ok i just bought a xbox made dvd remote and infared port. now i have searched the online manual and on the forums for this answer with no avail.

when i plug in my remote is there anything that i have to change in the keymapping.xml in order to work it with xbmc or should it just "work".

it will work by default in xbmc (if it's a the xbox remote by microsoft), you only need to touch keymapping.xml if you like to re-map the buttons usage
