View Full Version : SAMBA-Server built-into XBMC (share SMB/CIFS from Xbox)
i'd like to be able to read from my xbox though smb. would be nice to for instance mount a network drive on my computer with the contents of my xbox.

yeah, i just registered to second this.
smb would be great cus it's easy to update stuff like ini files and arrange stuff using smb.
i think it'll make me use it as a dashboard rather than evox.
please please please put it in.
i third this! *this would make my xbox a true media centre if i can stick a large harddisk in my xbox and store all my movies/mp3s on it then mount the xbox drive on my laptop via smb!!!

...then please ask the nice man (duo) in a very polite way if he would not mind porting the samba (http://www.samba.org) server after he's finished porting the client code over xbox and into xbmc

mr duo sir, it would be awfully splendid of you if you could port the samba server code to xbmc after you have finished your excellent work porting the samba client code! *:)

this is a feature i'd really like, as i hope to have several xboxes in my house each with a different primary function. *i'm planning to have an xbox for games (avalaunch), one for movies (xbmc, in the living room) and one for music (xbmc, in my stereo system). *with the samba server, i'd be able to access the stereo system xbox via samba to play music in my living room on the movies xbox, as well as be able to access the movies and music from my pc. *i also live with several other people who have an xbox and/or pc and would like access to both movies and music. *so basically for me, this would be a great function to have. *duo, if you're out there, i'd be eternally grateful if you could port the samba server code to xbmc.
hi all.
my first concern, the one that i'm working on when i have the time, is to get fully functional samba client code working. once that is done, i do have plans to get a samba server working but that could be a ways off.

if anyone on the dev/support team checks this, i'm in need of this feature too...
i'm also prepared to help port the smb server if nobody's currently working on this... i couldn't find a general dev team email on the site (though i admit i didn't look too hard :) ), but if someone wants to drop me a mail (pete_xbmc at monkeyspannered dot com), i'll see what i can do.
i got relevant development experience and stuff, so if someone wants to get in touch, i can start this pretty much asap.

is it possible to implement a samba server?
i want to share my mp3 from the xbox harddisk over samba.
the real use for this would be an elegant way to stream media and transfer files between xboxs (xboxen). would makes things like taking your xbox over to a friends network and transfering games real easy like. a definite improvement over just using ftp...
you can use fxp for direct box to box transfers...
Gamester17

personaly the most important reason i see for implementing a smb-server is so users can map a network drive on a pc without 3rdparty sw
it's great being able to access computers on a network with smb, but i'd really like to be able to access my xbox from windows/linux e.g. \\xbox\... etc. is it possible to setup a samba server for xbmc. i say this because i use my xbox to store some files that i'd like to access/stream from windows.
i'd love to see a samba server running in xbmc. i don't have 'spare' storage, anytime i get a new hd i tend to fill it. to be able to just stream stuff back and forth would be ideal and i can't wait to see it implemented.
/kudos
any status update on samba server?
i would definately like to see this implemented.
now i have a large hdd in my xbox i've offloaded some videos but would love to be able to 'share' them with other pc's in the house.
i'd go as far as saying i'd make xbmc my default dash if this happened!
heres hoping, fingers crossed 'n' all that!
well it is possible, the xenium chip folks just implemented a samba server in their chip's os and i have to say, it's really cool!
really hope the xbmc team gets on this for the next release or v 1.0.
that is because there are probably running a stripped version of linux on there chip. and since samba is written for linux this is easier todo then running it on xbmc.
anyway it would be nice to see the source of it too if they changed it.

well guys, i have a load of flac/mp3/divx files on the xbox (hdd is bigger than on my pc) which i would like to be able to stream to pc. basically use the xbox as a server to the pc. is this at all possible? i can mount the ftp in windows but when i browse the files it has to download a whole file before playing.
any ideas?
thanks for any help
nope not possible, unless you want to install and run a linux server.
xbmc and other dash's only only contain the clients for protocols such as smb not server software.

