View Full Version : Project Mayhem theme burned into my Plasma TV
hey there guys ... just thought i would point out , that the project mahem theme is now burned into my 2 week old sony hd tv. my tv no longer displays blues and adds the color that is used for the bg of project mahem (bluey/green) to everything ... thus that color is burned in. this happened after leaving xbmc running in the background for about 4 hours. the screen saver even kicked on, but to no avail that still screwed it.
well .. i just noticed that you can set it to use matrix trails or a black screen instead of dimming the screen, i would suggest people to use that.
anywho ... thankfully its still under warranty, so they're coming to replace it. ... ugh

are you sure they will fix it under warranty?. i have a sony plasma hdtv myself and i am fairly sure it is not covered. its not repairable anyway, they would have to trash the "tube".
plasma tvs have a fairly serious burn-in problem that is rarely mentioned in reviews. search for burn-in info related to plasma tvs via google and you will see what i mean.
my tv will leave a temporary after-image from just about any permanent image, but they fade shortly after.
i think all games come with a note inside the jacket that warns against using them on plasma tvs (among other types).

no offence meant to all you plasma owners but plasma technology sucks because of this one single very huge problem/issue it has.
(not that i could afford a plasma tv/screen but i would never buy one, go for front or back dlp projectors or lcd/tft tv's instead)
yeah, pretty know issue....dont leave your tv on for too long on the same channel either :)
plasma looks great, price is nice, but man that burn problem sux...

i have a nec plasma and have left (accidentally) the project mayhem screen on for 2-3 hours. the burn in went away almost immediately! i was scared too, maybe nec has licked the burn-in problem!
tip:
to reverse the effects of plasma screen burn-in, connect it to a pc. have the pc running the "scrolling marquee" screen saver with the pure white background and no text (enter a space at the text option). leave it on overnight for moderately burnt images, perhaps 2 days for severe ones. i have used this on hitachi 37's, nec 42's, nec & pioneer 50's, nec 61's, neodigm 84's and dozens of lcd's also.
teldin, sony plasma tvs have the white screen built-in.
however, saying it "reverses" the burn-in is misleading. it minimizes the effects of burn-in by burning in the whole screen. naturally this reduces its service life. perhaps useful in desperate situations.
i did not know that about the sony's, i don't own any. good to know, thanks. as far as reducing the service life, you are correct but if you offset the fact that warranties typically dont cover screen burn-in it's a small trade off having a clear screen vs. playing your fav game behind an xbmc theme. or in my situation, having a client see his logo behind a competing company's burnt-in logo! not good for business, desperate situation indeed!
