XBMC 11.0: Eden Beta 3 available now [Updated]

February 9th, 2012 natethomas

takeiXBMCAs we continue moving toward the release of Eden, more and more fixes are slotting into place. With Beta 3, we’ve fixed playlist issues, altered some misbehaving Library buttons, provided a little more control over the way movie sets are scraped, and cleaned up numerous other small bugs.

On top of the many bug fixes though, we are pleased to officially announce the first beta of XBMCbuntu. With this beta release, we have chosen to slightly shift the focus of the pre-built XBMC Live install. In the past, XBMC Live was optimized for a pure set-top box experience. In the switch to XBMCbuntu, we are pushing to a more traditional ‘buntu approach that emphasizes first trying and then ultimately installing XBMC onto the local machine.

There are many benefits to this approach. In particular, XBMC is now built upon a full LXDE desktop environment, which has a web browser (Chromium) with a fully updated (and updatable) version of Flash built-in and a GUI package manager ready to install and update all of the normal Ubuntu programs a typical Linux user might use. The user may now toggle between XBMC, which auto-starts, and a normal desktop if he or she chooses. And, perhaps most exciting for many users, XBMC will now be upgradeable, both from command line and from the GUI package manager, without fear of crashing the XBMC experience.

Naturally, those users who do not want to see the desktop will never need to. When you boot your computer, you will be booted directly into the XBMC homescreen, just as you are right now. The only clear difference is the new power underneath the hood.

For those users experienced in installing XBMC Live, be prepared for a newer, easier graphical installer. Your downloadable Disc Image may be found here. The installer still needs a bit of polish, most notably the slideshow panels, but we will be sure to brush up the cosmetics in time for final release.

And for those users of Eden Beta1 and Beta2, as always, your downloads may be found here. Once again, remember this is Beta software, and bugs are likely to appear. Feel free to let us know how your experience is going in the comments below.

Update:

With Beta 2, XBMC has begun automatically scanning for Movie Collections when using the default movie scraper. With Beta 3, XBMC continues to scan for those collections, but no longer displays Collections by default. To enable Movie Collections, visit System -> Video -> Library, and enable “Group movies in sets.”

Is there a way to control the sets? Toy Story 3 does not group with Toy Story and Toy Story 2, and I’m sure I’m having a few others issues with the sets, mostly to do with ordering (would be ideal to be able to tell it the order within the set).

I’m having similar issues… Anyone got any luck fixing this?

indeed XBMC’s general attachment to files names is a pain – it would be much better if the logical entity (TV Series S01E01) rather than the filename (tvserries.101.mkv or whatever) was the reference for things (meaning if a better quality verson of something is downloaded by sickbeard or whatever, it doesn’t pop up as unwatched again, for example).

    +1

Would also make things a lot easier if one was to move a file to another location, for example from a Show Name/Episode format to Show Name/Season/Episode.

I have a movie collection of over 700 movies and I use a handheld remote. I works like a charm and I threw my mouse and keyboard away. The remote is much faster in finding a movie. I can choose the starting letter of the movie by using the number keys, I can scroll down whole pages by using the channel+/- keys and I can access all the functions I want by mapping them to the right keys on the remote by simply editing the keymap. I don’t want a mouse on my coffee table, I want ONE remote. I chose the logitech harmony 555 and haven’t looked back. Two clicks, the tv is on and on the right channel, the receiver is on and on the right channel, the htpc is on. A couple of more clicks and I have found the right movie, all the functions (such as subtitle delay, next subtitle, audio track and so on) accessible by one click. IMO Remote > Mouse every day! But then again, thats why there are options :)

With the new interface, is there going to be support for a nas interface? I’m currently streaming my files from a xtreamer pro, which allows me to ‘drag and drop’ from a pc on the network, through windows explorer. I’d like to see this function intergraded into XBMC, so I can install the hard drives and run my media through a single unit.

