I ve downloaded a trailer and put it in the dir. where the movie Pulp Fiction.mkv is stored (the dir. is also called Pulp Fiction). I named the trailer Pulp Fiction-trailers.mov. Is it correct that XBMC only 'sees' a trailer when you add a movie and the movie-trailer.mov file is already in that map? If so, is there no way to get XBMC see this later added movie-trailer.mov?

It should locate the trailer and add it in your library.
when you set the content for the folder your movies are located perhaps you checked "Selected folder contains a single video"? (rightclick your source folder and select "set content") |

Refresh the individual movie and rescan it into your database.

highlight the movie, press "c" to go to Movie Information and select Refresh.

"c" doesn't refresh your movies, it brings up the context menu which allows you to select Movie Information which has the option to Refresh a movie.
Pressing "i" brings up Movie Information to save you a step. You still have to select Refresh for the movie you've added the trailer.