i'm sure someone has mentioned this before, but i'll ask anyway just in case....
i notice you can access your computer's network from the xbmc. *the xbmc allows you to use the x-box to access files from your computer. this is one of the xbmc greatest features, but wouldn't it be even better if the xbmc allowed two way access of files so you could also use your pc to access files from your x-box, automatically, without having to establish a ftp connection? so essentially, when you goto your pcs my networks folder you would see a special folder for the x-box with all the x-box drives in it. i'm not sure if this is even possible, but it's something to think about.
for example, this feature would allow users to edit and move files on their x-box without having to connect to their ftp. (i usually have problems connecting to my ftp. i end up having to go back and forth several times between my pc and my x-box before i can establish a connection. this feature might make life alot easier for a few users.
*bump* :p
any progress so far?
i don't think anyone are working on it :(
shame, would love to see a samba server too in xbmc :)

i'm trying a workaround at home - i have a gentoo linux box in my lan at home and have patched the kernel with the lufs patch and installed lufs which allows me to mount ftp shares and access them in linux. my plan is to make this mountpoint available as a samba share, but i haven't gotten to the point where i can access it yet. i can see the share from my windows computers, but get "access denied" when trying to browse the share. i'll keep you updated on the details.
just wondering, anyone working on this project?

to clear up some space on my computer, i moved my music, pics, and videos to my xbox. is there a way to access these files on my pc other than ftp, like an xmbc smb server?
i would like to access them from time to time when i'm using my laptop in another section of the house.
i was thinking about putting a small linux distro to act as a file server, but i'm not to keen on the idea of moving 50gb back onto my computer so i can format my xbox f drive.

i have the xenium ice chip. *since it has a samba server, how would i set this up then?
have you got this?
xenium-os v2.0 user manual (http://www.teamxodus.com/pictures/manuals/xenium-os%20v2.0%20user%20manual.pdf)
it tells you how to set it up. i can't get mine to work but i'm still running xenium os v2 pre-release. later releases are supposed to address some of the smb issues, if you're game enough to upgrade that is. i'm happy with ftp.
acutaly i got smb shares working! i have the pre-release also. the only issue is that you have to use dhcp in order to use the smb server. works perfectly though.
hello
i love xbmc alot very very cool software makes the xbox worth 10x more....
but i hate ftp sorry i just cant stand ftp transfers there so boring logging everything damn thing thats transfered and you have to log in and run another program its just stupid cant even double click a picture without downloading it... *
i was wondering if xbmc could run a samba server similar too gentoox too allow the xbox to show out its hard drives/dvd drive so you could map network drives. making it easyer to edit and install files too the xbox it would also be nice so you can play video / music / pictures over the network so you wouldnt have to have 2 copys of everything. (i take my xbox too friends houses alot and i like having my videos/music/pictures with me)
this would be a really awesome idea becuse if your computer has a capture card you could have ur capture program save right into ur video folder on your xbox so when you get home from work/or where ever you could just sit down pop on the tv/xbox and watch ur recorded show.
thanks alot keep up the good work :kickass:

you know what i hate. when someone registers and makes their first post to this forum as a "me too" or a " i didnt search before asking this" or in this case "i know its already been answered in the same thread as im asking again" type question...
no
the answer is no it cant run a server.
did you even read this thread??
i figured a way that works better than opening up an ftp client, but it's still ftp.... just doesn't look like it.
you can access all the content in windows explorer but can't stream anything or view thumbnails and stuff cause its still ftp. you can browse the content and if you want something specific, copy it to your computer and view it locally.
here's how to set it up.
if you right click on my computer and choose map network drive.
then click the text link at the bottom "sign up for online storage or connect to a network server."
then for the address enter info like this: ftp://xbox:xbox@192.168.0.105 ... where the ip is your xboxs...
then it will show up in windows explorer. remember it's using ftp but it just is easier then firing up an ftp client, for me at least.
and i also would love a samba server to be added to xbmc... being able to stream content from the xbox (espically since everyone has huge hard drives in them with all there media) would be awesome.... nothings impossible ;)

