on a different issue - but wonder if its related - would not specifically installing the C++ and DirectX run-time effect video playback ?

I've used many varients of the previous version of XBMC with very little problems

but with the new Alpha - no matter what I set the video settings to - videos (any format doesn't matter) - play (you can hear the sound) - but the screen is black. You can still see the XBMC commands etc - so that part of display is working - just there is no video whatsoever.

Any ideas please ?

Anywhere, then add it's parent's directory as a source. There are a few other threads that you can search for regarding strm files. Also the wiki http://xbmc.org/wiki

I keep the .strm files in D:\XBMC\Music\Radio and my sources.xml contains:

<music>
<default>Network</default>
<bookmark>
<name>Network</name>
<path>I:\</path>
</bookmark>
<bookmark>
<name>Local</name>
<path>D:\XBMC\Music\MP3</path>
</bookmark>
<bookmark>
<name>Radio</name>
<path>D:\XBMC\Music\Radio</path>
</bookmark>
</music>
