – so finally those of you on Mac OS X should have working DVD playback too! As usual, many, many bug-fixes for other issues have made their way in, and many more are on the way. Please give it a good going over and let us know if you have any problems.  The more testing that’s done, the more stable XBMC 9.04 will be!

The Mac OS X and Apple TV release may be found here .

The Windows release may be found here .

The Linux release will be available via the PPA shortly.

Great work everyone! Are there any special considerations for upgrading from 8.10 (changes in database format, etc.)?

    April 5th, 2009 at 04:38 | #3

@Anand: You should be able to install the new version without issue, and your db should be automatically updated as needed. I can’t guarantee it’ll be smooth sailing, however, so I suggest taking a backup of your userdata folder before updating to ensure you have it should you need to switch back. Let us know on the forums if you have any problems.

I found a major problem with subtitles!
    The tests:
In 8.10 Atlantis subtitles are OK.
but in 9.04 no subtitles at all!

    Win XP+SP3,
    Same avi-file, same subtitle(.srt) file.
    I also tried with ANSI, UTF-8, Unicode (Big/Little Indian), .txt,.utf8,utf-8 -file extetntions,….

P.S. The subtitle files successfully copied in \XMBC\cache\subtitle.srt

    Please Help!

This is not the place to post bug reports. Post them on the forums for discussion, and/or on trac along with everything one needs to reproduce.

I am no more able to use Altgr+\ to display “XMBC (Window)” in fullscreen. I get a black fullscreen but the “XMBC (Window)” keeps the same. (Vista Sp1, Nvidia Quadro 140M)
    Bug?

Its obvious xbmc is awesome, but I just wish you could integrate tv tuners with it. MythTv + XBMC would equal awesome!!!

    Hey jmarshall,

Finally finished listening to Floss Weekly episode 57 (was sitting in my queue for a while). There was an Nvidia based Atom board that was mentioned in the podcase using Linux/Nvidia VDPAU. What was this motherboard/processor combo. It’s killing me. I’m currently using a GF8200 based board AMD 4850e and I am about to try out 9.04 Alpha 1 and see if I can finally get away from Windows/MediaPortal and totally go over to Linux for my 1080p HTPC.

I am very interested in finding the Nvidia based mini-itx atom board for me to make my HTPC awesome, and run 1080p with all free software (XBMC + Ubuntu 9.04).

Thanks a lot jmarshall, I’ve been using XBMC since I modded my first XBOX in 2005, I now own 7 original XBOX’s soeley due to XBMC, version 2 was awesome in it’s day. But 1080p content has forced me to focus on making low-end HTPC’s to play all my content.

I also have numerous family & friends hooked on XBMC, everyone loves the fact that it “Just Works”.

Awesome Program and thanks a lot.

The experimental hardware acceleration, does anyone know if that will work on the appletv? If so would it enable the appletv to playback the 720p mkv files you get in recent bittorrents – 8.04 won’t…

Also, how do you install the apple tv alpha?

@HwyXingFrog – the board you are reffering to is the nVidia ION platform, an Atom 330 with geforce 9400 onboard. I believe these are still not available to anyone but developers/manufacturers/reviewers.

I am also quite interested in this board, and hope it works better with XBMC Live than the Asus 8200 based board I recently tried. No matter what I do lately, no optical out seems to work in XBMC Live, this can be a drag.

I use Windows XP professional 64bit…. any hopes for the 64 bit community???…:)))

Will there be a 64bit Xbmc media center?…

  25. April 12th, 2009 at 02:14 | #25

XBMC should work just fine on 64bit machines using the released binary. There are no plans for a purely 64bit only release.

I installed 9.04 and I am totally amazed by the clear and easy structure and the simple customization of the browsing appearance at each level (full list, list, media info, cover flow etc.) Great work!

I also love the great integration of last.fm and other nice plug-ins like Youtube, Apple Movie Trailers etc. I used Microsoft Vista Media Center for a long time and I would love to immediatly fully switch to XBMC…

There are some little improvments I would love to see:

1.) Fully native MCE remote compatiblity without extra software installs. “Up” and “down” and “ok” buttons work fine, but not functions like “back” or “play”, “skip forward” etc.

2.) I have my DVD collection managed my MyMovies (www.mymovies.dk) which is pretty a standard application for all DVD enthusiasts and there is no integration of XBMC to get the library information from the MyMovies database. Would be great to have this. I tried to let XBMC to scan my DVD folders but it works pretty bad. Basically it converts the title images and description to english and also makes many mistakes in recognizing the movies (wrong titles, wrong images, description etc.)

3.) I love to use IPTV. However many providers limit their offering to US only. I therefore have still a classic TV-Card (analogue) in my HTPC which works without problems in Vista Media Center. So it would be nice to have a real “Live-TV” integration with TV-Guide like in Vista MediaCenter.

I have problem with rewind and forward “function”, the screen was frozen… So, maybe the video codec is not the best (if it changed)…

I’m so glad that stop, play, next and previous are now working on my Apple TV with Logitech Harmony remote! It was a bit of a drawback coming from an XBOX. So thanks!

Again, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE to make feature suggestions!

Also, the “feature freeze” means no new features for now.
