xbmc visualization competition
team xecuter (http://www.teamxecuter.com/) has kindly offered to donate 10 final versions of the xecuter 3 modchip (http://www.teamxecuter.com/modules.php?name=news&file=article&sid=25&mode=&order=0&thold=0) to the xboxmediacenter project for us to run this audio visualization development competition. the purpose of this competition is to develop new audio visualization plugins for xbmc and/or extend xbmc's visualisation interface, hopefully it will also encourage more programmers to join the xboxmediacenter development. the competition starts of right away and will end two months from now. all good entries (winners or not) can be integrated in xbmc, however the top-10 entries (decided by the xboxmediacenter team) will each win one state-of-the-art x3 (http://www.teamxecuter.com/modules.php?name=news&file=article&sid=34&mode=&order=0&thold=0), a top-of-the-line modchip by xecuter (http://www.teamxecuter.com/) for the xbox, so new that you can't even buy one yet, thanks team xecuter (http://www.teamxecuter.com/)!

developers wanting to create visualization plugins for xbmc might also find use of fankey's code development for the xbox dsp (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=5;t=1102)
@developers, come on, don't be shy, we love to hear if you are planning to join, what kind of visualization and your progress :)

i am new the the xbox scene and see this competition as a great way to get my feet wet. do i need the xdk to write a visualization? where can i get more information on how to get started. any help would be great.

dependance of the xdk depends of kind of viz you code, if non-directx/d3d then you may not need the xdk, much more info here (link) (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=5;t=159)

aren't there more devs that is interested in joining this competition?, where are all you developers hiding? http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif *...is it that you are developing for this contest but you want your entry to be a surprise and are waiting to announce your entrance in the last hour or do you just don't want to code this? come on and step up, we know that there are are so many talented developers out there that could do this if you wanted too, and i thought that someone would at the very least jump on the whitecap (http://soundspectrum.com/whitecap/) (src (http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/downloads/source/not-ported/whitecap_standalone_viz_src_&_winamp_src.zip)) and/or g-force (http://soundspectrum.com/g-force/) (src (http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/downloads/source/not-ported/g-force_standalone_viz_src_&_winamp_src.zip)) code by now as it's available as standalone and it's not directx. what about you other high-profile xbox homebrew devs in the scene (xport, lantus, benjeremy, eabair, team-evox, team-avalaunch, team-complex, james/unleashx, xbox-os team, team-xecuter, ...and many others that together becomes to many to mention here (we respect u all!)), any chance you will contribute with an entry? there doesn't seem to be many people joining this contest so anyone who would dare to enter could win.
ps! you don't have to take the modchip prize if you win if don't want to too, ...just in case that is what is holding you all back http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

i have a vis that i am working on right now. i have it working perfectly as a standalone xbox app, but having trouble converting it to a dll (vis) file for xmbc to load. i copied the spectrum visualization solution as a base, and modified the source to use my files. i am using more directx functions than the spectum xbox_dx8.lib is exporting, so i added the functions i needed to the def file, ran makelib.bat, and managed to get it to compile fine.
so far so good, but when i moved it on to the xbox to try out, nothing happens (with feb 12 build that is--with older builds, the xbox crashes/locks up).
i'm pretty much at a loss here on how to proceed. like i said, it works perfectly as a standalone xbe, so i'm not exactly sure why xbmc is having trouble with it.
it's based on a full particle system, so it should be pretty easy to tweak a few variables here and there and get a pretty wide range of different visualizations.
if anyone has any advice on what steps i should try next, i'd love to hear them.

oki, i've converted the g-force-plugin to the media-player! i can't convert it to the center, because i only have the old visual-studio :( perhaps in the near time i can get hold of the new one, but so long i have no chance to get it working.
beside there are some unresolved entrys in kernel32 (and perhaps in msvcr). so there is some work left.
i can upload the sources so far...
it's working great with all the scripts from the new version http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

ps! yes, you need visual studio 7.0 2002 or visual studio 7.1 2003 and xdk 5778 or later to compile xbmc & dll's for it

to be precise, i think you need the vs2003! vs2002 uses the 7.0crt and die dll-loader in the xbmc emulates the 7.1crt (which is only available in the vs2003 i think).
i'm making a zip and will upload it :)
oh, bug reports are welcome, but perhaps in another thread...

