Question LIRC compatible IR/IrDA receivers?

I am currently searching for a lirc compatible receiver with USB. I have found several receivers (commercial and examples for self-building) but they all work only with RS-232.
Can anyone recommend me some?

Can't you just buy and use a RS232 to USB converter?

...otherwise I guess it depends where in the world you live?

Are these really working with lirc? If I remember correctly I read somewhere that lirc does not support these adapters.

I don't know, try asking on LIRC forums.

Default The best solution...

the best (and cheapest) solution for me was: Buy a XBox DVD Kit. IR Receiver and remote for about 10€ on ebay. And an XBox/USB adapter, so you can plug it into your pc. It works with Lirc! Needed some hours to get it to work with it though, but that was every time I tried to do Lirc stuff.

I use the MCE remote and reciever and it works well. It also comes with two IR transmitters which you can use to drive other bits of gear (for example I've got scripts that change the settings on my amplifier using the IR transmitters).

Very interesting. I thaught that LIRC was unable to use these transmitters.
Would you please share your scripts ? I'd definitely love to do that as well.

For knatsch, go for a MCE remote, they are very easy to setup with Lirc.
Instructions at MythTV wiki worked like a charm for me.

Thanks

usb to serial dongles won't work. For serial recivers lirc uses sensitive timers and usb signaling breaks that.

Xbox1 remotes works nicly with lirc and XBMC, just use the atiusb driver. MCE 2005 remotes also work very well with the mce_usb2 driver

Thought I'd wade in here to share my own ignorance. I'm currently using a Harmony 885 with my Xbox XBMC install and my Linux box arrives tomorrow. So will the Xbox IR receiver work equally well with it under Linux, assuming I have a USB adapter?
