XBMC 11.0 Eden: Beta available now

December 24th, 2011 natethomas

It took a bit longer than expected due to a few bumps in the road, but we are excited to present the first preview release of (what we consider to be) the best version of the best home theater software out there.

Ladies and Gentlemen, XBMC 11.0 Eden: Beta 1 is available to download.

xbmc-eden-beta-announce-xmas-wide

The sheer number of new features, platforms, and improvements to nearly every facet of the XBMC experience found within Eden are nearly too numerous to count.

Milestones include Addon Rollbacks, vast improvements in Confluence (the default skin), massive speed increases via features like Dirty-region rendering and the new JPEG decoder, a simpler, better library, additional protocol handling, better networking support, better handling of unencrypted BluRay content and structures, adjustable display refresh rate in OSX (to match the already available feature in Windows and Linux), AirPlay support, an upgraded weather service, and much more. Check out the highlights in the summarized changelog.

In addition to our many software improvements, we’ve increased our reach in the realm of hardware support since Dharma was released. Eden marks the first in-sync stable release for the Apple TV2, iPad, and other iOS devices. We’ve vastly improved the method by which we handle input, including heavily upgrading JSON-RPC support, making remote control support much, MUCH simpler in Windows, and enabling unique methods of device communication with hardware like the HDMI-CEC Adapter. And now even AMD devices are supported for GPU video decoding in Linux to some extent, thanks to the inclusion of VAAPI.

We are also in the process of drastically altering XBMC Live to make it more like a full “*Buntu” version of XBMC with massive changes to the boot and install process. That alteration is not quite ready for prime time (and, thus, is not available at this time), but our devs are working on it round the clock. Keep an eye out for a more in-depth article on this in the next week or so. The XBMC Linux PPA is also not immediately available, but check back a few days after Christmas. It should be online at that time.

Because this is Beta software, you can likely expect minor issues over the course of the next few weeks. For example, you may discover issues with playing movie trailers that may require a manual install of the Youtube addon. If, after asking in the forum and updating to the most recently available Beta, your issue is not solved, feel free to follow the above link to the Trac service and create a ticket with the issue.  As always, when troubleshooting, providing a debug log will be essential to resolving issues.

And with that, we invite users one and all to backup your userdata folder (which is always a good idea)(also, iOS users, you should follow this link for info on your slightly different backup process), and get to downloading!

Downloads may be found here.

Let us know what you think in the comments. Spread the word. XBMC Eden Beta is finally available!

    Will come after Eden. There is an unofficial Windows build that might hold you over, as well as some options with external players. Check out: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Hi10P_playback

    My acer aspire revo runs xbmc over windows. On 10.1 it was good but laggy as soon as I had to check time, or things. Now it runs uber smooth! Thanks guys, your superawesome!

    TO ALL WHO ARE POSTING ABOUT BUGS/ PROBLEMS/ ISSUES: Please come to the XBMC support forums and post about your issues there. We can better help you there, and you would help us better there as well, since we can get more details from you for fixing bugs. Operators are standing by…

    Airplay is AWESOME!!! Works nice when playing videos, but playing music via the iPod app does not work (it starts but does not play and then stops a few secs later).

    Awesome job guys! thanks for the xmas gift. Please update ffmpeg for 10-bit support and other decoding goodness.

    Just use MPC-HC with madVR and LAV as external player – best quality available and 10-bit support of course.

    Wow, it took me all this time to finally notice that the “Santa” was actually the XBMC mascot, Zapy. Here’s to hoping he’s just as unrecognizable the next he shows up, because I certainly didn’t miss him :-D

  7. December 26th, 2011 at 01:07 | #7

    @Manu
    While your second link is great, the haruhichan link is full of flawed logic and is downright incorrect in some parts. Hi10P (an 8 year old H.264 profile only meant to be used in editing rooms) is a passing fad that won’t last long with H.265/HEVC around the corner. There is no wide-spread consumer support for Hi10P and never will be. H.265/HEVC is the future.

    Nothing against you, Manu, I just really don’t like that page and the cancer it helps spread.

    Just a short questions: I am currently using a nightly build from november. Are there a lot of new features in this first beta? Is it worth to upgrade? Thanks for all your hard work!

    I had been running a nightly build from early November. I wasn’t able to get it working with the mysql database. Lots of “Unable to open database” errors in the log. I rolled back to the previous version.

