New games that lock up

i am wondering if anybody out there is having trouble playing any new games with the xbox being chiped? i have been trying to play nba 2005 and a few other new releases but my xbox will run them and then i get to were it says press start and it lock's up. any idea?
i am a new xbmc user and am needing as much detail as possible.

are you running it from dvd or from a back-up version on the hard drive?

if the latter, what app did you use to back the disc up to your hd?
