hey everyone. first, i just want to say how incredible i think xbmc is! i envy the abilities of the people responsible for making it what it is.
the reason for my post is how dissappointing it is to go into the xbmc irc and see admin abuse. for example, i was idling in the channel and noticed that someone had asked if someone else had tiger woods 2004. i didn't think the game had been released. tiger woods 2003 being one of my favorite games i asked if 2004 had been released (meaning-was it in stores?). no one responded. accepting no response and seeing how quite the channel had become, i said that it was interesting how many people idle on the xbmc irc. pike then says something like, yeah we look like a warez channel. i didn't know wtf he was saying. next i'm kicked. i then come back in and asked why. he says because i was suggesting warez. !?!?!? then, he said he "assumed" that is what i was referring to. someone else even tried to speak up for me too, seeing how unjust the kick was. then i was banned. i think this kind of abuse really hurts the xbmc community. i appreciate good admins, but it's sad when their powers are abused and they ruin it for some of us, who are just trying to be a part of the community. -pigbot p.s. i would appreciate being unbanned. thanks. |

i got nothing to hide here.

you asked 7 minutes after i already kicked one user that asked after it. why ask for games and stuff in #xbmc in the first place? we're there to give support for xbmc, nothing else. i'm not abusing my position, you're the one using the word "ass" (i assume you must know that assume is a real english word (no pun intended there)) if you been on other networks, this ban would be sticky, i'm 100% sure. just please do not talk back to us operators, it serves you no good, trust me. at best, you get kicked, at worst, someone may decide it's not worth the effort to stay around and help whining users anymore.

well, i appologize for asking the question. i had skimmed over channel and was unaware that the user was kicked for the question. and i appreciate that you're not being paid for your services.
but i still think my intentions were clear. i make good money, i don't need to download s**t illegally. i believe you are cynical to alot of the xbmc community and you look for the "bad" in the innocent. that's just my opinion. call it "talking back" if it makes you feel more just. oh, and i know my english words. -pigbot if someone else thinks i'm totally wrong here, let me know and i'll let it be. |

we do this dayly.
and we are no beginners. we have run #xbmp and #xbmc for over 2 years now. (and i think we got 3-4 complaints from users who got banned) with a channel that is one of the xbox scene´s largest we get tons of , call them what you want: noobs, morons, idiots, spoonfeeders and spammers. we have them all... yes, we will get pissed off, sometimes it may seam like for no reason, but belive me (or rather trust me), there are reasons for it. i´ll end with one of the best mirc qoutes ever http://www.bash.org/?112032 Quote:

that's some good comic relief.
at the same time, that is some of my point. believe me, i understand what you're saying when talking about dealing with difficult people, it's that way with every admin/op position. but i seriously believe that some lightening up is in order. look at these two scenarios: 1- a newbie comes into the channel and pms an admin and asks, "how do i put xbmc on my xbox?" --that would be frustrating! 2- a newbie comes into the channel and posts the question "how do i put xbmc on my xbox?" --if someone thinks it's a basic question and feel the newbie should be doing more research, thats fine! but just ignore them! if some else is idling and has the time to help them, let them. if no one answers and the newbie continues to ask the question (spam), i could see some annoyance. but it's not that way in xbmc and many other channels. i seriously think it's sad. many admins/ops really do expect to be treated like god. ...there are enough people acting like god, how about some people acting like friends and not taking such offense to everything. -pigbot |

i'd be willing to bet that out of 100 people asking about a game in the manner you did, maybe 1 would be an innocent question about release dates. the rest would be warez related. this is why most people assume the worst, it's an unfortunate fact of life especially in a scene such as this.
regarding n00bish questions, well there's quite a few of us who do put in the time and effort to help out newbie's to xbmc and the scene. but we all do it in out spare time and it can be annoying as dday says when people don't even try to look up the basic info first. it's one of the reasons i stopped posting on xbox-scene's forums, too many people not even willing to look anything up first, they just jump in and ask and don't even take the time to read the stickies! this is one of the reasons why we might seem a bit short or come over as less than helpfull sometimes. but we can be a fun bunch! honest

i started the xbmp chan like two years ago and in the beginning i tried to deal with everybody joining the chan no matter what he was saying/asking or doing (complaining ppl/rude ppl/spamers/plain idiots) i tried to help or started to argue with them. but at a certain point you notice that you loose the motivation to help at all because of all the ppl pissing you off (and believe me there are a lot around). now you have two choices, you stop beeing on irc or you try not to get pissed off that much anymore. and thats where a kick/ban can be very handy instead of arguing over and over again (btw we never kick n00bs for stupid questions). but i have to admit that we sometimes kick somebody cause we missunderstood him or just assume what he is talking about cause we had to deal with exact the same thing so often. but on the other hand... it was just a 60min ban. you would get blacklisted in other chans for less.
