Default Really low quality audio

Hi,

My the audio on my system had been performing fine until recently. I'm not exactly sure when this problem surfaced. Perhaps after a recent update?

My system is Mythbuntu 9.04 i386(up to date as of today). XBMC 9.04.1 installed from PPA. The PC is connected to the amp via spdif. All audio works fine in Myth. In XBMC "passed through" audio works fine also. The problems arise with all other audio, mp3, aac, wav etc. It all sounds like really low bit rate mp3.

My debug log, located here, does mention pulse audio, but pulse is not installed on my system. Perhaps that's a clue?

Thanks in advance.
Phil
