XBMC 'Atlantis' Beta 1 released – now serving all common platforms
Team-XBMC is proud to announce the first cross-platform Beta version of XBMC media center for Linux, Mac OS X (Leopard and Tiger), Windows, and Xbox, in preparation for the upcoming stable release of XBMC, code named ‘Atlantis’. There are three important news items associated with this release:
1. The first item that is new in this release is the brand new skin “PM3.HD”, a high-definition tribute to Project Mayhem III, which will be gracing screens as the default skin on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. Xbox users can, of course, choose to use this skin if they wish as well, and the original Project Mayhem III skin is still packaged with Beta 1 for those who prefer the old-school look. This is in addition to the already awesome selection of skins available for XBMC.
2. The second item is the initial release of “XBMC Live“, a bootable CD which gives users the opportunity to try XBMC on their computer, without touching their harddrive. In addition, XBMC Live allows installation of XBMC, complete with an operating system, onto a USB flash memory sticks for a permanent, fast booting, dedicated set-top-box style installation of XBMC. XBMC Live is designed to support Microsoft’s MCE Remote and USB receiver out-of-the-box.
3. The third item is that the XBMC for Mac release now has initial support for integrating iTunes and iPhoto media into XBMC. For more information on this, please read this developers blog entry; “iTunes and iPhoto integration in XBMC“. The Mac release of Beta 1 also comes bundled with a bonus skin for XBMC, and that is MediaStream by Team Razorfish, (this skin can, of course, be downloaded and installed on all XBMC platforms, like all other XBMC skins).
You should know that XBMC ‘Atlantis’ is still in a feature freeze, the final release of which is scheduled for October, and we really need your help in order to make ‘Atlantis’ as stable as possible. We encourage all users to download and use this Beta release in preference to using SVN or the Alpha builds, and test it thoroughly, reporting all bugs to our tracking system.
We would also appreciate any and all assistance in making sure that the online manual and FAQ are as up to date as possible. Both the online manual and FAQ are wiki based so just register and request write access if you wish to contribute. In addition, translations and updates of XBMC language files is another area where help would be appreciated.
Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the XBMC community for the great feedback in terms of bug reports and usability suggestions. Without your assistance, we would never be able to make XBMC as solid and stable as it is right now.
Here are a few teaser screenshots from the new PM3.HD skin:
Now go, download XBMC ‘Atlantis’ Beta 1 and enjoy!
Yours sincerely / Team-XBMC
Wow!!! God job guys, brilliant! Can’t wait to play with this one. Thank you very much!
:)
Looking forward to tinkering with this, will T3CH be releasing xbox binaries still?
You guys rock..
@kambei, we have no control over T3CH, the source code revision in the SVN used for Atlantis Beta 1 is tagged so anyone who has the necessary software tools to compile XBMC for Xbox builds will be able to make a Beta 1 build.
Great job as always guys, look forward to tinkering and posting back!
PM3.HD is a very nice surprise! Can’t wait to get this on my Ubuntu box :)
I thought Plex (formerly OSXBMC) was already the OS-X port of XBMC – What is the relationship between these two projects?
Plex is a fork of XBMC. The saga of the split is well documented on the Plex site.
@Chris, no, Plex is a software fork of XBMC for Mac (look up “software fork” on wikipedia for its meaning), XBMC is the original software, they are two separate project worked by two separate development teams, some cherry picking code copying between the project does still takes place though, (Boxee is another fork of XBMC that is also available for the Mac and some cherry picking code copying between XBMC and Boxee also take place).
Short story is that Elan Feingold, who then as a member of Team-XBMC was the one who originally started porting XBMC to Mac OS X, he then decided to leave Team-XBMC, (due to reasons I will not go into here), and go out on his own and start a his own new project based on XBMC for Mac, and he named that project Plex (or Plexapp). Plex was never formally named “OSXBMC”, it was only referred to as OSXBMC by its users because Elan previously had a blog on osxbmc.com in which he posted news of the progress on his porting development.
I will not go into any more details as it has already been discussed to death and you will find more if you search for “Plex” in our XBMC for Mac forum, please go there if you absolutely feel the need to discuss it further than this.
Happy birthday to me! No really – its my birthday and I get a beta XBMC!!! (Been waiting for a new stable release along time!)
I just install the latest SVN from T3CH and now this comes out?!!? I can’t wait for it to be compiled and released!
Amazing…just waiting paciently for October! :D Tried it and it’s a little heavy…
You are really awesome. Great job!!!
Great! If it had been any better, I would have to go and get a clean pair of pants! Now, what to do to pass the time until the release of the stable version?
