XBMC 11.0 Eden: Beta available now
It took a bit longer than expected due to a few bumps in the road, but we are excited to present the first preview release of (what we consider to be) the best version of the best home theater software out there.
Ladies and Gentlemen, XBMC 11.0 Eden: Beta 1 is available to download.
The sheer number of new features, platforms, and improvements to nearly every facet of the XBMC experience found within Eden are nearly too numerous to count.
Milestones include Addon Rollbacks, vast improvements in Confluence (the default skin), massive speed increases via features like Dirty-region rendering and the new JPEG decoder, a simpler, better library, additional protocol handling, better networking support, better handling of unencrypted BluRay content and structures, adjustable display refresh rate in OSX (to match the already available feature in Windows and Linux), AirPlay support, an upgraded weather service, and much more. Check out the highlights in the summarized changelog.
In addition to our many software improvements, we’ve increased our reach in the realm of hardware support since Dharma was released. Eden marks the first in-sync stable release for the Apple TV2, iPad, and other iOS devices. We’ve vastly improved the method by which we handle input, including heavily upgrading JSON-RPC support, making remote control support much, MUCH simpler in Windows, and enabling unique methods of device communication with hardware like the HDMI-CEC Adapter. And now even AMD devices are supported for GPU video decoding in Linux to some extent, thanks to the inclusion of VAAPI.
We are also in the process of drastically altering XBMC Live to make it more like a full “*Buntu” version of XBMC with massive changes to the boot and install process. That alteration is not quite ready for prime time (and, thus, is not available at this time), but our devs are working on it round the clock. Keep an eye out for a more in-depth article on this in the next week or so. The XBMC Linux PPA is also not immediately available, but check back a few days after Christmas. It should be online at that time.
Because this is Beta software, you can likely expect minor issues over the course of the next few weeks. For example, you may discover issues with playing movie trailers that may require a manual install of the Youtube addon. If, after asking in the forum and updating to the most recently available Beta, your issue is not solved, feel free to follow the above link to the Trac service and create a ticket with the issue. As always, when troubleshooting, providing a debug log will be essential to resolving issues.
And with that, we invite users one and all to backup your userdata folder (which is always a good idea)(also, iOS users, you should follow this link for info on your slightly different backup process), and get to downloading!
Downloads may be found here.
Let us know what you think in the comments. Spread the word. XBMC Eden Beta is finally available!

Works great on the old Apple TV (silver). Looks Awesome! Only bad is I can’t get sound from mono AVIs like home movies and video from some addons through digital audio out or HDMI. Otherwise it’s a big improvement.
Never mind! Set the speaker output to 2.0 in setup and everything is fine now. I’m happy as a clam!
Thanks a lot for all the hours, days, weeks, months you spent to release this jewel piece of software.
Relax and take a deep breath
Great gift
Workes great, except can’t play AAC mp4 movie files, I get video but no audio. Everything else is great.
Köszönet a fejlesztésért! Csak az XBMC miatt építettem HTPC-t, és nem bántam meg. BUÉK!
First off, let me again re-integrate, that I for one, am completely loving the AWESOME!!! work all of you are doing together…It’s absolutely amazing to see how far XBMC has come in the last 5-6 years…Just awesome teamwork and Jonit efforts and sacrifices made on/by all parts…EXCELLENT !!!..
Will media portal (Team XBMC) in the near future be attempting anymore work on getting more cards to work with the live TV within XBMC such as the DVICO’s Dual Express 7 or any of the others similar to it (cards without a encoder)… ???
Hi I intalled Eden yesterday and everything was great but today when started xbmc, subtitle addon was updating my atv2 crashed and after rebooting Surprise there is no Xbmc icon?.? What can I do?
@Matt
Yeah, if you want to go off-reservation and compile tsp’s branch then you can use his myth pvr addon as an integrated frontend for mythtv in xbmc. I use it and just schedule, watch and delete recordings solely through xbmc now. All this PVR stuff won’t be synced up with the main code until after Eden though… so if you don’t want to compile yourself, your gonna have to wait I’m afraid
So how long does it usually take to go from beta to full release?
do you guys think this will run on a P4 2.53 with a ATI 9200
Will XBMC ever come with a default support for bluetooth remote, for example PS3 remote?
Currently i keep configuring config-files in order to get the remote to work, what would be nice is a add-ins or a remote control window that register the keypress on the remote then i can asign a given functionality for that.

