View Full Version : Retro - New skin for XBMC
i made new skin. it's called retro and has only original graphics. there are some remains of the hifi skin in there but i've got onklebouncys permition to publish it in current state. i uploaded it to http://www.xboxmediaplayer.it/upload
i'm actually not sure where it ends up and is available from by doing this? anyone? but as it is in an alpha/beta state i don't want to put it on allxboxskins yet.
it is my full intention to create my own graphics for these parts too. please do test it and give comment on it here. hope you like it! :)

i like it veeeeery much. :)
especialy the idea of the main menu. (maybe you can use a picture of an old pc/console instead of the x, oh and while i am suggesting things maybe an animated gif of some useless analog displays on the main screen).
for all ppl who wanna try this great skin you can grab it here (http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/retro_by_floink_0.1.rar).
**edit: updated both links to the new version
floink keep up the good work *http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
thanx :)
i uploaded a new one where i removed a bunch of *.bak files which are not supposed to be in there. maybe u could update the link hullebulle?
the pc idea could work, yupp... and the analog stuff youre talking about is in the worx. the clock is supposed to look like the little spinning progress thing you had on old tape recorders (needs tweaking though)... i'm planning to ad gifanim to each 'window' using the pictures from the main screen.

ok i updated the file. :)
same link = here (http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/retro_by_floink_0.1.rar)
great looking skin,
please ditch the big green x though, a old console like hullebulle suggested would suit it much better, i think so anyway.
kudo's dude.
i made some icons by modifying the existing ones, so i had to do some reouche and i was quite lazy, so don't expect too much...
the images are a bit too realistic compared to the original ones, but as i said i was quite lazy...
you can download the whole set here (http://mitglied.lycos.de/loeth/my_programs.rar) including .psd - files. u just have to extract the files from the folder with the set u want ot the /media directory of your retro-skin folder and overwrite the existing ones
it includes a commodore 64, a classic macintosh and a nintendo es

i hope its ok for the author, that i edited your files, i really love ur theme.
glad you like it... thanx *:)
and ofcourse you're free to do anything you like with the skin. it is an open source project which i presume applies to skins aswell... but as for code it will have to go through quality control before it's included *http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
still... have patience and you'll have an updated verison of the skin where you'll have pictures looking more like the other ones. patience, patience my friend...
oh and i've been trying to keep devices in the 70s' so i guess it'd have to be a pong console or something like that?

love the retro skin and iv spent hours tweaking it to fit my ws tv.
one thing boothers me and i cant find a fix for it...
when looking in music and unsing list mode i see the icon in front of my mp3 files fine. but after i scaned all mp3s i dont get the icon in front of my mp3 files... but i get an icon in front of folders and m3u´s...
strange problem? haven't noticed it myself. scan of mp3s takes me a couple of hours so i haven't bothered.
can you see if the same problem exist in hifi skin? thats what i started of with.
(been thinking of doing the retro skin as a ws-skin as i have a ws tv myself)
will try hifi...
let me know if you want my ws tweaked retro if you wanna start from there...
can you see if the same problem exist in hifi skin? thats what i started of with.
yes, the music icon after scan shows in hifi... *:(
iv looked and looked but cant find anything why it dosent work in retro...
congratulations on this skin. it is beautiful. its my default skin now.
look forward to seeing more skins from you.
couple of minor suggestions:
-the shutdown, reboot buttons on the main screen could be larger/clearer or also have their own graphic.
-the red selected buttons on the settings pages could be clearer and lighter in color. it is not obvious to me when they are selected.
thanks again for a great skin.

a minor bug i noticed.
enter my music, highlight a button to the right, now hit down several times till the last button looses focus,*bang* you are stuck. :)
guess the "ondown" for the last button to the right is set wrong.
dunno if this happens in all skins or only in retro (to be honest i was to lazy to test). will try it this evening and report if this is a common issue.
anyway great work with the skin. :)
i've actually noticed this one myself. the <ondown> is there in the xml but the problem is the <id></id> tags. it is a bit complex since the upgrade of mymusic to consist of several <windows> and i'm not sure if i can change around in the <id> tags? haven't had the time to test it but from what i can read the last buttons' <ondown> in the mymusic****.xml seems to be pointing towards <id>s' of mymusicplaylist.xml. and maybe it's supposed to be like that?
dunno... my solution has been to use the back button... back to main menu.

