hello,

i was wondering if it would be possible at all to add the set-top box functionality that devices like for example - the linksys mce extender (http://www.engadget.com/entry/0761112677822078/) does - *to xbmc?

which controls a local/remote pc w/mce 2k5.

i know there is a product like this for xbox (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/devices/xboxextenderkit.mspx) in the works.

if it is possible to do, that would be my suggestion.
:)

edit: edited for clarity.

i wonder if the ms extender version will aslo have the cool transitions between screens as mce 2005, or if due to the limitations they will have to cut this down - although by some of the recent comments made on improving the skinning engine - then it may be possible in xbmc too....

(if you havent seen, the menu secreens seem to zoom into eachother..)

anything is possible to reverse-engineer as long as the hardware support it, however this is not realistically feasible because:
1. the microsoft windows media center extender interface/api are closed sources and proprietary (meaning developers must pay for it).
2. dvr-ms (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=46) (microsoft windows media center codec) is also closed sourced and proprietary (meaning developers must to pay for it).
3. dvr-ms containers are protected by a proprietary drm (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=2277) (digital rights management) scheme that microsoft never give us access too.

in conclusion; team-xbmc don't have the resources (time nor skills) to reverse-engineer, hack, crack and decrypt all of those things.

gamester17,

i undertand your point about integrating with ms mce (nor would that be a good idea in ms's eyes) but why not integrate xbmc into mediaportal since the code is available, frodo worked on both projects and this would increase the viability of both products?

everytime i ask this question i get a bs answer. are there interanal fighting between the groups? was frodo's leaving xbmc bad?

this would be awesome since putting a used xbox at each tv would be much less expensive than a computer.

let me know why this seems to not be on the radar when this was one of the original reasons for the xbmc port to the pc.

thanks,
around

no, frodo did not leave under "bad" circomstances, and yes media portal support is planned however it is not a top priority.

it would be great to use mce a pvr in combination with xbmc...

this is an idea that could make it work... i cant work it out myself...

there is program on the internet where you can:

mce webguide features:

allows you to schedule recordings of shows anytime and anywhere from a web browser.
installs quickly and runs with the familiar easy-to-use mce interface.
accesses your own mce pc which means live scheduling without delays.
provides lan-based access to recorded tv shows via networked pc's with playback in windows media player 9.

see this url for more info (http://www.showtell.com/mce_webguide/screenshots.asp)

if someone can port/parse the website to xbmc then you can schedule recordings and watch the electronic program guide.

howto watch..

you cant watch ms-dvr files yet... it is possible to watch wmv.

there is a dvr 2 wmv converter...

dvr2wmv (http://www.thegreenbutton.com/downloads.aspx)

it can run bij command line. sowhy not make a batch that continious converts recordings if there are any... so you can watch it on your xbox.

what about this idea?

???

no, it can't
although, there have been a few threads poping up about it latley

if anything, media portal is good hope for the backend for xbmc. do a search here, and on the xs forums, you will find a good amount of discussion about this.

oh yeah, media portal is not exactly ready for prime time
they should get to at least a 1.0 and get a stable build out there
only then should xbmc be considered

how exactly do i do it with windows media center and it is connected to lanyou don't as there's no such feature/function coded for xbmc. moving to the existing feature suggestion thread for this, please read the thread from beginning to end.

http://tv.msn.com/tv/guide

now you can schedule recordings from the web. it also reports conflicts remotely so you can decide how to resolve.

log in there from your media center pc with a passport id and go through the setup procedures.

it works pretty awesome once it is set up - if you could set up something like this for xbmc that would be incredible.

i know its a long shot, but what are the chances xbmc will be able to control a xp mce pc, acting like an extender. i know obviously the actual extended software is proprietary, but with web based applications like webguide3 in existance, i would assume it would be possible to integrate this functionality.

obviously this would only be fully functional when ms-dvr support is added to mplayer, but even without that as of now, being able to control the mce pc (schedule recording, view guide, etc etc) would be absolutley amazing.

hello,

i own a modded european xbox i (executor) and have an mce 2005 pc. can i use the xbmc to be able to communicate with mce 2005, like the extender? i have an dvd remote for the xbox. i have been using xbmc for some time and then decided to buy mce 2005 with remote control. i would like to put the xbox in my bedroom and be able to watch "recorded tv, etc..." via the lan.

There nothing in Xbmc which will allow it to remote control a Windows Media Center PC. However, you *may* be able to play recordings with Xbmc. (They are in dvr-ms format, but support of that format is a little dodgy.)

I'm an XBMC/XBox noob trying to cobble together a home PVR/viewing solution. Have played a bit with a diy MCE, but don't yet have an XBox. The multi-format XBMC concept sounds great, but I does it have any support for the MCE TV recording component that XBox Extender seems to have ?
Any views appreciated !

I have XBMC 2.0.1 running on a softmodded 1.6 box.. I gotta say it blows me away.. I noticed that it has a MyTV section that can show a guide of upcoming programs. I can view a list of upcoming programs fine (UK listings from Radio Times).. There are scripts for scheduling recordings for several PC systems..

My PC is running Win XP MCE 2005 and it records stuff flawlessly.. Is there any way of scheduling recordings on the PC using XBMC?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I have done a search but havent found anything relevant.

Mediaportal has an xbmc guide and scheduled recordings plugin. It's very stable these days.

You could also buy the Windows Media Center Extender for Xbox off of ebay, rip it do the hard drive and easily change between it and XBMC with this post: http://xbmc.org/forum/showpost.php?p=116770&postcount=41

oh and xluna is right, you're supposed to be able to remotely control a MCE PC with MSN Record service. I don't know if linksboks can handle that page though, probably lots of javascript

Is there anyway to use the Media Centre Extender in XBMC for Linux?

no.. XBMC isn't a server application...

Enabling the UPnP server in settings >> networks is as close as you'll get.

Poked at this a bit ago since I have an MCE machine on my network - near as I could tell the protocol for the Extender stuff hadn't been figured out so adding it to products is a problem. UPnP works although honestly I'm not a huge fan of it - admit I've not tried it with XBMC though.