I installed Eden Beta 3 last night and everything seems to be working great, except for the life of me I can’t get hdmi sound out at all. I am getting menu sounds, but that’s about it. I searched in the forums and didn’t see anything. I had to switch my other hd back in running Dharma.

This is running on a Zotac ID11, so any help at all would be very helpful. I’d love to use this as my daily xbmc, but this is a sticking point :) So far what I saw, I love. Can’t wait for final!

If anyone else wanted to know, to get to the LXDE desktop, just exit XBMC and switch to XBMCbuntu in the dropdown menu and login again – took me a half hour to figure this out.

GREAT ADVICE HERE! Took me more than this time to find this post. Looking forward to the wiki updates for this version. Great job!

I installed Eden Beta 3 on my Asrock ION 330, no problem with graphical interface (hdmi on a samsung fullhd 37”).
The only problem is that on LXDE desktop when I try to update-upgrade through synaptic it tell me I have a lot of broken packages and unsolved dependencies.

I’m assuming your running XBMCbuntu? If so, you have to run “sudo alsamixer” in a terminal window and un-mute the HDMI outputs (they might show up as S/PDIF) This can be done via SSH or by hitting exit in XBMC and logging back in to the XBMCbuntu interface and launching a terminal window.

I’m trying Beta 3 on Windows 7. XBMC seems to be downsampling all my movie and TV posters. I have to go to “get thumb” on the info screen and then select “local thumb” to get the original hi-res poster to display. Is this normal for XBMC? I’m pretty sure it didn’t happen with Dharma.

Is there a convenient way to search in Eden? An Add-On that helps? I use a keyboard and mouse and sometimes my Android phone. However; I have a lot of movies and need to be able to search quickly. I’m thinking a search filter…I hit the button and as I type the movies that don’t meet the criteria filter out. What does everyone else use to search quickly? Everything I have tried in Dharma is incredibly clunky

What OS are you running? Are you booting a new OS install with the new Eden? Have you set the default sound output of the OS to be HDMI? Have you installed the HDMI drivers for your OS that’s running Eden?

I’m running Eden on Win7-64 bit on the Zotac AD10 and HDMI is working great for me.

    Roger :

The other challenge, previously unmentioned, was the XBMC tends to assume a single user. If anybody in the house watches a movie, it marks it as watched. If anybody changes the View from Thumbnails to FanArt, the next user is impacted. If you share a common media library on your network, each room installation needs to be reconfigured separately (you can’t make a change to any movie info on the master server and have it reflected in all your installations). If you want to “force” XBMC to use corrected settings, you have to clutter the movie directory with nfo and tmb files, instead of hiding the files in a custom subdirectory. This takes it from “awesome potential” to merely a personal GUI interface for your personal movie collection.

As to the shared database. you could set up mySql on one of the machines and point the other installations to that one machine. You loose watched/unwatched status per room, but gain the ability to stop in one room and resume in another (wish it did this with pause).

As other’s have mentioned, you could use profiles for personalized views per person. I don’t personally use this, but I can see how it would be nice (only me and my roommate and she could care less how it looks as long as it works). And on top of that, my totally non-technical roommate picked up the remote and had no issues whatsoever using it. I barely have to ever help her with it. Granted, I only have ~100 movies (split into sets for easier browsing by title) but over 160 shows with over 12,000 episodes.

I think you’ll find if you reprogram your remote as others have mentioned and given some training (5-30 minutes max), most people can use it no problem. Even my mom uses it when she comes over no problem (in her 60s). As a matter of fact, I personally find that people are MORE confused with the keyboard than the remote, but that is just my experience.

Anything i can do to solve this without having to dump the database and start over with the library again??