ps
right now i'm working hard on updates of gfx for buttons, folders and such. but it turns out i'm very picky about the look of these... but i'm having a lot of fun :)

dunno why it should point to a button on another windows. in my opinion it should point to the first button (on the top). but i noticed that i was wrong with my first report.
the highloight gets lost if you press down while "scan" is highlighted. so i guess the ondown id just don't point to the "record" button.
ps: if it is possible to use a gif for this it would be pretty cool if the record (shown while playing a music file) spins. :p
is this what you are referring to?

hope this helps.

thanx tslayer those are the ones. remeber seeing that post some time ago but forgot about it :) i know it's right now cuz id 19 and 24 are the ids from mymusicplaylist.xml i mentioned...
i guess for the info about the change in cvs (mediacenter) could go out to skinners in some way? at least if the skin was started on before 01-06?
/floink
ps
san9jay thanx for the feedback. i have a bad conscience about those check boxes in settings. i am reworking them to have a higher quality.

ive just installed the latest ***** release and have noticed it has a new version of your great skin. a question though, whats with the broken button and the tv you can only just see on the left. have you hooked up your xbox to a tv or are you hopping the xbox will eventually turn into a tv as well :)
that is for tv-guide when/if it comes.
@floink
hope you dont minde me answering... ;)

don't you dare to remove the nice moving gif of the broken button!!!
gives it such a high tech look :)
great work on your skin!!
you r the first with moving gifs.. it finally happened..
thank you.
thx alot! i'm quite happy with it myself now :)
no probs ktd. you're correct in that answer. i thought it'd be like a litte nudge in the side for the devs too http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif even though xmltv for sweden is currently down.
the dash shutdown and reboot buttons are actually gifanims too.
moving gifs is fun though there seems to be some incompabilities with the gif standard in the xbmc implementation. thats why i had to do a 0.5mb gif which actually contains 200 frames.
i cant set different timing for different frames and the frames must be set to "restore to background" or it'll look like crap.
i have a lot of more fun ideas for moving gifs for the retro skin and will do them when i find the time.
/floink
just tried the new 2004-02-01 build and noticed the changes in the retro skin.
here are my 2 cents.
the good:
- i like the new reboot/reset buttons. much larger and clearer.
- also like the animated gif/broken button.
the ok:
- the new settings buttons on the settings page is better than before but could still be clearer. maybe a switch to green for the enabled state rather than the current red would make it more obvious.
the not so good:
- i find the selection highlighting for the main buttons is not obvious enough. the older release was better in my opinion on this regard.
- im not in favor of the change in the background color when browsing files/folders etc. the older release had the same background color as the main background and looked more polished in my opinion.
keep up the great work on this skin. its my default skin for xbmc.

i looooove the animated gif. http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
my-tv guide huh, pity they dont have an australian feed...otherwise its a great idea.
i found the broken button to be too distracting with the flashing etc.. so i ended up using the old home.xml. i also found the selected items were not highlighted enough and it makes it a little tuff to see which button your actually pressing so i changed that too as well as a few other minor adjustments.
still a very nice skin though, much better then i could ever do.
i'm not complaining here and i apriciate the feedback alot, that just makes it more fun and makes me wanna find out better ways of doing it...
...i don't really think i have to justify this :) but the look of buttons are designed to look like a 'real' button, hence the small difference between the infocus image and notinfocus image.
i am an interaction designer in profession and education so i'm well aware of weaknesses in clearness in usabillity and if this was a skin for a customer i'd prolly make it totally different. but retro isn't... :) it's for fun.
so thankyou and keep'em coming...

amen :)
updated version of retro uploaded to www.xboxmediaplayer.it/upload (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.it/upload). matching cvs 04-03-09 with compressed textures. please test and see if i missed something. i believe you can login and download using skin/skin (see hifi topic). forum admin please remove login info if inaccurate.
left to do: create retro specific icons for folders, discs and such.
/floink
i can't get in with skin/skin or skins/skins, so no joy for me checking out retro.
it would be cool if all the excellent skins started showing up on allxboxskins.com rather than just in links in the message boards. then they would be easy for everyone to find and checkout.
k i'll post it to axs later tonight. seems the ones who've been able to test it didn't have any comments :)
(i think that skins/skins account has been removed)
total redesign in the worx. will take some time still tho.