scivi would be quite hard to port to xbox for two reasons, firstly it's opengl (xdk don't support opengl) and secondly it's made as a xmms plugin (http://www.xmms.org/)

xbmc vis competition update
we got some bad news and we got some good news, depending how you look on it. the bad news is team-xecuter has let us know that the x3 has been slightly delayed so we won't have any prizes to hand out directly when the contest where about to end so we have decided to postpone the competition. the good news is that team-xecuter said they will still guarantee the prizes to the winners so we will only postpone the last submission date of the contest one month to the 18th of april 2004. this means more time for more developers to code and hand in their visualization(s), so we hope that more xbox, homebrew and visualisation programmers will step up and show us what they got.
hello,
as a dedicated user of xbmc (a big, big thanks by the way) and as a long time user of winamp, i got quite excited by the tease of new visualisations (sorely missing imho).
i have waited and waited and so was very disappointed to hear that they were going to be delayed. *i know, i know this is all for goodwill and all that, but you must understand that you have some very serious (frequent / real) users out there who will, like me be salivating at the thought of new and relaxing endings to stressful days at the office!
so in the interest of keeping things moving and to show that i am serious about this i would like to add something to the mix i cant code well, i can a little but do not have the time required to get started let alone complete a project! *i do however run a uk based software company and would be willing to donate some more prizes there is a catch i would also expect the products to receive coverage on the home page as well as have links to my site (there is as they say no such thing as a free lunch) on the main xbmc page.
i do understand that this may not be possible as you already have a sponsor but maybe as they have stumbled a little you can make room for another (along side).
the offer is real visit www.fasttrak.co.uk for a full list of products you will find we have quite a lot and i would be willing to offer you the following:
2 x darkbasic professional
2 x magix movie edit pro
1 x magix audio cleaning lab 2004
1 x magix music maker dance edition
1 x magix music maker garage edition
1 x magix music maker hip hop edition
1 x magix digital photo maker
that should add up to around £300 or so not bad. *i dont want any user details, i can ship all of this directly to you guys or whatever.
this offer is made for two reasons, one, the obvious i would like to get some free coverage for our products and the other, and truly the more important in this case i want some cool visualisations very, very selfish, but hey so what!
if you would like to discuss off site, please suggest an email address for me to follow up on.
best regards and once again many thanks for what has been the most useful usage of my xbox so far.

@bitfik, send me an e-mail and we will disuss it, however i'm not convinced that open source coders in general are interrested in retail software applications (even if they are 'for free'), maybe if you offered your "video deluxe av/dv edition" bundles or something else hw instead, ...just a thought
hi,
sorry, hardware no go... *and i'm sure legit software is always very well received especially when it comes to video editing, games programming and music creation - not like a few easy to forget games or something.
i will try and get an email to you gamester but for some reason i couldn't access from the office - perhaps you could mail my work - jon @ fasttrak .co.uk (obviously no spaces - just stops the trawlers).
regards for now...

reminder: last submission date for xbmc vis contest is this sunday, so far three entries has been submitted; fountain, saville and g-force
if you don't receive anymore entries:
my vote would be to give g-force more than one maybe 3 or 4 of the x3 chips. *it really looks sweet. *fountain was second in my opinion; it was my default until g-force. *and seville... really wasn't my taste, but i'm happy someone took the time to do it.
maybe keep the remaining chips for future submissions! first come first serve basis.
anyways i like g-force and so much i'm making another donation. *that was the last thing i was yearning for. *but then you went along and added kai("unsupported") integration (works great btw). wow!
if you can't code donate! support in anyway you can! *if you can't code or donate, write a kick ass tutorial for one of the functions of xbmc.
thank you dev's, tech support, and everyone else who has contributed time or money to best piece of homebrew period for the xbox!

i know u could remove the extra styles from the directory but there are 50 or more of them how to know which one is which!

