I was looking at getting a NAS to use with XBMC/Xbox, and was thinking of getting a second-hand QNAP TS-209, as it has SMB support (See here for specs).
But a comparison chart shows that the newer QNAP TS-209 II has "Support XBMC via SMB for media playing" whereas the older QNAP TS-209 does not. So ... is this correct? Can I not mount a SMB share hosted on a QNAP TS-209 NAS to stream media to XBMC? |

I tend to re-cycle old PC's... I have an old P4 machine running Windows Home Server and its great... you can "pool" all you old harddrives and it see's it as one big drive as such.... it will also back all your PC's up automatically and youcan access your files anywhere and with software installed stream you music and media anywhere!
Old PC anything 1Ghz PIII and above are in bins these days and a copy of WHS is less than £90..... I'm remote into it now from work sorting files out... top software!!

I have both a QNAP 209 and a 209 Pro II. both have raid 1 configuraiton. I currently stream content from the 209 to xbmc using a wireless G conneciton with no problem. both work properly.

Most NAS feature a SMB/SAMBA/CIFS server and are compatible with XBMC via it, see:
http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=SMB and of course: http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=NAS Quote:

I guess the QNAP feature comparison chart is wrong. I can't see a reason why both products have SMB support but only one is listed as working with XBMC (unless the QNAP marketing dept are trying to steer buyers towards the newer device). |
