Media Database

so how do you guys keep all your stuff organized? my issue has to do with keeping a running tally of all the media stuff i've got and will have in the future. i'd like to have something i can access from xbmc that contains not only what i have on the 'box itself or on my (networked) machine, but also all the dvd backups i've got, plus the dvds that i own. not to mention games that i don't have on the hd, etc. also cds and what not, how do you guys manage this? i'm sure i'm not the only one with an ever expanding library of films and tv and as it is, i've got no one location to keep everything organized and that i can access via xbmc.

i'd be happy to write a script that would access some other database, but i'd like something i can use in the near future. scripting something to access a db is one thing, writing a database for my jive and scripting, etc, is another. anyone have any ideas here??