When are we going to see boxes on shelves with this installed :-)
where can we see the changelog ? from the alpah to the beta
what have been change ?
thanks devs!!! i love your mediacenter soft :)
regards from spain
This is a pleasant surprise………can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Gorgeous. My respect for the XBMC team knows no limits.
The realtime changelog feed is available on XBMC Trac:

The beta 1 is there already?! Wowsers, that’s much quicker then i ever expected! Respect for the team and the fantastic XBMC. Can’t live without it!
Brilliant. I’ve tried a couple of the previous builds on Vista and it was brilliant. My old chipped xboxes have been faithful media players for years now, it will be great to just use the same interface on my PC’s too. (was planning on picking up an old mac mini to replace one of the xboxes, but now the XBMC comes in a USB bootable version supporting an off the shelf remote, I’ll probably just build an atom based uATX PC!! < NZ$300 if I don’t need an internal HDD. 8)
Cheers XBMC team, you rock!
You guys are the roxorz. Been rollin with XBMC since it first came out. Can’t wait to give this a try. Been meaning to break out a media server. My config will probly be a linux box that boots up and automatically runs Atlantis. Tnx.
I notice you say the XBMC Live version supports the Microsoft Media Center receiver and remote control. Does this mean XBMC running under Windows and Mac and Linux, will also support using the same receiver and remote?
I am currently running XBMC Atlantis on a Mac mini and have a Microsoft Media Center receiver and remote so this would be a lot better than the Apple remote.
Awesome job, this is the product every other media center software should be put up against. I do it and sure as heck, NOTHING beats it.
@Gamester: Feingold, not Fieldgold. The latter actually makes more sense, if you think about it, but what can I do?
Absolutely HOT! Thank you for the hard work!
THANKS! THANKS! THANKS! XBMC is the best media center solution that I know…..
I love XBMC on my xbox and in the next time I’m hopefully to build a media pc based on the new XBMC…..
Greetings from Germany
Congrats on the release guys, from everyone over at meedios.com :)
Thanks zag!
@Elan, sorry for the wrong spelling Elan (Feingold), my bad :/
what Revision Number is the Beta 1 based off of 15635? i’m looking in the SVN for a TAG saying its the Beta like said above but i dont see it anywhere the last commit is remove old files
hack_kid; it sits rite in (tags/XBMC_Atlantis_beta1-linux-osx-win32) based on 15610
Great stuff! Awesome job by you team xbmc guys. It really shows your experience when it comes to making this stable after the feature freeze.
Spectacular! I’ve been planning on getting my HD tv later this year and it will be great to build a small PC to play higher resolution formats. I was dreading having to get something other than my XBMC to play my media.
Looking great everyone! I’ll be downloading to test it out.
wikked!!!
Am I not mistaken that there hasn’t been (to the source code for the Xbox) a release of Beta 1? If there has – what is it’s SVN tag?
Can’t seem to get atlantis to access my external hdd where my videos and music are stored… that needs to be fixed… if I click on the drive in xbmc it takes me back to my settings\application data\xbmc
Hi guys,
is there a way to run xbmc on ps3 throught the linux version ?
if not yet, will ps3 will one day be supported ?
thx
Been loading Atlantis onto my Xbox today and i can only say… this is the best media center ever! it´s only getting better and better!!!!! *thumbs*
A word to the Swedish part of the XBMC team…
Bra jobbat grabbar, det märks att det är svenskar som håller i projektet, kvalitet !!!!!
Is it even out for the Xbox? Looks like the Xbox code hasn’t been folded in yet.
Xbox is being merged as we speak. It’ll be tagged in a couple of hours from now. I was away from the net when the team chose to release (maybe I should go away more often!) ;)
that PS3 question is a very good one indeed but i think htere is something called hypervios that keeps us from accessing more ram etc
Top job guys, always loved XBMC and now on pc ( WOW ). Just would like to ask if there are any chances of adding tv support? Would be a great feature and I could kiss mce goodbye forever.
I tried the beta 1 and it’s stable enough for me. Guys you rules, it’s the best media player in the world! It’s awesome what you did to xbox. Keep up the good work…
AWE. SOME.
!!
I have been waiting for this ever since I first used XBMC. Many thanks to all the developers for their hard work.
Another example of open-source and community coming together and producing something amazing!
No comments to express my satisfaction.
When I first saw XMBC last April I was so amazed that I run to buy two Xboxs from eBay!!!
Your work is as great as you people!
Amaziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg!!!!!.Thanks for all from Spain
