i have been looking to add more space to my network for storing video and music files so i can access them on xbmc and my pc's, i was looking at adding another hdd to one of the pc's that's on the most of the time but then i noticed that there are nas drives that connect direct to a router which would be a far better solution for me.
i have been looking at a few nas drives and was wondering if they worked with xbmc, the one i was looking at is a maxtor h14p200 ( http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=88340 ). has anyone had experience with these? or is a little more in the know that could help me. thanx for any advice.... |

you can use a nas, if it support smb!
i use nas devices, they support smb [linux based] and all is working fine! here is a little list [ger.site] of nas devices which support smb! http://www.nwlab.net/art/netzwerk-festplatte/nas.html regards geminiserver Quote:

the absolute best for cheap nas is naslite+ from server elements (http://www.serverelements.com/).
it is basically an os stored on a cd or a usb stick (if your bios allows you to boot from a usb volume) that can turn any cheap pc into a nas server. nothing is installed on the hds. example, my config at home: pentium2 pc about 450 megs ram (way more than you actually need) 2 hds: 250 go + 300 go (there is no limitation in size as naslite+ does not use the pc bios once the os is launched) total cost: $25 (for naslite+), as old pc was free, plus about £50 for 300 go. (the 250 go i already had) |

i've just set up a naslite + server to store my mp3s and dvd isos that i have ripped. only problem is with the smb file system under naslite, it has a 4gb file size limit. most of my isos are over 4gb. aparently the way round the file size limit is to use the nfs file system that it also supports but xbmc does not support nfs (as far as i can see). just though i'd post this for anyone considering naslite. apart from this incompatibility with xbmc, naslite is a great way to create a cheep, reliable nas box and if it's files under 4gb (mp3s for example) then it works really well . :kickass:

specs: hp 6700 tower (25.00 off ebay) 4 250g 7500 rmp seagate drives (99.00 each) the network card etc was a gimmie. as my videos are mainly divx (less than 4 g) i dont have any issues at all with storage i do wonder however tony has added error checking to the newer naslite+ version. when you make a floppy to run it from, is the error checking included on that floppy disk or is it just the plain freebie?

Hi All,
I made a thread about this last week but its disappeared ![]() Anyway, Im looking at a NAS drive as my xbox is running out of space and I think getting a NAS drive will be a better option. I'm particulary keen on the QNAP TS-109 because of its features, mainly because it uses little power, quiet and it has a bit torrent client! http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=78 According to the support forum, a member could not get it to work with his XBMC. Just wondering if anyone has this drive or if there are similar type of drives which is compatable with XBMC |

I don't know about the QNAP, but I'm using an NSLU2. If you're a bit geeky, you can put a modified firmware (Unslung) on there that has a light-weight linux package management system and also a torrent client (transmission.cgi), which is a bit ugly, but works. You can also put a real debian on it. In my household, we're using it with 4 Boxes and it works like a charm.

Hello all, I'm trying to buy a NAS to use it excluvely with XBMC. I've read that many of them don't work properly...so I would like to know if any of the following models would run ok with my favourite media center
![]() One Two Three I know, they are not the best enclosures of the world...but they are cheap, which is what I want. Thank you. |
