actually the drive does spin down, the problem is that it only stays that way for a couple of seconds before it starts back up. the reason it spins back up is that something is either reading or writing to the hard drive and i don't know what it is. even during video playback you can hear the hard drive either reading or wrting something every 20 seconds or so. video playback when i have spin down disabled works fine (no stuttering or anything like that). does anyone have an idea why my hard drive is being accessed during playback of videos over a lan?

i'm using the 11-15-2004 cvs, streaming over a lan using ccx stream, and playing back wmv9 video. cache settings are at the default.

any help would be appreciated.

edit. added:

i have since tried doubling the video cache and this doesn't help.

i tried setting the debug log level to 7 (none) and this made no difference.

i am launching xmbc from xbmp. i notice that the hard disk is also accessed during xbmp playback. could the problem either be in my bios (4977, slightly older) or from the fact that i'm launching from xbmp?

edit again. adding:

i tried playing something from the dvd drive with the network cable disconnected and it still access the hard drive during playback. i'm thinking it may be the bios, but it's a tsop flashed box and if i don't have to flash it again i'd rather not.

:help:

maybe xbmc is writing to the logfile (errors you won't otice by watching the movie). you can disable the logging in the xboxmediacenter.xml (but don't ask me for the correct settings to do this) :p.

found it. it's a bug. divx spins down fine. wmv9 does not.
