so..

what i am trying to do here is use my xbox's f: drive to store all my music. then mount the f drive using ftp on my mac and use the mounted drive as my music library in itunes.

should work no problem, the only problem i am having is being able to transfer my music files to the "music" folder on f: whether via ftp on xbmc or mounting in finder using ftp://xbox.ip/music , which mounts, but cannot transfer.permissions are read only.

i also cannot change permissions via chmod in ftp

are permissions set in filezilla server.xml? or does this have anything to do with xbmc at all?

any suggestions?

one major obstacle in this scenario is xbox-fs (filesystem) : fatx has a 42 or 43 char limit on filenames. there are tools, see xbox-scene to simplify the xfer though.

about ftp and itunes i have no clue

thanks, i will have no problem with itunes and ftp.. just getting the files over is the problem, ill check out your suggestion.

anyone think that theres an easier way to do this?

is there a rendezvous/daap/smb server for the xbox to act as the server?

so, a part answer to my own question, i found something called mt-daapd, that can be used on linux as a daap server, how can i get this to work from xbmc?

or cant i?

you're doing this the hard way. do you know that you can leave your files on your mac and use the daap share in xbmc to connect to your mac?

tho, to answer your question, it looks like using mt-daap on a linux box will do what you want. u can keep your files on the linux box, and both xbmc and your mac should be able to connect to it via daap. i scanned thru the mt-daap forums and they have a few issues with tag reading, and playlists.

you'd be better off just using your mac.

well, using my mac is what i am trtying to avoid, i have a powerbook with an 80 gig hdd, since my music library is like 45 gigs, i am trying to free up space... and since i have over 80gig free on my xbox, thats why i chose to do it this way.

still just trying to figure out how to change write permissions on the xbox's f: drive... than ill be all set

fyi, ftp is currently the only file-server xbmc has, (no, there aree no rendezvous/daap/smb servers, search in the feature suggestions forum if you like more info on that)

i think a lot of people have this same question. my xbox is hooked directly to my main home sound sound and home theater. the xbox it is on all the time. there are a lot of set ups where keeping one's music for example on the xbox would be desirable.

i understand the developers don't have this as a priority, and as i am a user and not developer i can;t complain and can only thank you guys as i really enjoy xbmc. i just want to say that maybe not the majority but i can think of quite a few home network configurations and equipment variations where this might be desirable.