Wow! Eden is REALLY good. All plugins work so extremely fast compared to the previous release..
Immediate donation coming!
Great look & feel this beta1, but here we go: Could we expect bitstreaming audio over hdmi, , DTS-HD Master Audio and TrueHD to make ik in the final release? It’s more than a “nice to have” feature….:)
Just Awesome…XBMC you’ve done it up BIG TIME !!! Thanks…I luv & appreciate your hard work, teamwork and sacifice…You all ROCK !!! Happy Holidays…
Good. Will have to start using XBMC more in the new year I think.
What a Great peice of software.Thanks guys and Girls
What about live CD?
I recently installed the 10.1 liveCD version on my HTPC due to the windows version didnt work with hardware accelerated video (dont know wht becuase I had the latest videodrivers, windows = no work, linux = work well, very odd!
anyway, when will u get this new Eden beta as liveCD so that I can only insert that new disc and choose update? :)
Thanks alot for a great home theater app, also… happy new year! :)
sorry, just saw that I wasnt reading all. well I install it on windows as for now and see what news there are.
sorry again för the incovinience! ;|
Does this version of XBMC support Netflix? I can’t seem to find it
All it did was remove my stable release on ubuntu and didn’t install the unstable one. Trying to figure out what went wrong. I doubt it is that unstable. Running 11.04.
@stick
Stick,
I am running XBMC on Win 7 Home Premium in an old AOPEN mobo with a P4 3.0 gig 478 pin processor, 2 gigs mem ADATA 4200 speed, 4 gig flash mem dedicated ready boost, an old 36 gig 10k RAPTOR HDD and a ATI RADEON HD 4670 ICE Q AGP card. The audio runs from the video card in HDMI so i don’t need an audio card for my setup (strictly Home Theater/Web Surfing). The reason I’m telling you all this is because I did a lot of research before building this HTPC on a budget. If you want to do Bluray an 1080p video you will definitely need a card like mine or better and if you can OC your processor to 3.0 (a requirement for HD) then your good to go as long as you have all the other requirements. I recommend everything I mentioned earlier as far as the memory, flash mem and HDD so you can get every morsel of performance that you can. Now I also assume you would want a Bluray player at least so let me warn you from my experience so far. The only software for your player is PowerDVD 11.0, at least the only decent one, but it is still to much for this old of a machine to work very well. I only use it to watch Bluray discs and everything else (avi, mpeg, wmv) I watch through XBMC or VLC Media player – this one actually works best for all movie files especially mp4. XBMC is at its best on this old system for the plugin web content like PBS and the Gamer Preview channel and the likes. I also have it on a newer PC with a quad core and 8 gigs of mem and it is flawless on that machine for nearly everything. Anyway, hope this helped a little and didn’t just waste your time.
@Anonymous
Actually got it working with the German link to get unstable on 11.04. Now to enjoy.

Lve it. Only thing I find a bit fiddly is the music player. If it could be more like WMP with being able to view/search library and add to a playlist all on the same view that would be great. also possibly same functionality for video/ music videos would almost make perfect. Overall great!!
Very nice beta 1, but what about a the next step in audio like bitstreaming DTS-HD/TRUEHD over HDMI?
Will that be within the final XBMC 11.x release?
any one on apple tv 2 (black) on 4.4.4 untethered having air play problems?
This is so great ! Network (among others) is really faster, bravo !
I’ve downloaded the beta for win32 and during the instalation the F-Secure AV system reported a Trojan in the paplayer. Please check it!
Hi all… I have 1 issue, the menus for my dvd movies (video_ts and iso) often show a black screen, or are partly vissible… Any idea what causes this?
i cant use addons. the error that appears is “Script failed” in both my windows 7 pc and my ATV2. Can anyone help me??
script error in both my windows pc and my ATV2. Can anyone help me??
When XBMC support DTS-HD MA and TrueHD over HDMI, then i use it.
Working great. Only no add-ons can be found, list is empty. And some dvds wont play, tries and stops immediately. All are finnish region 2 discs.
It works. However there it stops. I cannot use any of the add-ons for example and also icons from add-ons are not loading. No fixes on forums known to this. Running on my Apple TV (1)
Nice update, but not being able to increase font size (at least I can’t figure it out) from within XBMC is totally baffling! Nothing like sitting from a 42 inch screen squinting at the text! Having to manually edit the Fonts.xml file is silly.
Hi
Plz add this to the final build:
http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/11715
I still can not see the language of the subtitle file, if the there is a long file name.
@Steve
hi steve,
thanks for the response,
I’m gonna try it tonight on one of my old sytems.
hopefully it’ll work with my graphics card, Dharma wouldn’t…
And I also wanted to say I love this software.
i’m running it ‘flawlessly’ on my inspiron 1525
and after trying every media player i could find,
I finally found one that works great and looks even better
Thank you xbmc, you changed my media life :)
How long before this version is standard and not beta?
@Misel Gosic
I get an issue where xbmc on atv-2 is dropping the first letter from my shared folders and then when i select the folder that contains the what i want to watch it says the share is not a available i have uninstalled reinstalled flushed library cache, but nothing changes, i found on my external drive if i cut and paste it some where else on the disk i then can access it but after a few hours or when not using xbmc the error comes back these folders contain 100s of gigs of vid and pictures it takes hours to copy and paste every time i want to watch something
any ideas
other than that it is much faster on evey aspect and love the work you guys do awesome stuff
@Craig
not sure if you found out but you need to add repo to cydia
http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/ios and then install everything in that repo its very easy
the eden version works much better on the ipad but strongly suggest if you have iphone or ipod touch download the uremoteXBMC for it makes it so much better to use
@g725s
best to check out http://trac.xbmc.org/roadmap
Excellent! what a masterpiece of software! By far the best. Thanks a lot and keep the good work.
Eden does look nice, but now I can’t find the amazon or netflix plugins. Where can I find them? Thanks for all the great work!
Anyone have 192khz audio playing right with Beta1? I have Baraka MKV with DTS-HD audio at 192khz. I know that it just supposed to play the DTS Core and it starts playing it and then just chokes. Audio quits working entirely. Until I stop and restart. Same story on restart, where it plays for about 5 seconds then audio dies. I am running on Core i5 with AMD 6450 graphics card.
Alex
Very nice, I like the new look. Only problem for me so far is DVDs do not play. When hitting play disc, screen blanks out for a second then returns to the home screen.
