Default iMovie output

I have some home movie stuff that I've created in iMovie. Just taking the iMovie .dv output doesn't play in XBMC, nor does the standard export of what I believe is an .m4v format. I did have luck with a low-res .avi format, but it's pretty bad quality.

Does anyone have tips specifically using iMovie for high-res output for the xbmc?