as a previous guy wrote but seemed to be ignored i'll write it again as i also have done this for a couple of years. it's not perfect but is almost as good as having a proper network share and quicker and more convenient than using a standard ftp. you can't move files, you'll have to copy then delete and you may need to use flashfxp for certain ftp things still, but it does make things easier. you cannot map a drive to it but the name will persist through reboots under network places off file explorer, making it very convenient. at least try it...
go to my network places on file explorer
double click 'add network place'
click next
select 'choose another network location' (prolly only option)
click next
type:-
ftp://xbox:password@10.0.0.90/
into 'internet or network address' box
substituting password with your xbox ftp password and sub 10.0.0.90 with your xbox static ip (set xbox to use static ip if currently using dchp)
click next
type the name xbox
click next
click finish
now you can always quickly get to your xbox under 'my network places'. you may also want to map ftp://xbox:password@10.0.0.90/f/games/
to xbox_games for convenience. i do...
streaming from pc to xbox works great, but if have all my stuff on the xbox, can i stream from the xbox to a computer? i tried using smb to my xbox ip, but it didnt work...
thanks fellas
personally, i'd love to see this feature. my xbox is always on and if its not only takes a few seconds to boot. i have a huge hd on the xbox and would love to be able to stream from it.
however it doesnt seem to be important to many developers as threads on the subject suggest.
i wish i had the skills to add it to the project.
hopefully someday it will be added.
is it possible to add smb server support to xbmc? we already have the smb client that works great, but a server would be far more user friendly than the current ftp (altough adequate). the server could either be totally without security or have two simple layers of access; one read only account and one full control account. this functionality would greatly simplify the task of moving files to/from the xbox. i undertand that xbmc already uses samba for smb functionality. smb server support is also available in samba. another thing would be full integration with samba or windows letting the xbox be browsable from the network, let you use accounts from the domain database for access control and secure channels, but i guess we do not have the memory or resources available on the xbox to do that. anyway, thanks for a great product.
i too would like this not so much from a file moving point of view but for audio and video stored on my xbox. i need all the space on my pc for pc stuff and like to keep all my media on my 120gb hd in my xbox. but from time to time i want to listne to my mps' on my xbox and this means i have to ftp the tracks i want :(
search and you would now its been asked multiple times and the answer is unfortunately no
i got 100mbit/s network between my lappy and xbox. i only have 40 gigs of hd in my lappy so i would like to share the xbox hd as "network drive" so my xbox would show up on my network neigbourhood. is this possible? ftp is too clumsy.
this has been asked sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many times.
quick answer no.
long answer, xmbc does not (and i believe may never have) a samba server built in.
if you must share via samba, get a xenuim mod chip or live with smb.
ps, use the search button
edit: see that sentence above "...or live with smb." should read "... or live with ftp" my bad!

its still ftp.
you can just make a shortcut in xp (yes i know there will be no drive letter!)
try this, right click desktop, select new->shortcut, set the location to ftp://xbox:xbox@192.168.0.100 (set address as required) & that works but its still ftp.
it will not be a normal share in your workgroup / domain.
i know it's still ftp but he asked for a solution in which the xbox would show up as a networkdrive. that's what webdrive does.
show up as a networkdrive
it shows up as a mapped drive! (is there a difference - ie does it show up in network neighbourhood?)
i know it's still ftp
he said ftp is too clumbsy!.
if he must use samba, then i believe the xenuim is the only way at the moment. *
if he simply wants a drive letter, webdrive will do that
if he want's quick access to xbox folders, a shortcut will do the trick (is free too!).
anyway, each to their own! *i personnaly prefer flashfxp as you can queue tons of shit up - to many different folders / from many different sources, then hit transfer & go have a coffee while it does its thang!
regards - steve.
i think the problem with this is that there isnt any easily ported smb server libraries yet... at least i dont think the people who did the unix smb client library that xbmc uses released a server one.

