XBMC 11.0 Eden: Beta available now

December 24th, 2011 natethomas

It took a bit longer than expected due to a few bumps in the road, but we are excited to present the first preview release of (what we consider to be) the best version of the best home theater software out there.

Ladies and Gentlemen, XBMC 11.0 Eden: Beta 1 is available to download.

xbmc-eden-beta-announce-xmas-wide

The sheer number of new features, platforms, and improvements to nearly every facet of the XBMC experience found within Eden are nearly too numerous to count.

Milestones include Addon Rollbacks, vast improvements in Confluence (the default skin), massive speed increases via features like Dirty-region rendering and the new JPEG decoder, a simpler, better library, additional protocol handling, better networking support, better handling of unencrypted BluRay content and structures, adjustable display refresh rate in OSX (to match the already available feature in Windows and Linux), AirPlay support, an upgraded weather service, and much more. Check out the highlights in the summarized changelog.

In addition to our many software improvements, we’ve increased our reach in the realm of hardware support since Dharma was released. Eden marks the first in-sync stable release for the Apple TV2, iPad, and other iOS devices. We’ve vastly improved the method by which we handle input, including heavily upgrading JSON-RPC support, making remote control support much, MUCH simpler in Windows, and enabling unique methods of device communication with hardware like the HDMI-CEC Adapter. And now even AMD devices are supported for GPU video decoding in Linux to some extent, thanks to the inclusion of VAAPI.

We are also in the process of drastically altering XBMC Live to make it more like a full “*Buntu” version of XBMC with massive changes to the boot and install process. That alteration is not quite ready for prime time (and, thus, is not available at this time), but our devs are working on it round the clock. Keep an eye out for a more in-depth article on this in the next week or so. The XBMC Linux PPA is also not immediately available, but check back a few days after Christmas. It should be online at that time.

Because this is Beta software, you can likely expect minor issues over the course of the next few weeks. For example, you may discover issues with playing movie trailers that may require a manual install of the Youtube addon. If, after asking in the forum and updating to the most recently available Beta, your issue is not solved, feel free to follow the above link to the Trac service and create a ticket with the issue.  As always, when troubleshooting, providing a debug log will be essential to resolving issues.

And with that, we invite users one and all to backup your userdata folder (which is always a good idea)(also, iOS users, you should follow this link for info on your slightly different backup process), and get to downloading!

Downloads may be found here.

Let us know what you think in the comments. Spread the word. XBMC Eden Beta is finally available!

    Recording?
    Many kudos to the team who brings us such an awesome release, but my #1 wish has always been seamless support for recording TV.
    I currently run mythtv, boxee and XBMC and switch between them for various requirements.
    Mythtv is currently my biggest bug-bear as the interface is lightyears behind XBMC and BOXEE, yet it’s recording ability is second to none.

    Perhaps next year?
    Or maybe I’m missing something and there’s seamless support for recording

    @JustinSane

    Try looking in the logs and definately backup and move your user folder ~/.xbmc away.

    just a heads up. it was freezing for me on launch cause i had old version of the aeon nox skin. i had to manually delete the skin and launch xbmc again for it to work properly. otherwise, looks like a good release! keep up the good work guys!!!

    ATV2/iOS install instructions have been updated on the XBMC wiki: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=IOS_FAQ#Install

    In short, Cydia repo is now the latest version. No more nightlies for Eden.

  19. December 24th, 2011 at 17:34 | #19

    @Kobi D
    @Matt
    @Yaniv

    PVR/DVR wasn’t planned for Eden. Check out the forums for test builds that do have PVR features, but there won’t be a “stable” release with these features until Frodo (XBMC v12). If you don’t need to record TV, live TV is already a feature in XBMC ( http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBMC_Online_Manual look under “Media sources”).

    In any case, PVR/DVR in XBMC is just a front end for other software, like MythTV or Tvheadend. XBMC won’t have built-in tuner support. Such built-in support would have to wait for binary add-ons, which is way in the future.

    Been keeping up with nightlies under Win32 (so I already knew how awesome all these new features are) – but the highlight really is the new iOS version – touch support on iPad is now incredible!
    Hats off to the entire team…

    Well done from South Africa !
    Thank you for providing us with this awesome media center.
    Been using XBMC for over 9 years now and still have it running on my crystal Xbox as well as all my ATv2, Ipad and Zbox
    This is testament to what can be done when people work together and share a passion!
    $100 is its way to you.

