i finally got around to trying out the subtitles in xbmc and they were rather difficult to read when against a brighter background. *i looked at mplayer and it has a command line argument (-ffactor) that resamples the alphamap of the subtitle fonts to change the size of the black borders. *the function is already there, so would it be possible for you to add a control to thicken or reduce the borders around the subtitles? *if they were just a little thicker, they would be much easier to read in some circumstances.
