Question XBMC for Linux in a car with touchscreen?

I was just looking at some of the in-dash touchscreen on ebay and was wondering whether anyone had installed a linux version of xbmc in their car? Would also be nice to hear any other thoughts on in car xbmc installations.

The thumbnails for the videos and tv-series makes it really easy for the kids to use from the backseat

+ a spider just thought it to be neat to drop on me :/
scared the hell out of me

Ow, and I've been up all night messing with lirc and XBMC,
my PCTV ir-receiver don't seem to work with the Xbox Remote, however it does work flawlessly with the original (how strange, huh?)
XBMC managed to get most of the commands right, except for the down key, that worked with an older build, but for the new build, I had to make it send a keydown event.

None the less, it would be a neat idea for a car installment!
But then again, wouldn't the original Xbox be neat aswell?
Kids love games, and combined with movies, they'll be smiling the whole trip, coz they're having the best of both worlds, all in a neat package!

Yes I was initially thinking of using my old xbox in the car but then after reading abit and looking at existing products came to the conclusion that being able to actually install xbmc-linux on a product such as the pioneer AVIC-HD3 would be ablsolutely awesome.
...maybe one day if we get some interested developers we might see a xbmc-car edition. It's nice to dream isn't it.

I'm planning this as well. Currently have a PC/Touchsreen setup and would love to install linux/xbmc as the menus are much more suited to a touchscreen interface (I guess the buttons would all have to be reprogrammed to onclick??)

I'm hoping touchscreen functionality will be added to the linux port too. Not for car use at first, though XBMC on an Pioneer avic would certainly be on my 'to do' list.

I'd be thinking of using a larger touchscreen built into a coffee table in my Projecttion Home theater/Music room. Would look totally cool and I wouldn't have to turn on the PJ and waste bulb hours/on-off cycles just to listen to some music on the main sound system.

This was not possibly with normal xbox as most touch screens require drivers. But, most if not all touchscreens have linux drivers available. So, I assume these could be installed and a touchscreen would be possible with xbmc-linux.
Would be good to get some confirmation from a linux dev tho.

You may want to try this link

Googled for 'touchscreen linux', second link.
Also a howto
http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO...een-HOWTO.html

So yes, this is available for linux and yes, as with Rythmbox Music Player (or any other application) working in ubuntu, xbmc for linux will work with touchscreen in ubuntu

Two things you'll need to consider:
  • Graphics card: Your car PC will need to have a decent gfx card with OpenGL 2.0 support (currently I'd recomment nvidia to fully experience xbmc).
  • Display resolution: Ideally you'll want at least 720p resolution (1280x720). Not sure what the current car PC displays support. XBMC under linux can downscale to other X supported resolutions, but I haven't tested anything less that 1024x768.
Touchscreens, ideally, shouldn't be an issue as long as you can configure the X drivers for it, but again this hasn't been tested.