    Craig :
    Stupid question, most likely… but is it at all possible for media to be deleted when running this beta? Or are the “risks” not that extreme?

    How possible it is depends on your setup. For example, the computer I have XBMC on doesn’t have the ability (via permissions) to do anything but read files on my Media storage computer so it’d be impossible for an update, or anything else I do on that computer, to do anything to my media. If your media folders have open permissions, there’s always the possibility it could eat your files. However the chances are pretty low with a standard install. Addons and such which are meant to automatically delete things would raise the chances of something going horribly wrong though.

    Your DB and such though, you should backup as those are a bit more likely to be eaten in an update.

    I upgraded XBMC to Eden on my Mac Mini (mid 2010) with an NVIDIA 320M running Snow Leopard. When I start a Movie, Trailer or TV show. The framerate is very slow the image stutters :( How can I fix that? Looks like it doesn’t use hardware rendering or something. I am using the exact same settings in 11.0 as in 10.1.

  33. Fabian
    December 25th, 2011 at 08:13 | #33

    @Fabian

    It seems XBMC 11.0 is missing the option Allow Hardware Acceleration (VDADecoder) so i’am back on 10.1

    Anyone else having issues scrapping your library? I uninstalled a nightly (20111210), deleted the profile folder, installed the beta and added my sources (which worked perfect fine in the nightly) and now I get “Unable to connect to remote server” when trying to scrape info. Absolutely zero things have change on the machine since the nightly

    Thank you so much, and Merry Christmas!

    Just a quicky:
    How long is “soon” (as it says on the download page) before the beta gets uploaded to the unstable ppa? Otherwise I just grab it manually :)

    December 25th, 2011 at 10:44 | #37

    Will there be Eden for Windows? I ran all the nightlies until they stopped, but since there is no beta for win32 I wonder if that platform is scrapped?

    December 25th, 2011 at 11:08 | #38

    @Rudolph
    Ok, you must press Ctril-F5 to refresh the directory listing if you have been there before. Now I see the Eden beta for win32.

    Hiya guys, congratulations on the release of beta 1 of Eden! Well done! I’ve been using the nightlies for the last couple of months now, up until the december 10 version, for windows. I’m running this configuration with a MySQL database. With the nightlies, no problems whatsoever, but after installing the beta 1, my library appears to be completely empty, no data sources are available and the log file keeps repeating the same error:

    15:37:25 T:5388 M:2043613184 ERROR: Can’t open the database xbmc_music as it is a NEWER version than what we were expecting!
    15:37:25 T:5388 M:2043367424 ERROR: Can’t open the database xbmc_video as it is a NEWER version than what we were expecting!

    Is there any way I can fix this, without having to rebuild the database? Or is it better to just wipe my MySQL databases (I see XBMC has been pretty busy creating new ones in the last couple of weeks) and start creating the library from scratch? As for the connection details in the advancedsettings.xml I use for the connection to MySQL:

    mysql
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    xbmc_video

    mysql
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    xbmc_music

    Does the name get used? I see a lot of different names now, ranging from mymusic17, to xbmc_music and xbmc_music17 (and counting upwards). Which naming scheme is actually used right now?

    Thanks for all the incredibly hard work you guys have done so far, enjoy your christmas holidays and take some well-deserved rest ;)

    Just set up the beta of Eden and wow what a fantastic step forward. However nothing for android (a public license based OS) and more for IOS (a fat cat companies OS). What’s the score guys? Love your stuff but struggling to understand the logic of prioritising expensive OS developments before PL software especialy as XBMC originated from PL roots.

    Fantastic job but development seams to be moving in the wrong diredtion. (Just my opinion)

    Someone in the forum said that there is a bug in this Eden Beta. For the scrapper to work you must install the youtube addon. I was having this problem, and installing youtube solved it.

    Just tetsted the BETA and I’m pleased that the performance has increased, mostly in the networking area. but I’m disappointed to see that there is still no support for 10 bit encoded vidoes :( I hope that this will change with the following BETA version.