i (we) ve got always 0,0000001% chance
it is more that the lottery :d
why don't people want to just put big hard disks in their pcs and use them to serve their whole network? i only turn my xbox on when i want to use it, i leave my pc on 24/7. i can put an xbox in every room of my house and have streaming audio/video everywhere. i've only got one right now but i'm moving soon and we will have multiple units then. it seems only natural to me that you have a beefy pc as a server and lots of "cheap" xboxes as clients.
mickeyiec
2005-02-02, 10:23
when you go in hollidays, friends, every where, it s easyer to take the xbox than a pc.
for exemple
you have a party by your friend, everyone have a pc now, so he wants you to take mp3 for dancing all the night. in my notebook, i don t have 200 giga of hard drive so i took my xbox. and if his pc fails we can always hear music directely with the tv.
i think this is very strange. why isn't it possible? (i have searched the forum, but cannot find a reason, nor any previous posts about this.) on my dreambox the samba server package is only 329 kb, which we could probably strip further. if memory is an issue, we could have an option to disable ftp and only run smb.
it's not impossible at all.
you are free to implement it
why not use the ftp to network brigde?
it is sofware that does this availeble that makes a ftp drive look like a network disc.
i think i read about it on the evox site.
well, that package is not running in normal ms os we are, but in linux. the problem is that samba creates new processes for each connection and ms os only support 1 process totally. ie, a pain to figure out how to port.

you can't cause there is no samba server for the xbox and ftp don't allow you to stream.
only solution in know of is webdrive (http://www.southrivertech.com/) which kinda emulates samba access via ftp (but isn't perfect).

hi to all__--
running the new 050205 build- works great love the new features and getting use to the new feel. just got another xbox, one with a huge hd and a database of movies on it and one with a smaller 100g drive and would like to stream media to and from. i also have to 2 pcs with samba sharing music and video from them to the both xboxes, but cant seem to get the xboxes to talk to eachother.
and does any editors still work with xbmc rather than doing it manually.
any thing that points me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated *

this may be way off but i only need part functionality for what i'm doing. i need to rip audio cd's to my server - i've just been told i can't do this. i also (after many pages reading the same question :)) now know that you can't run an smb share on an xbox - only the client. but - when looking in th wiki manual i found something sort of related to my needs - junctions
see this - http://manual.xboxmediacenter.de/wakka.p....&v=19xs (http://manual.xboxmediacenter.de/wakka.php?wakka=junctionsexplained&v=19xs)
if i could run this on the xbox and point my cdda rip path to this - which had a symbolic (or hard) link to another hard drive then wouldn't that work? if that worked it would be a bit complicated but would do what many other folk need too.
of course this may be even more impossible than running an smb server on the xbox :) - any thoughts?
you cant run junction on the xbox. are you sure you cant set your cd rip location to a smb:// url? support for writeable shares was added.
i really dont understand why anyone would want to rip cd's from their xbox. do it on your computer. it'll be faster, and you have more encoding options.
LDocherty
2005-05-09, 19:42
ripping movies and audio on a pc is easy and faster - correct - but i can't train my wife to do this - (she wouldn't and couldn't be interested if she tried - she "has a life" *as she puts it :)). however, she will use the remote control to do it. i too would find it easier and i'm not in that much of a hurry.
so you see - not all reasoning is for better technology :)

the only way i know of is to use a program called webdrive, which shows your xbox as a networked drive in windows. it's not perfect but far more userfriendly than using an ftp client.
thanks for your reply.
not the most free of solutions to this problem though. :verysad: 20 day trial for a $50+ program.
it still does ftp only though. let's say i start a media file from the webdrive folder, it copies the whole file over before starting. nowhere near as graceful as smb.
think xbmc would ever support making smb shares?