i have just submitted my entry for the vis competition. i uploaded it to sourceforge and put it in the x3-vis category. i hope that is where i was to submit it. anyways this is my first attempt at any vis and so please be gentle. it is called starburst and is basically a circular spectrum analyzer (looks like a starburst hence the name). this is version 0.5 and i am planning to implement this in 3d with fog and particle effects (as soon as i can figure out why those features aren't working). if you need to contact me you can reach me via aim at darkmadda or via email at dylan@castlegate.net. enjoy! :d

saturn_one: i've many ideas with gforce, but some trouble in reallife... what i want to implement when i've left some time: beside an fps-display some possibility to display the current script-names. because there are scripts that don't work right. another idea: you can say the plugin the actual script-combination is good or bad and the plugin saves the infos and selects presets based on this...
dinomight: post your problems, sometimes the problems are not in the plugin itself, but in the combination xbmc<->plugin because the plugin uses functions not used (and tested) until now..

hey guys i have been making some changes to my starburst vis but i am having some trouble with it. it loads and displays properly but after about 30 secs of play my vis flickers and then dies. xbmc usually dies shortly after that. i was wondering if someone might be able to give me some guidence. i would prefer to get help via aim or msn messengers (its faster than forums.) my sn's are darkmadda (aol) and dylan_thurston@byu.edu (msn). if you think you might be able to help please contact me. thanks guys
looking at the code that is in cvs at the minute it looks like you are creating a vertexbuffer during every render call but are only releasing it in the start and stop functions.
you probably don't want to be creating a vertex buffer every frame and memcpying your data into it anyway. either create the vertexbuffer once at the start and write you data directly into or use drawprimitiveup.
you definitely do no want to be create a vertex buffer each frame. you're better off creating a vb and locking it then updating geometry than using drawprimitiveup though, especially if your data changes less than once per frame.
something else to consider - when updating vertex (and texture) data, try to write every byte in the buffer sequentially, even if they haven't changed - writing every byte is much faster than say every other byte or every other float or such due to the way write combining memory works.

just thought you guys might be interested in this, an open source milkdrop conversion:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthr....=175336 (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=175336)
it's a copy/re-implementation, not a port of the original. *but might come in handy for viz freaks ;)
it's opengl, the xbox os/xdk do not support opengl so a opengl to direct3d/directx wrapper would have to be coded first which is hard!

hey guys,
i had annother question concerning the prizes. as the release of the x3's appear to be rapidly aproaching. i was wondering if we would have the option of having getting the optional parts to the new x3's (ie the lcd's, and switch mods that will be sold optionally). i realize that team assembly were probably unaware of these features when they offered the donation, and i was just curious if these additional features would be included or made available for a small price to the prize winners. thanks again,
dinomight
p.s. i should be able to get around to finishing the sonique plugin wrapper, and starburst v2 no that school is out so stay tuned.

we don't want to be the middleman passing money along so we would only send you those options if team-xecuter add them for free.

hey guys,
it looks like the guys over at team xecuter are finally finishing up the work on the x3 chips. so guess what that means. it looks like the winners of the viz contest will finally be getting our long belated x3 prizes. i for one am very excited. i pm'ed the guys in the xecuter forums asking about the prized and they commented that you guys (the xbmc guys would be recieving the x3s in the following week or two. so it sounds like they are relying on you to handle distribution of the prizes.(correct me if i am wrong). can you guys email us when they come in so we know to be looking for them in the mail. and see if you can talk team xecuter to throw in the option lcd screens as a bonus for waiting so patiently. (the uber switches would be nice to but not as cool as the lcd). thanks again for your hard work on making xbmc the best community built open source application ever.
i look forward to your reply,
dinomight

@dinomight, you are a little quick to jump the gun, so far team-xecuter only released pictures of the final x3 chip, not the chip itself

i'm going on holiday for the next three weeks but i have confirmed with team-xecuter, they will send your modchips as soon as ready.
(yes they have your shipping-addresses. but wether or not they opt to send along a complementry lcd-display is up to them, not us).

i heard team-xecuter (re)sent the modchips to all winners, has every winner now recieved their modchip or do we need to chase them down?
