i recently upgraded my xbmc and got bitten by the fact the new version overwrote xboxmediacenter.xml
ok, so for the future i know i need to take a copy of that so i can restore it after the upgrade.
any other config type files i need to back up in advance?
yeah, that would be a great thing to know.

you'll need to make a copy of anything you've updated and merge it into your new build. (i say merge, because lots of things can change in these config files.)
first and foremost is xboxmediacenter.xml so you dont overwrite your shares, or your other file locations like thumbs, albums, etc if you've changed them from the default.
if you made changes to the default users and paswords in the ftpserver, you'll need to keep a copy of filezilla server.xml. this typically doesnt change between versions so you can usually get away with just keeping your previous one.
if you've customized any skin files, you'll need to sync your changes up with the new skin. and if you've changed any strings in strings.xml you'll want to import them over as well.
the skin xml files and strings.xml are where alot of changes occur as new features are added. if you dont bring these up to date you'll have missing buttons, or missing text strings, stuff like that.
lastly, you'll want to make sure that your .db files are not overwritten when you install a new version.
i will sometimes make a copy of my old settings/profile xml files found in e:\tdata\0face008 so that if i need to go to an older version, i have them.
i make sure to backup my albums folder so my videos/imdb and music/cddb scans are saved.