hi
i have 3 x-boxes running on my home network, (wireless network),
my problem is i cannot work out how to access movies stored on one x-box from another on the system
all machines are running 250gb drives, and i have movies on 1, music on a second, and tv shows on the 3rd.
i was hoping to be able to access the drives in each machine remotely thru xmbc from all the other x-boxes on the network
is this possible at all, or are the other x-boxes not accessible like a standard network share
any information would be appreciated.
thanks

yeah... i thought this would be a neat idea but then i thought.. wait a minute.. im gonna have to walk around my house and turn on each box just to have access to everything.. and i didnt want to leave them running all the time.. it makes more sense to put that big hard drive into your computer and keep hd's just big enough to fit the games you want on the boxs
i have been moving all of my media to a 200 gig drive in the xbox.
now i need it to have the samba server built in.
is ftp the only option? i would love to mount the xbox drive on other 'puters, etc.
please port the samba server code!

please read the thread that you've posted in. it's been outlined that a smb server is infeasible at present.
why put all your media in an xbox? it would be far better suited to keep it on a computer and just share from there.

how about being able to have a samba server in xbmc. i have a mythtv box that could map the xbmc files if it supported samba. or if someone has multiple xboxes

bump...i understand it's not regarded as a feasible idea, but i think it is possible. if the smbd were compiled as a dll it could be loaded on demand. obviously you would want it loaded all the time which would be rather memory intensive, but i have another idea. first it could be added as an option, "enable smbd usage when in gui" or something to that effect. i am thinking there could be events that would unload the smbd dll when the additional mem is needed like when playing music, movies, etc. that way you can just leave your box on and as long as it is not currently watching a video the smb daemon would be running thus allowing you to connect. for those who don't want to use it just disable it and it will never be loaded. just a thought, would be great if a dev would comment on this idea.

personaly i think a built-in samba-server would overkill for xbmc, instead much more usefull would be a built-in xbmsp-server (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=1219) (and a ccxstream-client for pc).

just spent a bit of time reading through the thread, but i'm still a little curious if it is natively supported by windows...reason i ask is if you think about the mass amount of users they are windows users so in my opinion it would be best to use whatever protocol is natively supported and simplest to configure without the end user having to download and use additional apps. just my opinion, i am still a little under educated on xbmsp protocol but as far as i know you need a seperate client for it to connect. i will spend a little more time reading about the protocol.

@los93sol: judging by the majority of support question in these forums (and by all the non-computer litterary people i know) i would argue that most microsoft windows-xp (etc.) end-users don't know how setup a basic network and configure a smb-share in windows (which also requires them to add a user-account and set permissions), and most xbmc end-users have had xbmc either installed by someone else or by a automated-homebrew-installation-script and they don't understand how to configure the samba-client via xboxmediacenter.xml (and the majority of those who does learn do so out of nessesity and not because they wish to learn), (plus before doing that the need to learn who to configure the network on the xbox side too if they are not on dhcp, and even if they are on dhcp they still need to figure out the ip-address of the windows computer which is harder than you might think without help for a illitterary person).
...the xbmsp protocol on the other hand supports 'auto-discovery' which means zero configuration on the network side, right now with the xbmsp-server on the pc side and the xbmsp-client in xbmc you just have to install a xbmsp-server (ex. ccxgui (http://ccxgui.xboxmediacenter.de)) on the pc and then drag-and-drop the folder or files you which to share and that is it!, ...and if a xbmsp-server was build-into xbmc that would be even simpler for the end user as the shares would already be pre-configured on the xbmc-side (by automaticly using the existing shares in xboxmediacenter.xml) so all the end-user would have to do is install the xbmsp-client application on the pc, it would automaticly discover the shares and automaticly map them to a new volume.