    Great to hear that the Live distro will be more of a “full buntu version”. Any chance it will be possible to setup and install to a software RAID?

    Love the new interface and that the application feels smoother.

    Hi, I read that Eden would have Touch improvements, so that’s the first I wanted to check after installing Eden. It’s a no go again, it looks like it is impossible to use the Touchscreen to select a DVD Menu option. When the DVD start playing and show the Title Menu (vob files in a directory) I want to select a chapter or just want to press “Play movie”, instead the DVD menu option is selected after touching the touchscreen I got the XBMC menu en controll options. See http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?p=757996
    and or http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?p=800888

    I know that a Win32 laptop with multi touch screens are rare, next year in 2012 Windows 8 will bring much more Laptops and Tablets with touch. So it’s just a mather of waiting I guess.

    Best Regards,
    Tom

    @Patrik Dufresne

    Would love to know that too

  22. December 26th, 2011 at 18:40 | #22

    @Patrik Dufresne
    @Rob

    Settings -> Network -> Services

    From there you’ll see you can enable it, set a password, etc.

    I think Windows users will need to install Bonjour from Apple. Don’t worry, you don’t have to install iTunes or Safari. I think this works and is minimal impact on Windows: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl999

    Linux, Mac OS X, and iOS have everything required already.

    I’m getting really fed up with the references to the ‘wife’ … usually implying they are stupid, dim. etc.

    Given the level of idiot posts on the forum … I doubt 0.00001% are from women … I suggest posters think twice before making some smart alec remark about the ‘wife’.

    How about a separate forum section for Eden beta? Otherwise posts are going to be splattered all over the place!

    @Ned_Scott and @Manu thanks for the Hi10 tips! MadVR sounds pretty cool. My XBMC media center is a Mac Mini running Lion that won’t fly. I’ll have to give this beta release and MadVR a go on our Win 7 Tablet. It doesn’t have a fancy GPU but it’s always fun to see what you can do.

    I love the Airplay feature. I’ve been using it in since it first appeared in the nightly builds. I had a feeling that when those stopped after 12/11 we’d be getting an xmas surprise. Now if only I could build from the tithed with Xcode 4.1 and the 10.6/10.7 SDKs. That 10.4u SDK requirement is a bit of a nuisance, though i commend the team for their support of older Macs!

    Fed UP :
    How about a separate forum section for Eden beta? Otherwise posts are going to be splattered all over the place!

    @Fed UP I have used the term on the forums before. I think you are being sensitive. There doesn’t seem to be an implication AT ALL that “the wife” is stupid, nor have I EVER read a post on here referring to the WIFE in a degrading or insulting manner. It is the fact, at least in my case, the wife could care less how XBMC works, she just wants a really easy way to watch the movies and tv shows on what she calls the server. She isn’t techie and hates multiple remotes. 9 times out of 10 she is watching a tv show that is in SD, when she can just press 1 button to get it in HD. She just doesn’t care about it like the people on these forums do about media centers.

    That said, I love the EDEN release, been using it in the nightlies and have the central MySQL db running between ATV2, OpenElec, and Win7 with shared thumbs… It is excellent to say the least. Thanks DEVs and everyone in the community. Always getting better.

    I am wondering why my F-Secure Antivirus 2011 finds a virus during install of the Win32 version of the beta ?
    – It is complaining about “timidity.dll” in the path “C:\Program Files\XBMC\system\players\paplayer”.

    This file is supposed to have a virus named: “Ge:Trojan.Heur.GM.2008040880″

    Does any of you have a similar finding ?
    – The name indicates that the heuristics is spotting this one, so I assume (better: hope!) this is a false positive.

    Regards,
    Marcus

    I used it one month ago from a night-build, but it didn´t work very fine for my system…
    Perhaps you could include an explanation of this interesanting feature in the home-page, few people knows about it…

    Works great on my Windows 7 professional setup using Zotac Zbox VD01. Dharma on my system doesn’t play 1080p smooth but this version does. I don’t need to set Media Player Classic as external player anymore.

    I’ve had a few issues with building the Movie and TV Show libraries on a fresh install on a newly jailbroken ATV2 4.4.4. It was a lot more temperamental than the Dharma build on my PC. Great work though, playback is great considering the limited hardware.
