Google Summer of Code 2012: Update

March 18th, 2012 natethomas

We are pleased and excited to announce to everyone that we have been accepted as an official GSOC mentor organization this year.

Google-Summer-of-Code-2012-And-XBMCFrom now until the 26th, we would like to encourage all our faithful student users (and other interested students) to visit our GSOC Ideas Page, review some of the ideas we think might be good ones, and then feel free to provide input on any ideas you may have in the Student Project Proposal area. Alternatively, feel free to jump into the #XBMC IRC room on Freenode and chat about any project you’d love to cover.

From March 26th to April 6th, we encourage any interested students to apply at the GSOC home page to work with XBMC. After that, we’ll notify applicants whether we get to work with each other according to the GSOC schedule.

All of us at Team XBMC are looking forward to getting some good work done this summer, and we’d love for you all to work with us!

    I have read your proposal with rising interrest. Just what the doctor ordered! To me it seems like the logical next step in the evolution of XBMC and eagerly awaited by me.

    My five cents are these. I would suggest to go over your proposal once more. There are nagging syntax errors in some sentences. “… would also make other media devices, which is not power by XBMC, able to use said features” as a for instance. I would also suggest to shorten your sentences. It will make for even better reading/understanding and lead to (possible) acceptance of your proposal.

    Good luck with the GSOC 2012!

    Having read the proposed ideas, I so root for Custom library categories to happen! :)

    what I would like to see is a way of auto deleting shows. Example. Colbert Report, downloaded daily but should only be kept in the folder for a week or 2. I would like a way to set a certain show to auto delete both the library entry and the actual content after a preset amount of time.

    Not that I expect this to be released any time soon, but the one thing that takes up all my time nowadays is sorting my tv shows & movies into folders so it can be scraped properly in xbmc…

    I would like to see some sort of built-in plugin that automatically moves my video files from my ‘download’ folder into the correct folder in XBMC. I’ve seen external tools to do this, none of which are exactly n00b friendly or something my parents could use. What I would like is something I can setup on my parent’s house, and than forget about it.

    Say for example if I’ve got the latest episode of The Apprentice S18E01, I would like it to automatically move the file (and create the folder if necessary) to “\\TV Shows\The Apprentice\Season 18\”

    I don’t want to have to config the settings for EVERY tv show since this would be a time consuming process, I would like something that I configure for ALL TV Shows, something that I configure for ALL Movies, and the file sorting follows the this process all the time. However, I’m sure some users would want an ‘expert’ mode to do so if they wanted to, so I’m sure that is something that can be looked into as well. Also if it could also move any supplemental files like subtitles that goes with the main video file, that would be a bonus.

    Considering that there is a number or chances that a movie or tv show may not be scraped properly, an ‘undo’ feature or a confirmation window when it is not sure what to do is something that can be looked into as well.

    Perhaps this can be integrated into XBMC’s auto-update library feature? That way if it finds a movie, and if it is 100% sure that this is the correct show or movie, it can auto-move it into the correct folder. If it is not 100% sure of the title (for example, if the TV show name returns multiple results), a dialog box will ask — which show is this from?

    I also want the option to have it set to run ‘on demand’ or upon start-up if possible.

    Whatever the solution is, it should be simple in the fact that either it is something I could instruct my parents to do or I could set it up for them and forget about it.

    I realize the more I think about this, the more complex it is. There should be a way to take what is ‘already’ in my TV/movie library and change the folder structure to ensure that it follows the ‘new’ format, to ensure that everything is standardized, and ensure that the library knows that the file location has changed.

    If I had this feature, my life would be so much simpler, I could get home after the TV shows are downloaded and just watch my shows without having to spend 5-10 minutes each day making sure everything is scraped properly.

    @Derek

    Check out the renamer it is pretty simple to set up and it does everything you want. I have it set as a scheduled task to run each day at 6pm and it renames all shows in my download folder then moves them to the right directory

    What happened to the idea of rigging up XBMC to record digital television? I thought this was a previous GSoC goal.

    @Csimbi
    it is now, since today, out anytime via git pull compile.

    Awaiting for decent xbmclive releases that actually install and work with popular platforms…

    Should be a goal of this gsoc apparently its not important anymore and xbmcbuntu is way not the same.

    @Derek
    If you want I have a python script that move and reorder all data from a Incoming folder to the correct tv series folder. The only activity to configure is insert the source and target folder.
    Now, I user cron to run the script every 30 min so my Mom not have to do anything.
    After copy, the script provide automatic upgrade of the library.
    In the past, I have half idea to integrate the script with xbmc bat I don’t have any idea where to start to develop a plug in for darma!
    For more information, please contact me at linefinc@users.sourceforge.net

    What happened to the integration of DTV into XBMC? I thought that was a previous GSoC project?

    Love the idea for the server, an Added Idea is for the Server setup to have a minimal GUI (Similar to Ember Media Manager). And You could edit the artwork for items through this GUI (Like Movie Set Thumbs and Fanart)

    For Movies, look at CouchPotato
    For TV Shows, Look at SickBeard.

    These Programs do what you ask, and runs in the background
