Thumbs down NetGear SC101 Storage Central - does not work with XBMC for Xbox!

i just purchased a netgear sc101 storage central. i wanted to add it to xbmc as a networked share but i am not sure how to do this. storage central is assigned an ip address on my network and as far as i know there is no way to set up smb. does anyone have any advice?
thank you!

goto your settings and fill out the information for samba, where it asks for computer make sure to use the ip addy, fill in the uname & pass (if there are none leave them blank).

i am unfamiliar with your nas but if its a mswin box make sure you have guest account enabled and you should be fine.

**if i am wrong anybody feel free to chime in.

apparently you need to set up each device that accesses the sc101 to be able to do so.

this means u cant just plug it into your router and access it via the xbox it has to added to your computer and shared as a drive on there

hi,

i am currently running out of space on my pc that the xbox is connected two and as space in the case is limited i have been thinking of using the netgear sc101 external unit to store stuff to share to the xbox. http://www.netgear.com/products/details/sc101.php

but on reading the manual that comes with it i dont think this is going to work for me, my question is has anyone tried using these units as placing them on my network seems like a great idea.

if it wont work has anyone got any other suggestions that will work along the same way ?

cheers and thanks

wazza - should be no reason why not but before you rush out and buy one - do you have dhcp in your network? can you connect this to your router and assign a dedicated dhcp address to it? you will need to find the mac address and assign a fixed dhcp address so that it does not continually change ip's.

as for mapping - i took a look at the netgear website and can not determine if it supports smb sharing - as long as it does and you can assign a user name and password to the share then you are good to go.

cheers

by the way - a point to note - running out of disk space is a problem... :-) i have currently got 1.5tb of storage for my systems.. and........ i am running out! got 72gb left and seriously need to throw at least double that at it again. i am growing by about 1tb per year but i have good news if you have money! take a look at my guide http://www.wayne186.com/selfbui....bmc.htm go to the meaty stuff link at the bottom of the page for more specific information. you may want to buy something like this http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82e16817121405 and fill that bad boy up with 5 x sata disks.. if you are going to buy a controller then i would strongly suggest a 16 port adaptec for the ease of adding more storage as you climb forever skyward in that quest for the ultimate dvd collection :-)

hi wayne,
thanks so much for the info, infact the link you have supplied was exactly what i wanted * *
to answer your questions i have a network setup at home running dns, dhcp and active directory with roaming profiles. sounds a bit large but where i used to live all the neighbours were connected to my system, via wireless and cable, it was also great way to teach myself ms server and ad etc. now though since i have just moved its only me and the mrs's.

disk space is a worry for me as i have converted all my dvd's all 300 of them to avi as they are easier to watch around the house off the xbox's this mind you excludes my extensive music collection from my old dj days * *so my two server have 6 x 250 gig hdd's in them and as such was looking for a better way of doing things.

all i can say is xbmc and the xbox has created a monster *

as for the netgear unit that was all i could find but reading the manual said that you needed to install software which made me wander if it would work hence the question. your solution is by far better as the unit is also sata which is really what i wanted. now all i have to do is find out where to get the unit here in sydney australia .

thanks heaps again for your help and the links, when i get the unit(s) and connect them i'll post my results in here so other can benefit. sure beats building another pc which will just sit there and use power to run the hdd's

** edit **
i was just reading about the unit and correct me if i am wrong but this has to be installed into your current pc ? i hope not as i have no room in the machines both towers are full . i actually found this one which has promise any thoughts ? its half way down the page and called a saturn http://www.computertarget.com.au/ and i can place in larger hdds if i want and plugs into the hub or usb

actually this is a better link
http://www.vipower.com.tw/p_landisk....no=vpa-3528net

thanks again though

wazza

Default Looking for a resilient storage solution

I have outgrown the hard disk on my Xbox and want to find an inexpensive NAS device that has some form of resilience (disk mirroring).
A quick Google threw up the Netgear SC101, a small device that houses a pair of IDE drives that can be mirrored. I was about to place an order until I discovered that it can only be accessed from a Windows machine that has the Netgear software/drivers loaded.
Does anyone out there have experience of the SC101? The only way I can think of using it is to access it from a Windows machine and share the connection. XBMC should then be able to connect to the Windows share (not very pretty but it should work)

I have found a number of single drive NAS enclosures but I really want to find something with a mirroring capability. Buffalo seem to have something of interest but it seems overkill/overpriced for my requirement.

Jimbo

PS: I also want to access the device from a couple of Windows boxes

Stay away from that device if you want to network it to XBMC. This device is really comparable to a SAN, and it absoloutly positively needs a networked pc to access the data on it. It connects to other windows-only computers via a special driver that needs to be loaded on each pc. You can probably double share it, i.e., share the share in your workgroup, but that defeats the purpose of having a NAS anyways. Check out all the comments on neweggs website before even considering this device for windows pcs, let alone XBMC. So many complaints like overheating, data loss, etc far outweigh the benefits of this SAN.