ah. i should have read up more thoroughly on it before posting my response sorry for that. that being the case i have to agree with you that it would be better for that specific group. personally i like to keep things fluent and everything else i use is samba so i would still prefer it, but i do see a major benefit to xbmsp with auto-detection especially for sharing files between xboxes. if i am undestanding correctly the server could be built for xbmc so the user could configure what to share via the xml with the obvious defaults already in place. then install the client/server app on any pc's and setup the shares on those as well so you could very easily handle all of your media sharing on one simple protocol throughout the entire network. my question then is what about security? is xbmsp an internal protocol only, or is it possible to reach those shares from the outside? sorry for the questions about it, i am getting a bit off-topic now, but i haven't been able to locate too much info pertaining to the securities of the protocol. it appears to be a ccxstream variant but i haven't found anything to verify that.

xbmsp supports username/password security (just like smb/samba), if you have a nat router/firewall it will block the xbmsp port (but you can open it for internet streaming if you like). this is now gettings way off-topic, i just wanted you all to consider xbmsp before smb/samba because smb/samba is overkill for xbmc, xbmsp is designed for streaming, smb/samba is not. for file-transfers just use ftp!
ps! @los93sol, remeber that you are what we call a "power-user" and thus you're in a minority, (it also means there's no excuse for you being lazy :p)

is it possible to set up shares from the xbox's drives?

because of xbmc i'm using my xbox mainly as a media machine, and because of it i also copy all my media files to the xbox (like television shows and movies).
sometimes i would like to watch these shows on my pc and was wondering what my best option would be and how would i do this?
can i treat my xbox folders as shares that will allowing me to access them directly from windows xp? or am i stuck having to ftp the data over first?
any help on this issue would greatly be appreciated.

the best solution right now is to buy a xenium and setup the smb server on that. *and when you need to access files via smb just boot it to the chip instead of xbmc. (i have the eject button booting the chip and the power button booting xbmc, it's an easy setup) *that's what i do right now. *still hoping for the smb server in xbmc though.
(and no, i don't think they can port it, their focus is cromwell based legal oss, i don't think they'd even know how to port it to xmbcs xdk code.)
thx herald -will do as i have a xenium

i would like to see smb service on the xbox, not the current client as it is. a simple 1 client smb server, perhaps remove the http control server.

hi,
i took a look in the manual, but all i found was a description how to load my files from my local pc to xbox.
i need it the other way around. i have a xbox with a big hdd and a laptop. is there any way to use xbmc as a file server in the network? if not is there a plugin or something which could support me with that functionality?
thanks

its not available yet but its something ive been working on
i would recommend using linux. it is easier than it sounds, x-dsl loopback install is very easy and can be started by a simple xbe...
when do you like to have the first alpha?
i would be the first to test! :-)
linux is an alternative, i will test it , but right now i'm very happy with xbmc which is a great piece of software!

first of all, thaks for making xbmc, i also wanted to be able to stream vids and music from my xbox hdd without having to download them to my pc hdd. i can understand that smb server in xbmc is not a solution but how about this: you could make smth like the xbmc http remote control page and from there somehow to be able to open vids on xbox like streams mms: etc... with any media player. i mean a web interface to access and stream those files... i got this idea from this post that shows a way to stream files from xbox. http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin....+videos (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=8;t=16625;hl=stream+videos)

currently xbmc has a client. to do what you are wanting would require a server. there was talk for a time but i think that was the extent of it. more than likely i would suggest the ftp for mass file moving about.
would be nice if you could share the folders on the xbox.
this gives easy access to the xbox, and the opportunity to play dvd's over the network.

this has been suggested before and has been determined that it requires too many resources. a better solution would be a xbmsp server. with this method all xboxes on the network would be able to autodetect eachother so there would be no end user configuration necessary. of course something like this would have to be able to be turned off, especially for those of us running high def resolutions. my suggestion for this would be to have the server built into a dll and have events toggle the server on and off which would significantly increase performance if the server side decided to play a video. by the same token this presents a limitation that if the server is streaming a video to another box on the network the other box would have to stop the video. i'm sure a creative developer could sort out this issue, but i have no idea what would be the best way to get around that limitation.

