Addon Authors, please prepare for Eden

December 3rd, 2011 natethomas

This is just a quick note for addon authors.

XBMC API Changes

"Please return your trays and seatbacks to upright position and prepare for Eden."

XBMC 11.0 Eden represents the first update to the addon repository since Dharma was released and a number of API changes have occurred in between these two releases. First off, our thanks to all the authors who have been keeping on top of API changes. You are doing a great job. The Team would like to recommend that those authors who have not yet upgraded to Eden do so now.

For more specifics on skinning, scripting, json, Python calls, and similar addon API updates, please visit:

Thank you for flying Air XBMC. We are nearing the runway.

Thanks for the update, just wondering whether Eden will have support for HD audio like DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD out of the box. Cheers again, i am sure it will be great even if it didn’t make it in.

    The answer is Yes.

Based on in house testing, I find this version is very fast and uses far less resources than Boxee. Although, I’m still having a big of a headache trying to get the weather to pull the right temperature for my area of 33801. I thought it was funny to see it said lakeland was 12 c when in reality it was like maybe 68 c. Overall playback is amazing quick and after pointing the program where to locate the .zip for Navi-x I am even more impressed on response time. Great job team.

Unfortunately, due to real life circumstances, there was a delay on development for AudioEngine (which, among other things, will support HD audio). Because of this it won’t be included in Eden. It’s possible it might be included in a mid-year release, as some devs have wanted to have shorter release cycles, but there’s no guarantees (probably not even safe to dream about it). You never know when some new issue will come up with the code, or if real life (darn that real life!) comes barking at you again.

    It is coming, though!

Good stuff guys, not used and pre versions of this, so I am a little excited to see what is new. Question: do I have to uninstall dhama first or can this be installed over the top? and is my user data folder safe?

    • December 4th, 2011 at 00:39 | #15

Installing over should be fine, though it’s always a good idea to backup.

Will Eden have better support for hosting files on a server?

there is only so far advancedsettings.xml will go.

I mean easier control of using mysql and remote hosting of the thumbnails, rather than using the advancedsettings.xml

Also when does PVR get more intergrated.

aha :) yea that would be nice if it was simplier or another solution for it, for me the most important thing is to have the watched status saved in som kind of DB and from what I read this can be done using trakt.tv in there Eden plugin, but will have to try it out when Eden hits us.

All the negative comments about no HD Audio even after it has been stating it is still in development, now that’s a pity. XBMC is free and is being developed in peoples spare time, or has everyone forgotten this ?

    @Anonymous

This is a great point, and more people should take the time to congratulate the team on a fantastic effort and on providing what has become the de facto HTPC solution for most of us. I can’t stress how appreciative I am of the effort that goes into every release and would like to apologise for giving a negative impression here.

I guess it’s human nature to be more expressive about disappointment than joy and we take all the fantastic things the XBMC dev team have given us for granted. I guess from a selfish perspective, it’s just that having HD audio bitstreaming built-in would mean that I could use exclusively XBMC and not have to worry about configuring external players or looking into branches, such as DSplayer.

Once again, great work guys :)

  38. Craig
    December 9th, 2011 at 11:30 | #39

It’s not so much negativity. Just something people were looking forward to having in Eden that they will have to wait longer for. I’m sure everyone here is forever greatful for the time and effort the developers have put into xbmc. Eden may not have hd audio and hopefully a mid-year release will include this but the features and improvements it does have are fantastic.

So Eden is optimized for low powered systems, UI more touch friendly, but no weather, pvr or HD audio codecs included. All sounds very tablet friendly to me..or should I say App Store compliant. Sure would be nice if a new branch was started with HTPCs being the focus.

Anonymous…..Well said! I sit here as a novice user of XBMC, just loving the experience that XBMC gives me. The XBMC fraternity (of which I am proud to say i belong) is made up of technology loving geeks; not a slur by any means. Being geeks technology is so ubiquitous to us that we want it all, we want it for free and we want it now. Anonymous is right, we forget that the folks who are beavering away on the code are just like us, they have jobs, families and commitments. Guys I look over at my Arcam and yes I would dearly love HD audio right now, but you know what, I’ll wait…..we all will. So as I sit here in Belfast watching the snow drifting down I tip my hat to anonymous for keeping us grounded, and whilst the Eden HD discussion will no doubt rage on (as some of you wiki ubiquitous) I have an even bigger dilemma; I have to work out how i tell my 7 year old daughter she cant have a actual car for christmas!!

  43. December 9th, 2011 at 20:47 | #44

    sekkim :

they have jobs, families and commitments.

To be fair, some of us are between jobs. The rest of the statement stands though. Also, I recommend telling your daughter that trains are cooler than cars.

Ignorance is such an ugly thing. Let’s set some facts straight. Weather is fixed and there is zero issue there. No one expected PVR to be ready for Eden. AudioEngine was delayed because of reasons that have nothing to do with iOS, tablets, touch, or any of that. The iOS/ATV2 improvements carried over to the desktop-based HTPCs in the form of a faster, less CPU-demanding, GUI, and a bunch of other stuff. Most of the developers do not work on iOS/tablet-specific things. The bulk of the iOS specific work was done by two guys who also work on the other OS’s as well. Touch support was originally a Windows-only feature that was added last year for XBMC v10.

My thoughts exactly. HD audio and PVR were my main reasons for upgrading.
Not much point now, might wait and see if it makes it into 11.1 … or see what other programs are out there that can handle HD audio from Blu-rays

I would like to thank the xbmc team and everybody that has contributed to the developing of this fantastic piece of software. May I ask how soon can we get our hands on a steady build for Eden? Can’t wait !
PS : I was also a bit dissapointed when I read about the HD Audio feature, not being implemented -yet- but I agree with an Anonymous post, we must not forget that XBMC is created on the spare time of the developers, and still remains free.

So , Great work you guys, Thank you very very much!
