i know nothing about remote controls but it seems to me the majority of remote controls use the same exact tech. in fact i suspect they all use the same chipsets. the only difference is they probably send a manufacture code followed by a device code so that each manufacture has it's own range of codes to play with.

well, is it possible to get the xbox and xbmc to read all the codes from all remotes instead of just codes from the xbox remote? that way we could use keymap.xml to make xbmc work with any remote which would rock!

no. we can only read the 1 protocol that the xbox ir dongle supports. this has 255 codes within it, however, so much fun and games can be had if you wish.

there's a short writeup in the online manual (see my sig)

http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/info_faq.htm#ir q: can i control xboxmediacenter/xbox with a universal infrared remote control (ir-remote)?
a: yes but you still need an xbox ir-receiver/dongle in order for the xbox to recieve the signal,
(program universal remotes for a rca vcr/dvd player, ms ir-dongle uses rca 5 protocol).