wouldnt it be possible to port the samba server to the xbox and let it run standalone (not within xbmc) ?
been through faqs and forum. lots on sharing pc hdds can't find anything on xbox hdd being shared on network.
i am set up sharing drives (smb) on two pcs, one xp media center, other win98se as media file storage. all on personal network behind firewall. works great. no problem ftp access.
running xbmc 1.1 with 250gb drive so have f and g volumes i would like to share with pcs.
is this possible? how?
thanks for any comments.
okay, then is there a way to add a samba server to my unit so it will turn the xbox hdd into a shared drive?
thanks for the feed back
sure.

does anyone see any problems with xbmc operating in this setup?

not possible. the article you reference describes how to install linux and run samba. nothing wrong with that except that linux and xbmc can't run at the same time. so at any given moment your xbox is either a fileserver or it runs xbmc. not both.

i've looked around for an answer for this question...but i have found nothing so assume the features do not exist... please help...
basically i generally use my xbox to listen to music, view pictures etc... occassionally though i use my pc.
ideally i'd like to store all these files on my xbox (as well as my pc as a backup). this would be useful because i can simply turn on my xbox and within 20 seconds or so xbmc is running. but how can i share these files across my lan to windows xp clients from the xbox with samba shares. web and ftp access to the xbox are fine - the problem is making the xbox almost act like a windows workstation or server.
i have played around with xbmc but unless i am missing something really obvious i just assume i can't do it.
if you have any suggestions i'd be really grateful.
the first 'obvious' thing you're missing is following the forum rules.
search. this has been discussed and explained over and over again; there is no smb server in xbmc, hence it's not possible.

hello.
i've got a question about sharing my xbox hard drive over smb.
but first:
1) i checked the xbmc faq.
2) i spent about two hours searching through these forums for the answer.
neither worked. so ... i'm asking the community.
here's what i want to do: set up an smb share from within xbmc (i'm using it as my main dash) so that i can copy a large number of files to the 250 gig hard drive i just installed (inside the xbox).
i have ftp access to my xbox and could use that server to accomplish this, but using a network share arrangement should be faster.
all of the faqs and posts i've read seem to pertain to accessing shares set up on another computer and streaming media from those shares to the xbox. but i want to host my multimedia files directly on my xbox and have an ongoing share set up so i can move more stuff over quickly and easily.
i have checked the smb section inside the xbmc setting menu, but, no matter what i try, i can not seem to get the xbox to pop up inside my network workgroup.
thanks.

there is no smb server built into xbmc, so you can't do what you want to do.
no server? that's what i was beginning to suspect. i guess i'll have to use the built-in server on my xenium chip to tranfer the files and then use ftp from within xbmc to do maintenance.
i'm running evox. any idea if a different bios (avalaunch, x2, etc) might have a built-in smb server?
still. xbmc is the best. it is amazing. running a different dash just because it has an smb server would not be an option.
thanks.
i wanted ecatly the same and use my xbox as a file-server inside my network.
that way me and my girlfriend can easily access, download or upload files to and from the xbox and play mp3's from it.
i want to use "netdrive" (http://www.acs.uwosh.edu/novell/netdrive.htm)
but i can connect only one user at a time. is there a setting i can change or maybe add users? so i can have multiple connections?
i have already searched the whole internet, but without installing linux, i can not turn my xbox into a fileserver.
which means, i will always have to download stuff to my desktop first, and then ftp it to the xbox. also i own a 1.6 version, so this means that it will need extra attention installing linux on the xbox.
it would be so nice if the xbox could be the file-server inside my network. that way my and my girlfriend can easily store/access media-files from our computers and through the xbox.
are there any plans on adding this service to xbmc? or maybe evoltuion or some other dashboard?

a smb-server is possible ... but you need one who codes it.
no one did it yet -> it´s not in xbmc.
feel free to write a patch to add smb to xbmc. :saint:
sure, it's possible.
but it would require a major rewrite of much of the samba basecode.
reason; it fork()'s on each connection. the xbox only allows one process at a time, hence no fork().
iow; it's far from trivial.