If this is still an issue in Beta 3 I will be holding off installing. For beta 2 I had to completely rebuild my library in order to get it to install using MysQL for the same exact problem above (coming from Darma):

21:05:39 T:3952 ERROR: SQL: Undefined MySQL error: Code (1060)
Query: ALTER TABLE settings ADD VerticalShift float

this i a pain with over 100 movies, thousands of songs, and over 12,000 episodes spanning 160 shows. I may try to install again and see if this works, but this really should be fixed for core functionality like this.

Settings > Videos > Library > Group Movies in Sets

thanks for the tip, although I don’t why they put it there and not in the scraper settings would seem more logical to me any way :-)

I have to disagree, while scraping for Movie set data should be in the scraper, displaying it is not handled by the scraper, but by XBMC. This is far more logical than me than your approach. Just my $.02

To any Linux users with no HDMI sound, hopefully this helps:

CTRL+ALT+F2 to get to a login prompt (or use a terminal prog if you’re running X), and log in.
    # aplay -L
(This lists the available sound devices on the system)
Choose one of these devices that looks like it might be your hdmi, and test it…
    #speaker-test -c2 -D
    (In my case, it’s ’speaker-test -c2 -D hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=0′)
This should play sound through the left and right speaker (don’t worry if you’re 5.1 — this is just a test)

If this didn’t work, try a different device that was listed with ‘aplay -L’.
If this does work, change your audio output device in XBMC to custom, and enter the device name you found to work. In my case, I have the main and passthrough devices both set to custom and “hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=0″. Works for me.

i’ve been going from dharma to eden nightlies to beta 1, 2 and now 3 so far. Had a couple of hickups with the mysql database changes along the road, so i re-installed beta 2, exported my databases (music and video, even though music hasn’t changed) to a single file, installed beta 3 and imported the single file export again.. Worked like a charm after that, since it re-created it’s database itself, instead of failing on the update. Took only about 5 minutes of work too btw. Still would love to know what caused this problem in case it happens when going from beta 3 to the next version (beta, rc, full release?) :)

there are few things in life that make my blood boil enough to leave a comment on posts as this, but the unfortunate process of xbmc11 made me feel the need to do so. first of all, i appreciate it’s free, and it it is without doubt the most ‘baller’ aspect of my front room, but that does not disguise the fact that the new install process is the worst i have come across in my life. firstly, i cant see the options at the bottom of the screen, leaving me to press tab until i hope i see a box highlighted, followed by right right until i assume the box for Continue is highlighted, before pressing enter. Human memory from here cannot even serve how painful the process was, so much so that this evening i’ve decided to leave the chore to a day that i feel less like committing suicide. i love xbmc so much, but oddly it is the only thing that makes me want to take my own life….

I find it hard to believe a bunch of 18 to 45 yr olds couldn’t work it out, but perhaps they’re just not a tech. savvy lot. I really think most people pick it up fine, although my sample isn’t enormous I guess, but anyone with any media player experience will soon find it logical.

As much as I agree with this statement, saying ‘the user is doing it wrong’ is just about the worst thing you can do with the results of user testing.

I’m using XBMC 11 Beta3 (updated XBMC Live 10.0 installation). There are a lot of crashes, if you wish I can send you the log files. Another issue is audio over HDMI: It only works if I set 2.0 speaker in config, 5.1 only works with stereo sources, surround sources does not work (only noise). Are there plans to fix this issue (had this problem also in XBMC 10)?

    Hi,

First of all some praise to you guys for making such an awesome project!

And now for some bug issues. Before upgrading to Eden2 and 3, I had a night build from a couple of months ago, where I had a Pulse-Eight CEC adapter working fine, but now, after the upgrade (happened both on 2 and 3), every time I try to connect the TV to XMBC, it crashes. Is anyone else having some similar issues?? I run XBMC on a x86 MacMini. Can this be fixed before the final release of Eden??

    Once again, thanks!!

Works good so far. Is there a way for the TMDB scrapper not to take english facts when language is german?
For Example when there is no german tagline (Kurzinfo) thenn the scrapper takes the english one instead of letting it blank.
