View Full Version : FTP boost mode (for QWIX, like Avalaunch has)
even though xbmc is only approx 110mb (with scripts and skins) it still takes 15 minutes or so to transfer via ftp from windows xp to the xbox over 100mb lan.
is there any other way to make the transfer faster?
i know avalaunch has qwix with turbo mode or something like that.
anyone working on something like this or qwix compatibility for xbmc?
nope it isn't, however why don't you just run avalaunch separate to use it's ftp server when updateing xbmc, way better than using xbmc's internal. never good to update a running program
yup... i'm going to do that.
i actually ftp games and such also. did not want to exit xbmc unless i was updating the app itself.
i'm really hoping someone makes qwix compatible with the x3 chip!

it would be nice if xbmc supported the avalaunch ftp boostmode protocol for faster transfering of files to and from xbmc.
"q: what is boost mode?
a: boost mode is an improved ftp protocol that is currently only supported with avalaunch. it can make transfers push the limits of your 100mb connection, and is especially helpful with transfers that contain a lot of small files."
tnx
i'd love to see this too... several xbox tools support boost mode (qwix, c-xboxtool, suxx).
i'd like to not need ava at all... and would not if xbmc supported boost mode.
dev team... any takers?

+1
instead of boost mode for such a few applications on pc to work with. could we not have something like the music background scanning.
thus enabling u to carry on working or browsing while ftp'ing info in the background? also if some idiot did decide to power off or load "his favorite default.xbe" then it would create a queue.txt to continue on reboot of xbmc?
i.e. xbmc create a list in queue.txt then emptie it a file are transfered but if any are not removed then obviouly it wa interupted and mut continue when xbmc reboots or a continue queue option i clicked?
* i know what i'm thinking but it's hard to explain. and i think it's quite logical? even from a devs point of view *

i also like to have boost mode support in xbmc's ftp-server (filezilla), i think the boost mode specs can be found here (link) (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=137059), be great for transfer of small files.

sorry gamester did not realise. thanks for info.
does that mean we could have background transfers in the same way music scanning works?

are you talking of ftp server or client i xbmc? the xbmc doesn't have a ftp client, and as for the server the transfers are done i the background.
or do you want some kind of status box for ftp transfers similar to the music bakground scanning box?
it will be a great feature, especially for upgrading xbmc that has thousands of small files.

does that mean we could have background transfers in the same way music scanning works?not sure exacly what you mean, like vnm said; xbmc's built-in ftp-server is always working in the background so you can watch video or listen to music at the same time you transfer files.
sorry had sank a few beers... i was on about file tranfers not ftp (off topic) apologies...

off topic: you really shouldn't run xbmc while updating it. some important files may not be overwritten. the fastest server i know about, for normal ftp'ing, not boost mode, is in fact the one that's built into evolutionx. dl evox from the usual places and try for yourself. it also helps to have an active ftp connection rather than a passive one.
i update xbmc all the time when it is running... no ill effects. but, that is not why i want boost mode anyway. more for large sets of files, games, etc.
it will be an issue to upgrade xbmc using the ftp server in xbmc when one tries to overwirte the same directory. i normally upgrade to a different directory. that is why i don't have a problem doing that. :)
i've done it many times in the same directory, while running. no problems for me. maybe i'm just a lucky guy
i always update xbmc in the same directory while xbmc is runnning.
absolutely no problems. and never have i had any. there is no issues whatsoever in doing this.
if you are having issues when upgrading xbmc while xbmc is running, then i'd love to hear what kind of issues those are, but i highly doubt that is the case.

there's a long time since i updated xbmc while it was running, and of course my problems may have been caused by something else. i've also heard about others that has got problems after updating that way.
but if it works for you people, then what could be better?! :)
and btw, we're off topic here. what do you devs think about this feature suggestion?
any update on the possibility of adding this? its the one feature keeping me from using xbmc instead of avalaunch.

instead of the qwix boost mode which has limited support, why not upgrade to the newer versions of filezilla server which have ftp compression (mode z) support?
this should provide some speed improvements.
mode z only works with stuff that can be compressed. that means basically textfiles - so dir listings would be faster.
it's not a replacement for boost mode but support for it would be nice, if it doesnt take to much resources. remember stuff that are sent compressed, would need to be decompressed.
adding qwix support would shoot xmbc's usability through the roof. *qwix + avalaunch is currently the fastest method to extract and upload an iso from pc to xbox. *
the ava team has opened up the protocol, so there is no excuse for xbmc not to take advantage of that.
i couldn't find any mention of this, but it would be awesome if xbmc had a boost mode that can be used with qwix101. this is the only thing that keeps xbmc from being my main dashboard, thanks
thats my problem 2.
i always have to use avalaunch or my x3 hardware ftp server..
this is a really good feature request!!!

i couldn't find any mention of thiswhen you search, please search from "the beginning" in the future, i'm merging into existing request thread.
fyi, some already submitted a source code patch for it (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1360747&group_id=87054&atid=581840) but it has not been implemented into the cvs (yet).
thanks for merging this, sorry i didn't see it sooner. is there a plans to merge the boost code into the cvs build? i am not cool enough to do it my self i have to rely on t3ch for my xbmc, thanks
boost code patch isnt functional afaik. it's only halfdone, the guy that wrote it gave up
oh and for the record, i removed gglaze's developer status (he's the one the patch is assigned to).
if mr.gglaze think this was unfair, all he have to do is to complete the thing he's "been working" on for i dunno, the last 6-18months? and commit this as a working patch. i got tired of hearing "next week" "after my vacation" "soon" etc

Sad. :( Someone else should pick this up then... If people don't think they need this, they never really sent a shitload of data from PC to Xbox or Xbox to Xbox... The speed gain with boost mode is insane and eye popping

Bummer... I was just browsing patches and now its a dead end :(
so, I just noticed there's a GPLed Xbox game manager which has an FTP client with Boost Mode support. It's on sourceforge over here:
http://xbgm.sourceforge.net/
Could I pester one of the networking-savvy devs into having a look at this? elupus perhaps? I realize that this isn't all the information needed to add Boost support to XBFileZilla, but I figured it MAY be possible to add it to the client side of things.

very long time now its simple and i can runnit on my xp and on my linux box.
Why mess with this :nerd:
I would think a better thing to implement is xbox iso handling (.xiso) so that we can choose a iso stored on a smb share and unpack it in my files.
For upgrading xbmc, I use dvd2xbox and connect to a smb share and transfer it in the filemanager.. takes about 30 secs to update xbmc, compare that to any ftp with or without boostmode.
Happy 2008. Still no word on Boost mode support?
I tried finding out, but I never saw the boost mode avalunch/qwix used inplemented in xbmc. Am I blind or was it never implemented?
The boost mode was a really neat feature.

No it was never implemented... The client part is pretty easy to do. The server part takes some work. I guess the avalaunch guys left the Xbox scene long ago.
Boost mode makes little sense in these NAS days for me, however once in while you might need to transfer something back or forth to your Xboxes and it comes in handy.
I was talking to the FlashFXP auther about adding boost client support and even gave him my BoostFTPClient.pas, but support was never added :(
If anyone wants to implement the client boost code into XBMC, you are free to PM me for my (object pascal) source