if all the fuss about this is to access xbox like you do all other files from harddrive, why not just use a ftp mapping software.
i just tried novells netdrive (free), and it seems to work good.

you will get a own drive for your xbox in windows explorer.

netdrive seems nice, but it still uses ftp-commands.
this means you still can not play/stream audio and/or video-files from the xbox to the pc.
i already tried this program, for file-transfers it is just fine. but then again, for file-transfers you could also just use an ftp program.
no we want real smb-service...
i see.
i have a different use pattern than you.
i store all media on pc, and then stream that to xbox.
that way i can play the media on pc and xbox.

Hello,
I suggest to developp a SMB/SAMBA serveur (not client) to use the xbox as a NAS.
We could share into each PC of the houses the file stored into the xbox!
My dream!
Dade
this has been suggested an estimated 18 million times already.
it's not possible without many months of work and extreme re-writes to the standard SAMBA software.
the Xbox can only have one process thread running at a time, while the standard SAMBA server "needs" to be able to run multiple threads.
the only way to do a SAMBA server on an Xbox is to run Linux. at that point, Xbox = super quiet cheapjack server rig :) just add a giant ass harddisk and the Cromwell BIOS and you're all set ;P

jarenback... geminiserver is working on dreambox integration, when that's done it should be possible to use dreambox as tuner for xbmc making recording possible etc... more info if you search.
until then you can set up a samba on a pc and record to there and watch it from the xbox. the dreambox video output is horrible compared to xbmc at 720p.
I use FTP to connect to my DM 7020 and watch my recordings but sadly it often messes up either the Dreambox or XBMC

Is Upnp Server an Alternative to a Samba Server and is it a better choice for xbmc.
KingJames
2006-12-01, 00:43
What is the difference between a samba and upnp server?
Samba is CIFS protocol (aka, Windows networking) which is meant for accessing remote file shares not really for streaming. UPNP is strictly a streaming service. It uses HTTP as its underlying protocol, and it uses XML for its file listings.
Is there a way to share my xbox drive with SMB so I can see it as part of my workgroup in XP ?
It would make it a lot easier when extracting files as I could do it directly to xbox instead of having to extract locally then ftp.
no.

Just wondering if inclusion of an SMB server in XBMC has been considered or would even be possible? Just thinking that it may be easier to work with for moving data back and forth to an Xbox from a PC instead of using FTP, and XBMC to XBMC communications could (maybe?) benefit as well.
Hoping I'm not asking something that has been asked before, but searches of the wiki and forums didn't turn up anything. Thanks for all the work put into this project, I consider XBMC *the* reason to mod an Xbox.
-Whoopin'
considered, wanted, many times. i bet searching on forum shows up bunches. current samba would be to hard todo thou as it requires multiple processes which can't be done on the xbox
I don't understand.
The Xenium OS by TeamXodus (http://www.teamxodus.com/) has samba built in . So obviously it can be done on the XBOX, why is it so hard to implement in XBMC?
cause they use linux as os and we use the xdk
It would be really sweet if we'd be able to mount a share on a XBOX in windows. So no FTP client is needed to manage files on the XBOX. I realize this must have been discussed before but I can't find any threads about this at the moment.
This feature is not of great importance, but it would be 'nice'. So maybe implementing samba isn't such a big deal and someone want's to do it? I wouldn't have a clue where to start.
it is a big deal, the samba server forks() on each connection
So for each connection a new session is created and this creates a to big performance impact on the XBOX? I'm a PHP programmer.... This is what I understand from googling fork().

Think HUGE memory leak, ...and the Xbox only have 64MB or total memory (which is shared between the system and graphics).
Ah, there is the thread :)
Thank you for clarifying that!
even worse.
the xbox doesnt support fork(). the xbox can only run one process at a time
