Default Maxtor Shared Storage Plus 200GB, question

Hi all

XBMC NAS wiki page says this is a compatible device but when I downloaded the user guide for this device it only mentions hooking it up to a router. On the XBMC NAS wiki page it states:

"To stream from a NAS device to XBMC simply setup a SMB/SAMBA/CIFS (or UPnP) share on the NAS with a username and password, (once you have configured its network settings and connected it to your network), then add a bookmark for that share in XBMC."

Is it possible for me to do the above with this device & then connect it directly to the Xbox via a crossover cable rather than through a router.

Many thanks for any advise you can offer,
Chef
