Official XBMC Remote for Android

July 13th, 2010 freezy3k

Nearly a year ago, topfs2 started working on a remote client for Android phones and was shortly joined by me, not even having my phone yet. The project grew rapidly and soon the_alien and mikkle joined the show. While the app was always freely available via Google Code, we’ve decided today that it’s time for a public beta release on Android Market. It’s still not final, but we’ve received much positive feedback from users, and after all a Market distribution is much more convenient for both us developers as well as the users.

There is still a lot to do, but the basics should work fairly well. Besides using the app as pure remote control with the look of the famous Xbox DVD Dongle, you’ll be able to browse your music, movie and TV shows library. Browse through your albums by genre or artist, select or queue an album without even turning on your television? No problem. Make incoming calls automagically pause the film you’re watching? Go to settings and check the option. You can find a complete list of features on the project page. Also check out the screenshots gallery.

You’ll need at least Android v1.5 (Cupcake) and XBMC v9.11 (Camelot) in order to run it correctly. Also, XBMC’s coming up Dharma release will be fully supported. If you have a suggestion or find a bug, please use our issue tracker and not the comments in Android Market. If you need discuss other stuff you’re not sure about, use our forum. We are looking forward to your comments and suggestions!

damn good timing my phone packed it in the other day and have been trying to decide what to get. This helps narrow down the choices. :p Cheers for the cool app.

Any chance of anyone doing a Windows Mobile port of this? I would do it myself if I had more programming skills than a stoned gibbon…

Awesome job guys. This app is well on it’s way to beat all the paid XBMC remote apps for the iPhone.
I’ve got one weird issue, though – items from the library play fine, but the ‘pure remote’ and play/stop/pause/next/previous controls don’t seem to be working. Other XBMC remote apps for both Android and the iPhone don’t have this problem, so it’s probably something with this app. I noticed the entry ‘Event server port’ which has the default value of ‘9777′, but I can’t find that setting anywhere in XBMC’s setting. Running XBMC 9.11 r26018 and the Android app on a HTC Desire.

I never doubted you novel intentions.

I just advise to maybe clarify some of the uses in the app description. It’s the only info the user gets when downloading an App and some people might step back confronted with that decision on privileges up front.

Nice. Not. VERY nice work guys!

    WTB Symbian remote

Sad to see how the most used Mobile OS in the world gets no love from devs…

For all that asks for ports, the code that communicates with XBMC is java and should be portable granted that the porting device runs java (not very common though). The presentation part is heavily coupled with Android framework. Both of those combined means that its very unlikely any port will be a result and its much more likely someone creates a new application for said devices.

There is no plans for any of the current developers in team-xbmc to do so however, mostly since very few use anything else than android or iphone.

oh hi, Symbian’s 44% market share would like to have a word with you…

(i’m assuming that your last paragraph meant that not many people use other mobile OS besides Android and iPhone… if you meant that the devs only use those 2, then fair enough)

If the code that communicates to XBMC is Java then it should run on almost any phone, since most phones can do Java… i’m no programmer, but as a consumer i must say i would gladly pay 5 bucks for an app like this in S60v5, so if anyone wants to do it, you have at least one certain sale :P
