XBMC 11.0 - Eden

March 24th, 2012 natethomas

It’s been over a year in the works and today we are excited to announce that XBMC 11.0 is finally ready and available for download. You can find XBMC 11.0 here.

xbmc-eden-announce
XBMC 11.0 Milestones include Addon Rollbacks, vast improvements in Confluence (the default skin), massive speed increases via features like Dirty-region rendering and the new JPEG decoder, a simpler, better library, movie set scraping, additional protocol handling, better networking support, better handling of unencrypted BluRay content and structures, adjustable display refresh rate in OSX (to match the already available feature in Windows and Linux), AirPlay support, an upgraded weather service with geoip lookup, and much, much more. Check out the highlights in the summarized changelog.

XBMC Eden

The new Confluence

In addition to our many software improvements, we’ve increased our reach in the realm of hardware support since Dharma was released. Eden marks the first in-sync stable release for the Apple TV2iPad, and other iOS devices. We’ve vastly improved the method by which we handle input, including heavily upgrading JSON-RPC support, making remote control support much, MUCH simpler in Windows, and enabling unique methods of device communication with hardware. And now even AMD devices are supported for GPU video decoding in Linux to some extent, thanks to the inclusion of VAAPI.

Beyond XBMC 11 for Windows, Linux, OSX, and iOS, we are also happy to announce XBMCbuntu Final.

XBMCbuntu is very similar to past versions of XBMC Live. By default, the user boots directly into XBMC, and if he/she chooses, he or she will never see the underlying OS. However, unlike Live, XBMCbuntu is now built upon a full LXDE desktop environment, which has a web browser (Chromium) with a fully updated (and updatable) version of Flash built-in and a GUI package manager ready to install and update all of the normal Ubuntu programs a typical Linux user might use. The user may now toggle between XBMC, which auto-starts, and a normal desktop if he or she chooses. And, perhaps most exciting for many users, XBMC will now be upgradeable, both from command line and from the GUI package manager, without fear of crashing the XBMC experience.

Naturally, those users who do not want to see the desktop will never need to. When you boot your computer, you will be booted directly into the XBMC homescreen, just as you are right now. The only clear difference is the new power underneath the hood. Those users who have already installed the Beta version of XBMCbuntu can upgrade to final using the apt-get upgrade commands.

There are truly an incredible number of updates and improvements between Dharma and Eden. But don’t take our word for it. Download XBMC 11.0 Eden now.

If you’re using mysql for your database backend, you have to grant access for it to create a new upgraded database:

Can anyone share the md5 hashes of the downloads? I’m not sure on my xbmcbuntu download… opens in winrar without error… but I don’t want to waste XBMC bandwidth and download it again!

I’ve made a torrent for XBMCbuntu Final: http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/7131387
Those who already downloaded it can help seeding.

Looks like I’ll be staying with Dharma. Eden has added nothing significant for windows users, but has broken plenty. setting refresh to match video does nothing which results in very noticeable stuttering on all video, “-d xx” no longer works for delayed startup(results in freeze on splash), video lag inconsistent with all framerates….just to name a couple.
I do appreciate the hard work for this free software and a fan of XBMC, but not another blind cheerleader.

Great job as usual. But I must say I miss the old Dharma Live that I ran from my USBstick. Now when I run XBMCbuntu from the same stick the menues are slower, it completely locks up on me sometimes. For the future it would be nice with a “regular” Live release once again :P

    @Demos v
We have tons of Windows users who’ve been using the Betas and who have already used the final version, as well as a bunch of Windows devs. They’re not having any issues like that at all. Sounds like your setup is bonked somehow. Post about this on the XBMC forums and we’ll get it straighten out. There’s a ton of great improvements in v11, and it’s harder to upgrade when you have to jump two version numbers (if you’re just waiting for v12).

    @Demos v

I have the exact same video issues since RC1. Stuttering, lag etc. Especially when playing content from my server.
    Going back to Dharma also.

    March 26th, 2012 at 00:26 | #18

@demos & Frank – I’m running 2 Win7 boxes flawlessly, no stutters, smooth fluid playback. And yes, for Windows users there’s an unofficial patch for bitstreaming DTS-MA/TrueHD. I’m getting pretty much the Holy Grail of HTPC, and look forward to the rollout of some of the upcoming features like the FFMPeg update, AE, thumbnails in the texture db, etc.

I think you’ll find your issues addressed in the forums, as well as info on what hardware works well and what doesn’t. Eden has so many improvements over Dharma – you’re missing out.

    Walt :
re: What is the product ?
I’ve spent years using linux and other apps.
Developers can get really removed from the reality
of their products. I don’t spend a lot of time in “media”.
I do other stuff. So if you’re interested in marketing only to
guys that already have 4 media players on their boxes,
    have at it !
I no longer visit web pages of most tech product sites.
I can’t afford to take the time and play “which 10 clicks can
get me the info I need”. Or how far on this 30 page long
front page do I have to scroll to find something.
I go and ask people what they’re using and why. And I ignore
all but the product sites troubleshooting web pages.

I’m already working on a new website, more focused on the average joe and not techies, which will have everything you mentioned – thus having a summary of the features on the home page and so on. There is already a first draft, but time is limited atm, so it might take a while until it’s finished.

    Guten Tag,

    Ps
Ihr Programm Multisprachige ist. Bei den Problemen nutzen Sie Google-translator…

Used to using a 360 wireless controller on Dharma, and even after the controller would shut itself off, I could hit the “home” button, it would communicate with receiver and then let me control XBMC again. This feature is no longer working in Eden :( When the controller shuts off while watching a movie, if I restart it after a few minutes it’ll be recognized by XBMC and let me control things, but if I wait lets say 30 minutes or more and restart the controller, I can’t control anything in XBMC. Obviously there’s a time limit for communicating with Eden via the wireless controller. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

First.. nice Work, big Thanks to the Team. Eden looks good and its very fast on my Zotac Zbox.
I´ve used openelec the last half year i thought about take a look on xbmcbuntu again. Sorry to say that the same old Bug still exists like in the old xbmc life versions. I talk about SMB Shares. I got all my Media Sources on a ASUS NAS with WHS. I access this NAS from PC,Tablet,Boxee without trouble. The NAS is connected over Gbit Lan with XBMC.
So, when i try to add a Source, i put the Share user and Password in the dialog Box from Xbmc. Click on OK and nothing happend. I am Back on the same Window without Password set. I think its the same old story that xbmc has no enough rights to mount this share no matter what i type in the user pw field. I will try to manual alter sources.xml and try this out, but thats not how it should work. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction ? Thanks

Figured out the controller issue! You can’t have a usb mouse enabled when the controller turns off otherwise XBMC defaults to the mouse and disregards the controller. Just disable the mouse in the INPUT settings and the controller can turn off and on and still communicate with XBMC no problem.
